1.
What about a BassDoc (of this very forum)/Jim Cairnes 5 string jazz, Fiesta Red (roadworn through gigging since early nineties), very dark rosewood board/figured maple neck, Just fitted with new EMG J actives (totally silent) and schaller hardware. It's an original US fender '62 reissue body with a custom made neck by Jim Cairnes. if you're at all interested PM me an email address and I'll send you some pix. Andy
Veeery interesting... PM sent.
2. I'll tell you what, I don't half fancy a nice Jazz...
3. I love Mr Bungle, have done since school. All of the albums are amazing, but California is a masterpiece, regardless of genre - in my mind the best thing Patton has ever worked on. I was lucky enough to see them live at the much-missed London Astoria, in '99 I think it was. And of course, they have an absolute bass monster in Trevor Dunn - has anyone tried to play Dead Goon?
4.
I doubt that you will be interested but if you like P Bass then I have one of these: http://flatericbassa...ofessional.html 70's Japanese and as the review says not what you expect. Poss part ex plus cash? No idea what the value is and hadn't really thought of selling it but I do like your bass.
Cheers for the offer but no thank you.
5. I had a dream about one of these basses once. When I asked the guy in the shop to get it down for me it was an Aria SB1000, but was a Steinberger when he gave it to me. The sound was beyond anything I had ever imagined and I soon had a crowd of gasping admirers. Caused quite severe GAS for some time, let me tell you.
6. Mine is Heard It Through The Grapevine - played in the CCR style. So much room to play around with the bassline.
7. I played one last year and loved the feel - particularly the neck - but found the whole thing too dark for me. I often wonder about getting one and popping in a couple of those Bisonic reissues...
8. Does anyone else think the vocal mix was a little odd? It sounded like Geddy was going through an 'old-time radio' effect throughout, quite boxy and echoey.
9.
The " 25 Bass Guitars under £500 " review states that the Fender Modern Player Jaguar bass has a scale of 24" ! ( should be 34" ) . Probably a typo . On the same page it gives the scale length of the Freshman FA1BN as 32" . I doubted this and tried to find out online . Even the manufacturer's site doesn't give the scale length ( http://www.freshmang.../product/fa1bn/ ) , so as a last resort I dug mine out and applied the old fashioned tape measure technique ,and..... sure enough it is 32" . I didn't know I had a 32" scale bass , so I learned something thanks to BGM I find the David Etheridge articles to be very helpful .
The same article states the Steinberger Spirit has a maple (I believe) body and neck, then goes on to marvel at how warm the instrument sounds considering it doesn't contain any wood... For all the sloppy errors, BGM is still far more entertaining than Bass Player, which is little more than an advertising pamphlet these days. And they've changes the shape too - I mean, why?!
10. Another fan of Animals here! My favourite Floyd effort. It's strange, as much as I love DSOTM, Meddle, Animals, and The Wall, I cannot stand Wish You Were Here.
11. I generally don't like extreme singlecuts (LP/Tele are ok) but that one really works - bravo!
12. Another bump... Open to offers! It's sitting there unloved, it's really a very sad thing to behold.
13. I'm still struggling to get over Pino in The Who...
14.
Correction: That's not an NS, but a Performer. ;-)
It's not a Performer - it's an NS2000 Q4. Fantastic basses.
15.
Forgive me if I'm being slow witted (though I am both blonde and a bass player, so make the necessary allowances), but I don't quite catch your drift re the Frankenstein thing....?
It looks just like Entwistle's legendary Frankenstein P bass - well it does with the white scratchplate! Apologies for any confusion. I just wish I had a spare £400 knocking about
16.
Funnily enough I was listening to a Rush compilation a mate did for me today and thinking what a great band they are. The mate in question's a folkie and I never quite understood why he's such a massive Rush fan. I found myself liking them to Jethro Tull today (!!!!), so perhaps can start to see the link? Either way, great band, and great bass playing on pretty much every track
Chris, you're learning!
17.
What do you do with them? eBay, or forum sales or charity shop donations? I have loads I doubt I'll ever listen to again, but I'm not sure I can be bothered to list 200 items when it seems an awful lot of CDs on eBay only make 99p! Anyone used services like Music Magpie?
Relatively little effort for nearly £200! I'm loathe to get rid of CDs but if I have to I generally give them to the charity shop. It warms the soul.
18. Ours was a Columbus P bass copy, with flat strings and stupendously high action. I thought it was incredible. I remember the amp too - a 1x15 combo branded 'Cougar', who I have never heard of since. I remember most of the knobs and sliders didn't do much to the sound but I loved feeling the air moving when I turned it up.
