What's like a 5 string Stingray without being one....??
Cosmo Valdemar replied to thepurpleblob's topic in Bass Guitars
String a 4 as BEAD? Works if you don't mind sacrificing the G from time to time. -
Or the sh*te bridge?
sh*te the bridge may be, but it is faithful to the original RD bass. I'd rather this than a generic Badass or something.

Would it have been so difficult to get the headstock right? They've just cobbled on the one on the current SG bass. I won't mention the pickups. A missed opportunity to properly reissue a classic and sought after instrument.

Yamaha Trb 1005 vs Spector Euro Lx5 vs MusicMan Stingray 5 HH
Cosmo Valdemar replied to ozbilbass's topic in Bass Guitars
depends on music you play. If it's plastic music from the 80's, then treat yourself with spector other than that - go for Yamaha. I owned japan trb, it was very nice bass, extremely well built. spector IS NOT GOOD for metal music!!! and active emg pickups ARE NOT GOOD for other style than Victor Wooten double thumb, as a sound engineer I have to say it - they sound like sh*t when I have to put distorted bass in the mix... And now If I may suggest something: If you want to play heavy music - go for G&L If you want to play pop - Lakland on Bartolini pickups or Stingray (but there is a lot of "deaf" MM stingrays on the market, beware! - I owned 4 of them and only MM Cutlass from 1979 was ok, rest of them made between 1993 to 2009 was deaf ) rock, reggae, pop, jazz and soloing - Jazz Bass (apart from reggae music focus on bridge pickup instead of both) If you have no clue - Precision Bass. IF PBASS IS NOT FITTING IN YOUR BAND, CHANGE YOUR BAND NOT BASS! it's most versatile bass ever made Hope this helps
Comedy is not your forte. -
Oh yes While I remember, the bassist from Supergrass used to use a P type pickup roadster and it sounded ACE!
That was a Blazer. -
Best London venues for pop music?
Cosmo Valdemar replied to Cantdosleepy's topic in General Discussion
Play the grimy rock venues. It'll do you good. -
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=exYpJR4n-Uk&feature=related My 'other' choice. Still Entwistle. Excuse the mildly ridiculous choice of song (it's a Disco piss-take) but it's probably the finest recorded example of his astounding Alembic stereo sound. If the riff ain't enough, jump to the monster solo at 1:22. He even throws in a little 8 string later, just for a laugh.

Nothing much to say really. Fender need to reissue the slab, it would sell millions. I'm finding it amusing how many different versions of 'growl' there seem to be in this thread... And some interesting interpretations of 'aggressive' tone too!

OGWT - Lindisfarne How Good Did That Bass Look Like?
Cosmo Valdemar replied to merello's topic in Bass Guitars
I'd like to have the gent on the right as a pet. -
I remember that video of Wishnevski playing one of his basses in a backyard blues jam with a guitarist. I'd get the video off YouTube if I wasn't using my iPhone. It was hilarious, the playing from both musicians was so ponderous and awful. It was ridiculed on talkbass before they outlawed the criticism of anyone who uses the site.
That video is comedy gold.

Even earlier evidence of Flea with Stingray....
Cosmo Valdemar replied to stingrayPete1977's topic in General Discussion
I wonder why he rarely ( if ever?) uses a Wal or Alembic for live shows?
Of the Alembic, he said he 'wouldn't be caught dead' playing it live. -
Isn't that just an example of some typical slap bass?

Just bought Nick's Ibanez ATK - he even drove over to me as my car is currently broken. Top bloke, wouldn't hesitate to deal with again. Smashing bass too

METAL bassist required, London/South East
Cosmo Valdemar replied to robocorpse's topic in Musicians Wanted
Whereabouts is the band located? Do you have a link to the band website/myspace? -
Line6 Studio 110 is another worth considering for about £200.
I have one of these and it's a marvel. If you look around the for sale forums you should be able to pick one up for under £100. Excellent for recording too, if the need should arise.

Mike Rutherford's early '70's bass sound
Cosmo Valdemar replied to molan's topic in General Discussion
There's a Rick 4001 on the album cover in its stand
My mistake! This must have been before he had the two grafted together. -
Mike Rutherford's early '70's bass sound
Cosmo Valdemar replied to molan's topic in General Discussion
So here I am lounging on the beach in Naxos and discover the beach bar has free wi-fi! I've been having a bit of a '70's live prog fest with Yes and Genesis and have just been listening to the remastered version of Genesis Live for the first time in about 20 years. Mike Rutherford's live sound seems much more aggressive than I remember hearing from the studio albums, especially on the opening track, Watcher of the Skies. It's actually interesting to hear how his tone changes from song to song, with a much mellower sound for the next track and hen somewhere in between the two for the third. At times it's very Chris Squire sounding and I'm pretty sure he was also using a Ricky during this period. I wondered if anyone knew what sort of amp setup he was using in those days? Maybe an overdriven Ampeg?
I am pretty certain it's not an Ampeg. As for the changes in tone, Rutherford would occasionally switch to the guitar part of his double neck, and rely on bass pedals for the low end. In fact, on The Musical Box, he doesn't touch the bass at all. It is a fantastic bass sound, I've always considered the tone on this album as a good example of a 'clean' Rickenbacker - albeit one with very new strings. -
Almost all the bass on Animals is Gilmour too. I believe Waters only plays bass on sheep, except the end.
My favourite Floyd moment, probably. Truly glorious.

Gibson Thunderbird, what are they like?
Cosmo Valdemar replied to deanbean502's topic in Bass Guitars
The old Thunderbirds, with the metal covered pickups and the chrome hardware, are incredible basses - a little awkward to play if you are not used to them but the sound is monstrous. The current Gibsons look similar but are completely different tonally. I have considered buying one and ordering some Mike Lull pickups for it but that's some serious expense! The Epiphone Tbirds have plenty of admirers, I didn't get on with mine at all. Felt like a toy to me. -
Animals was another great album that seems to get overlooked by many. Dave
Animals is my favourite.
Wish You Were Here is one of my 2 favourite albums of all time, and easily my favourite Floyd one. IMO, it's a masterpiece.
It's strange, I love Pink Floyd, but I really don't get on with WYWH. It bores the arse off me.
