First few riffs of NG's HFB song, I thought they were going to burst into a T-Rex song. He does tend to "be influenced by" 70's Glam Rock. Though on saying that he's still far more original than his brothers half arsed attempts. Thought the HFB Bassist was good. Nice to see Aimee Mann on. Dua Lipa was good, though I think the guy playing keyboards & bass should have taken the price tag off the bass he was playing. Very good drummer. Superorganism were dull, arty pap... "catchy, hook-laden pop songs in a groundbreaking choreographed style"? Nope.

To me, there seems to be something inherently wrong about a band who are in their 40's and older, knocking out a version of "Teenage Kicks".

My RickenFaker's, great sound, great feel, and a third of the price of a Rickenbacker.

Mine's a mix'n'match that only exists in dream land... A flamed / nicey figured, mapleglo 4003, but with an Alembic/Warwick style 2 piece stop / tail. I can dream...

If it were me, I'd give Matamp a call. Failing that, HotRox. And I'd go with the JJ's.

FWIW: I think the Stream is far better looking than the Phoenix, looks pretty cool to me. Though a nice Thunderbird would trump it any time.

Is there any really bad new gear out there?
Skybone replied to TheGreek's topic in General Discussion
MacGregor amps Kay Basses Encore Guitars Yup, even today's "dreadful" is a thousand times better than what was about in the 80's. -
ESP's take on a thunderbird was called a phoenix too...
It's been discontinued, redesigned & called "Stream" now.

Best and worst bass gear purchases for 2017?
Skybone replied to Al Krow's topic in General Discussion
Best Purchase: Bass Collection Californian (another Rockinbetter style RickenFaker) Other than new strings, it's been the only purchase this year. -
Try: https://www.guitarbuild.co.uk/ Or http://www.kitbuiltguitars.co.uk/bass-guitar-kits.html There's plenty of kits on eBay, or through Thomann / Gear4Music etc. The Pit Bull kits are supposed to be decent too.

Have you tried a different lead(s)? Different amp? Does the hiss disappear when you touch any of the metal parts (bridge for example)? Could be one of many different things, unfortunately, you have to eliminate each one at a time.

I've been looking into this a lot more recently, as it would appear to be far cheaper to buy a Rickenbacker in the US and have it shipped over, than it would be to actually buy an "officially imported" one in the UK. No UK discounts anywhere, yet there appear to be loads in the US. If they won't export a new bass, then there would appear to be an abundant source of very good quality, second hand models kicking about that don't have manufacturer restrictions on. Pretty sure Rosetti just get the US list price & just change the $ symbol for the £ symbol. The only downside to this, is that I still can't afford one!

2x 16 Ohm loads create an 8 Ohm load. 2x 8 Ohm loads create a 4 Ohm load. Etc. You can't mix 'n' match cab impedance loads, ie, a 16 Ohm cab and a 8 Ohm cab together.

Had a shot on an Octave Mandolin a while back, and have been looking out for a reasonably priced one since (and an excuse for bringing one into the house! ). Ozark do one for about £130 that looks good, very tempted with that one.

It amazes me, when you see videos like this, that people are surprised that girls can play instruments to a high level of skill. "Girl street performer slams like a pro"? What about the other player in the vid, or is it just because a girl can play bass? Sorry, I'm not a fan of slap bass, but I'm not a fan of sexism either.

If, like me, you were a fan of Thrash Metal in the mid-late 80's, then you'll be well aware of Hellhammer & Celtic Frost. I particularly loved the first few albums from Celtic Frost & it was an epic introduction into the darker reaches of metal, but importantly, they avoided all the clichés of the satanic imagery that a lot of the metal bands of the era were reknown for. Martin, for me personally, was something of an inspiration, his playing was tight, and "on the mark" for the intense music that they were producing. Like Geezer Butler, they didn't need a second guitarist with Martins playing filling the gaps. 50 is no age, RIP Martin.

Who plays the Heaviest Bass in the business? Why?
Skybone replied to Grangur's topic in Bass Guitars
I remember my old Westone Thunder 1A being a hefty lump. Great sound, but bloody heavy. -

His work with Prong was great, as well as with KJ.

Actualy watched most of the half hour version of No.4 all the way through, I was more surprised at that than anything else. Wolf Alice were pretty good, Grizzly Bear were shoe gazingly indie, but it was nice to see a Ric being played, Paul Heaton was good & Sza (?) was good (though the bass player wasn't present on stage the song had a great bass line).

Great band with some brilliant songs.

Have you considered looking at something like a Fishman Rare Earth pickup? It can be retro-fitted to any acoustic with a standard round soundhole, and can just plug into an audio interface. I have the Fishman Neo Humbucker, which is the cheap version of the Rare Earth, but it still sounds really rather good. As ever, if you're looking to buy a new acoustic, take yourself off to your nearest merchant of acoustic instruments, and then simply sit & play as many as you can. Pick the one that sounds and plays the best. I did that a few years back, and ended up buying a seriously sweet sounding, all wood, acoustic (no piezo or preamp) by a company I'd never heard of (Naga Guitars). Even today, whenever I pick it up, it sounds as sweet as anything, and anyone who's tried it out really rates it.

Watched the one with Robert Plant & St Vincent the other day... pretty much a waste of time, though Ole Bob was the best thing on the show. However, "Mercury Prize" nominee Nick Mulvey was possibly the dullest thing I've heard in a long time (though I do have to say that the bass player was laying down some really cool lines, but unfortunately, even that valiant effort was completely wasted on the utterly dull songs that the band played). Thank goodness for iPlayer.
