I would hazard a guess that this is the first time Liberace has been mentioned on BC. -
Which bassline inspired you to pick up the bass?

I've never known anyone to switch endorsements so readily. I remember reading an interview with Glenn a few years back when he said he couldn't play 4 strings anymore as he needed that low B. He was playing a Vigier at the time. Then he switched to a Jazz bass and said it was the only bass that felt right to him. Then came the Manne Glenn Hughes signature bass. Then the Yamahas. Now the Nash Precision copies. My money's on Hofner next.

Now THIS is what a Rick should sound like!

A bit of sniffing around the Rick Resource has unearthed some info on Jon's infamous Great White - here's a list of the mods: 1. Installed a 21st fret. 2. Removed stock bridge pickup and replaced with DeMarzio P's. 3. Installed a "phase" switch for the De- Marzio's' when out of phase the sound is thinner, but cuts thru very well; I imagine Jon used it for lead runs and when playing on the upper frets. I've gotten some good "clank" when out of phase. In phase, the sound is fuller. 4. Stripped factory finish to bare wood and refinished. Can't tell what was used but it has held up well. Some checking and some fading but has not turned the mucous yellow we see on factory white 4001's. And the head stock was done in black. 5. Installed a block of wood, covered in elec- trical tape, under the bridge, which raised the action significantly. (I removed this; couldn't play it with high action). 6. Truss rods showed enough wear to know they were carefully adjusted, but appeared to be originals. The chap who now owns the bass states the mods were made around '79 or '80, and that he considered returning it to it's original state but decided against it.
But apparently not. That bass is known as the "Great White" and I understand that it had a Di Marzio p/u in the bridge position. In interviews, Camp states that his Rick's were heavily modified. A guy on Rickresource currently owns the bass.
It would appear Jon Camp has arrived over on Talkbass, I'll pm him, hopefully he will reply! I'll try to get him over to Basschat as well. I remember reading that interview and him stating that his Ricks were modified. If they had different pickups at the time of the above clips I will be very surprised - it just sounds like a classic, stock Rick to my ears. -
Without checking properly, I seem to remember that Jon Camp's Rick was heavily customised with different pups and other mods.
It may have been at some point but the clips posted here (apart from the Northern Lights clip) are standard Rick tone. The Sight and Sound concert is very clear, it certainly looks like a stock Rick too. -
As I mentioned in my earlier post I'd assumed it was too but then why go to the trouble of always apparently playing it live on a different instrument? there are 2 or 3 youtube clips which I think are from around the time the original was recorded and they are all on a twin neck. Maybe they always played the song live immediately after a song that needed the twin neck and he didn't want to swap basses?
Perhaps he thought the double-neck looked pretty for TV appearances? It's not unheard of for someone to play different basses for recording and live use. His double-neck had twin P pickups if I recall correctly, they would sound very different. If Northern Lights isn't a Rick, I would be very, very surprised. -
What d'you reckon to this bass? Italia Modulo Tipo 1 Bass
Has the quality declined then? That's a shame. I haven't bought a Kinder Egg for years.
You used to get little kits inside the eggs. Often ones that did things when you pulled a lever. Nowadays you tend to get a 'collectable' ornament that does nothing but stand on a shelf. Of course, I haven't bought a Kinder egg for many years but I have a Niece and Nephew who are quite taken with them. They probably cost about £1.50 now. -
Horrible headstock & looks cheap IMO Looks like something you'd get out of a Kinder Egg.
Not these rubbish Kinder eggs you get these days... -
Ric - 50s design, thin pickups, rubbish tone with fingers (OKish with a pic) - Chris Squires - Precision for recording. Bruce Foxton - Precision because Rics impossible to keep in tune - look great/sound crap. Great look, great style - but if you want to play bass then stick with a P/'Ray!!! Every bass player dreams of a Ric - and every bass player goes back to a P after playing one!! Nuf said.
I will refrain from feeding the troll.

I always liked the video with Snow White in it, but that wasn't for the music. -
I would guess Marshalls - at least for 'Burn'. Glenn said he played a Rickenbacker on that album to try to preserve Glover's DP sound - maybe he stuck with the same amps as well. Either way it was a bit of a futile exercise as his tone on 'Burn' isn't a patch on Glover's.

I think the smallest venue I ever played in has to be the Severn Stars in Kidderminster. It's a small place anyway and they cram the bands into a tiny bay window area at the back. The first time we played their, one of the other bands on the tour was a slightly avant-garde instrumental thrash metal band - at one point in a particular song they would all stop playing and freeze for a bit before carrying on. At this particular venue, the drummer (by now slightly inebriated) saw this break as an opportunity to hurl himself out of the window. Cue several slightly worried looks and much nervous laughter. A minute later he ran in through the main entrance, fought through the crowd and straight back to his kit. -extract from 'Classic Tour Stories from Unknown Bands'. In general, being 6ft 3, I find I need to exercise caution with most venues, the headstock of my bass will show you why.
I was going to post a clip of Northern Lights quite early in this thread but then when I looked around for examples it seemed they were all on a twin neck that doesn't look like a ric at all (John Birch or similar maybe?). I'd assumed it was a ric from the studio sound but presumably it wasn't. Great bassline all the same.
The studio version is definitely Rick. My 4003 with the tone cap engaged and everything full on pretty much nails that tone, it's joyous. -
