The strange and disturbing world of RICK-O-SOUND
Cosmo Valdemar replied to Cosmo Valdemar's topic in General Discussion
I has OBBM make me a stereo to two mono jack cable. id the job with my dual mono basses.
I read on some official Rick propaganda that use of any old stereo cable/y-splitter will result in 'unwanted hum and significant loss of treble' - anyone noticed this? -
Make a stereo cable. It'll still work.
Right, now you've lost me! How would you go about making such a thing? Yes, I'm clueless when it comes to things like this... -
The strange and disturbing world of RICK-O-SOUND

My new Rick will be arriving soon, and I fully intend to go all-out prog and make full use of the stereo output. I know Rickenbacker don't make the separate box required to split the signal anymore, the closest I can find is this: http://www.ricsrus.com/Accessories.html £70 seems a bit much for what is basically a glorified stereo to mono converter, or is there more to it? Is there a cheaper option? -
You can't replicate the sound of an 8 string with an octave. I bought a Pog for exactly that but it sounded shrill and terrible.
I borrowed a friend's Micro Pog when recording our last album, I was so impressed with the sound I would happily use one instead of the 'real thing'. Close enough for rock and roll!

Just got two free tickets to the O2 show! Right at the back though, and with a warning that the seats are not suitable for those afraid of heights... Still, free! -
However, his £30 deposit was trumped buy a large cash payment by the Elbow boys.
That's disgraceful.
I dont really understand why I am lusting after this, Ive had two ricks in the past, but couldnt get on with them. However, in this colour,I think this is got to be one of the most attractive basses around.
My predicament entirely.
the have gone up in price over the last 12months tho and a new one will set you back about 500quid. Trev.
You do get a nice Burns hardcase with them these days though I nearly bought one a few months back, but was dismayed to find the black ones had a white scratchplate and gold hardware - as well as different pickups. I contacted Burns and they said there was a balls up at the Chinese factory and they had been given the pickups from the more expensive Bison 'Shadows' model. They assured me the stock would be back to normal around February but this still doesn't seem to be the case.

If it's one of the recent ones (and if it's the one that's usually on Ebay, it is) that price is lower than when they were first released. Still don't think it's worth that much though, otherwise I would have snapped it up ages ago!
Ride the lightening and Master of Puppets have lots of clean cliff! Just its pretty hard to hear at times. For whom the bell tolls (after the iconic bass distortion intro!) and Orion i think are too best places to hear his clean tones (and yes probably his two most famous distortion sections are in those tracks too!)
Fair point. But if you listen to the isolated tracks on Youtube, the RTL stuff is still pretty distorted. The MoP isolated bass tracks (with the exception of the incredible Orion solo) sound pretty bad IMHO, and make it clear why he's pretty buried on that album. He plays this crazy angular line in the chorus of Master that's all but inaudible in the album mix - even knowing it's there it's hard to pick out. And yes, the quiet section of Orion is clean bass, but that tone could just as well be DI - what I mean is, there's no distinct amp characteristic being heard.
You're probably right, but an all valve amp or valve hybrid is probably going to help more in getting that tone without the need for masses of pedals and effects, which can cost a small fortune in of themselves!
My point was the Cliff tone everyone always goes on about was not so much his amp sound, but his heavily distorted wah sound, which is quite easy to achieve with a couple of pedals. Once you have those the amp doesn't really factor into it. I think th only time you ever really heard Cliff 'clean' was on Kill 'Em all, and that sounds like a very dry DI sound to me. Not trying to bash Cliff in any way here, I love his playing and sound, I just don't think the amp plays too much of a part in recreating that tone.
