I didn't mean to start a discussion, but what the hell! My personal favourtie Rick tones are probably those of Roger Glover, Jon Camp,and Geddy Lee circa Signals/ESL. And Mr Squire, of course The song I posted just struck me as a wonderful example of the instrument - those flute-like quality of the high notes and the slightly snarly, snappy low notes. It was just a little different to the norm and also an excuse to post a great song! -
I just bought Mick's Zon Sonus - stunning bass, exactly as described, excellently packed. Regular detailed communication throughout. The only downside to the deal is that I now have to sell something to justify this purchase. I wouldn't hesitate to deal with Mick again, he's a credit to our community.

I think if you are in a band playing such covers, your advertising would probably mention it so I think you would get away with an amusing name. Once you've got a bit of a reputation it won't be a problem. Of course, everything within reason - if you are playing soft rock covers a name like 'Sarcophagus of Entrails' is probably pushing it a bit. -
A pretty rare egg, featuring a wonderful daydream of a bassline, perfectly suiting the song's summery meander. The bass player is Peter Giles, briefly of King Crimson, and on a glorious old Rickenbacker - either an early 4001 or more likely a 1999. Enjoy! DeArmond Starfire bass - found in a junk/pawn shop in York in pristine condition. Sold to help fund a Spector Rebop which I didn't like at all sadly. Status Shark - passive with one shiny chrome pickup in the Aria SB/Rickenbacker position. Incredible clank and growl. Really miss this one, it was perfect for playing along to Fragile! -

Too many to mention, but a few that immediately spring to mind are: Close To The Edge by Yes - Rick Wakeman's glorious 'Seasons of Man' organ solo - not just a thing of wonder in itself but how it enters after the vocal harmony build-up is bordering on perfection. Mustapha by Queen - About a minute or so into the song where suddenly everything just gets 'bigger'. If you know the track you'll get what I mean Oblivion by Mastodon - About halfway through the guitar solo when the key suddenly changes. Totally unexpected and quite breathtaking. And another vote for Genesis, this time for those huge Mellotron 'swoops' in The Fountain of Salmacis. Played at deafening volume by my Dad when I was a kid, it used to send me running from the room in terror.

New video by Sons of Merrick. I actually left the band last year but this track was recorded a couple of years back... So although I am not in the video that's me you can hear on bass. In fact, the first SoM album (which this song is from) is just being re-released in Japan, and the second album, recorded when I was still in the band, should be out over here soon. [/quote] He didn't start playing the Steinberger until during the Signals tour - the compact design was handy when surrounded by his piles of keyboards. It's only appearance on record is on Grace Under Pressure. The Power Windows sessions were started with the Steinberger but after hearing the producer's Wal he re-recorded the bass parts with that. -

Countdown - Rick If you listen carefully the two basses sound very different - The Rick is quite driven and very growly with a lot of mid punch. The Jazz is far cleaner and snappier. A lot of people comment on how the Rick and the Jazz sound almost the same in Geddy's hands, but listening to this record, the differences are clear. A lot of the confusion stems from Moving Pictures, where again both basses were used but they had so much distortion added in production that even Geddy struggles to recall which track is which. I think Geddy's Rick tone on this album is the best tone he ever put on record. -
I once found a pristine DeArmond Starfire bass in a junk shop in York. Wish I still had it. The shop was just outsied the city wall somewhere, not sure exactly where but there is a building opposite with a large painted advert on the side for 'bile beans', whatever the devil they are. That's probably no help to the OP at all, but it just goes to show what you can stumble across if you keep your eyes peeled!
