1. I can't upload any more pics for some reason but can email them on if needed.
2. As the pictures will show, it's a sunburst finish with rosewood neck. It's not a pristine example by any means, having proved its worth over many gigs and tours (not to mention a smash hit album!*), but it's in far better condition than I thought and has nothing to affect playability or sound. There are a few minor chips to the body finish, some buckle rash but nothing extreme. There is a fair bit of knocks and dings around the edge of the headstock but again, it all adds character according to Fender these days. As for the neck, there are a few light marks to the varnish but again these aren't noticeable when it's being played - I'm very particular about necks and it never bothered me. There are some wear marks on the upper horn, I've taken a picture but it doesn't look as bad in the flesh. Also, at some point the scratchplate cracked by the jack socket - this was professionally repaired but can still be seen. The thumb rest is long gone sadly. I don't have the original case but will throw in a Thomann tweed-style hardcase. All this, yours for £850. * It was in HMV...
3. Just bought Lozz's Gallien Krueger MB500 amp. Great price and hand delivered by the man himself! Looks after his gear too, it looks brand new. Top man, would recommend 100%.
4.
How old is that picture? I only ask because I thought that Geezer was only using Laklands now. Maybe its a few years old and he really just uses to a Phil Jones Briefcase.
He hasn't played the Vigiers for years. The picture must be at least ten years old. Hate to say it, but he sounded much better with the Vigiers! His tone on Ozzmosis is incredible.
5. I think they are now owned by a larger company... I'm sure there's another thread on here somewhere. I live 5 minutes away from the new shop, and I am ashamed to say I still haven't dropped in.
6.
They're (for me) the best P-basses I've ever played, and I would buy one of these over a USA Std any day of the week.
I'll cheerfully second this.
7. I used one at rehearsal the other day, it was almost ridiculously loud and didn't lose any bottom end as the gain was cranked. However, I didn't like it. As has been mentioned before, it only really has one basic tone, and I just didn't get on with it at all. If I was in a Sleep tribute band it would be perfect though
8.
I'd probably lean toward the Lakland, but personally if I was in the market for a P, I'd probably go for a Fender Classic 50's; best P-bass I've ever played!
This.
9. Love the new track. It's got a real "f*** you, we're Rush!" vibe going on.
10. Love SAHB. Thanks for posting Amos Moses, I've never heard it either!
11. Most Rickenbacker clips on Youtube do sound pretty drab. They are eccentric basses and need to be tamed and understood. If you're looking for that classic Rush/Yes clanky growl we all love (except Beedster ) then amplification has a lot to do with it. The tones are there, but often need to be coaxed out. They're not like a P bass, which still sounds like a P bass no matter what it's plugged into.
12.
I'm waiting for the Ibanez Blazer RI! Truckstop
Ha! I was thinking about this the other day. I bet they would end up charging about a grand for it...
13.
Southern raark isnt my cuppa char i've got to say. But i did record The Who live at the IoW Festival off Sky Arts the other night. Looking forward to watching that.
Now that is an immense performance. Criminally low amount of Entwistle shots though - the My Generation solo is accompanied by footage of him playing from other songs.
14. Black Oak Arkansas - wonderfully hilarious. Atlanta Rhythm Section - unfortunate backdrop. Cher - hot.
15.
There's nothing wrong with the MBEs, you want to take what people on TB say with a pinch of salt, they seem a bit more vulnerable to spouting hearsay, rumour and opinions as fact than most. The MBEs are made to a cheaper price point than the NEOs, that's no surprise. There also has been a few dodgy ones slip through but they're the extreme minority, I wouldn't worry about buying an eastern one if you fancy it. Lots of people swear that cabs without bracing are useless then don't listen to the actual cabs. Try looking them up on here and finding the opinions of people that actually use the MBEs and not just people that have had 2nd/3rd hand information. It might be worth giving Polar Audio a buzz and seeing if you can nip over and try them out. A couple of hours each way on the road isn't a huge price to pay when you're spending hundreds on cabs.
That's very helpful, I know you know your GK stuff. I do try to have the BS detector on whenever I'm on Talkbass, but when there's so many negative opinions being thrown about it's hard not to be a little concerned. That was the other aspect of the MBEs that lots seem to take offence at, the lack of bracing. I'm not even completely celar what this is or is supposed to do but as you are probably aware there are entire threads on TB about modifying an MBE cab to make it sound better. I will have a look into going to Polar Audio. I did intend to get the cabs from Thomann and take full advantage of their 30 day return policy, as I rarely get a true feel for a cab or amp until it's been played at volume in a band setting.
16.
They're very similar, the NEO range is built to a slightly higher quality. Things like bracing and bi-amp compatability are missing from the MBEs to cut costs and make them cheaper cabs.
I've been after a new rig for some time and have pretty much narrowed it down to a GK MB500 - but I can't decide on the cabs. My budget could just stretch to the NEOs, but are they really going to offer me that much over the MBEs? I've done quite a bit of research on here and Talkbass and there seems to be a bit of a bias against the MBE cabs on there, lots of people onsider them badly made and not to sound too great. Of course, with the MB500 head I won't have any use for the bi-amp feature - in fact the horn will probably just stay off anyway.
17.
My 'heroes'..? Joe Morello, for one, Dave Mattocks (see above...), Spencer Dryden (Jefferson Airplane...).
I do love Bonham's playing, but I equally admire Mattocks. One of my favourite drummers and doesn't get anywhere near the atention he deserves. Incidentally there's a clip on Youtube of FC miming on the Whistle Test - Dave obviously takes umbrage to this and lets his feelings clearly be known
18. Isn't the Laney Hardcore a guitar amp?
19.
Tu as un PM monsieur
Je suis... Erm... J'habite a la campagne? I'm sorry, these are sold. Slaps own wrist for not updating thread.
20. Cow and Chicken, end credits: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-cpHUwaj8Xk Probably the most iconic tv theme bassline of all: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pi_aPoaK4Tg&feature=related
21. Don't forget the hidden 'Brit' setting - a wonderful model of an old Marshall Superbass. Why Line 6 don't mention this setting in their advertising is beyond me, it sounds stunning. Bump for a great amp!
22.
It sounds similar to John Entwistle's Alembic sound, although the playing style is very different. It sounds to me like the bass is running in stereo, with a bright and twangy bridge pickup (possibly with a little drive) and a clean bassy neck pickup.
