On the other hand, if you buy him an "expensive bass", and it turns out to be a bit of a "flash in the pan", it could be a bit of a waste of money. You could always play the "do well with the cheap one, and we'll look at getting a better one for next birthday/Christmas etc". And let him watch you doing the setup on it, letting him have a shot on it as you go through the process. My first bass was a Kay P style, with an action you could limbo under!

Surely covers are open to interpretation, if it sounds good, what's the problem? There are far too many people who get far too anal about getting the song "right" IMO, and loose something from the band dynamic.

It really depends on what sort of phaser sound you're after... If you're after a "tight" phase, the MXR or Boss are great, but if you're after a "wider spread" psychedelic type phase, then the EHX is the "go to" pedal. There's always the MoogerFooger 12 Step Phaser, Red Witch Moon Phase and loads of other boutiquey pedals to consider.

Got a Korg Pitchclip and a TC Electronic Polytune Clip. The Pitchclip is good, the Polytune Clip is superb. The only issue with the clip style tuner is it staying on the headstock (especially with a 2x2 headstock!).

Having been through a large number of cheap & not-so cheap mass produced pedals, I approached some of the boutique pedals with a bit of trepidation, but was massively and pleasantly surprised. HOWEVER, it really does help if you have invested in your signal path, not only one aspect of it. Good pickups into good pedals into a good amp = a good sound. IMO o'course.

Zoom B3, needs no introduction here. It's just over a year old, and only ever been used at home or at infrequent rehearsals, still with the original box, manuals, USB cable & CD-Rom. The Patch Editor is downloadable from the Zoom website, as are the full specs. £85.00 Zoom FP02M, expression pedal for the B3 (and other Zoom products). I bought this at the same time as the B3, but this has barely been used, other than being lugged about in the same bag as the B3. Comes in the original box with the cable. £20.00 Zoom SCG-5, carry bag originally designed for the Zoom G5, however, I've been using it to carry & store the B3, FP02, PSU & all my guitar leads. Plenty of space left over for a power extension lead & USB cable (front zipped pocket). I suppose everything boils down to the criteria you set yourself when you go out looking for a new bass/guitar/whatever. Not only does it have to meet it's performance requirements (plays well, sounds good etc.), but it also has to meet your aesthetic requirements (as well as budgetary requirements).

Hang on, a Thunder 1A that doesn't have punch or clarity????? Have you put fresh batteries in it recently? Maybe get the pre-amp looked at? I always remember my old Thunder 1A to have been one of the best sounding active basses that I've had, and that list includes a couple of StingRays.

Minor update, had a rehearsal last night, very happy with the sounds I'm getting from the XT, went through the PA instead of using the rehearsal room's old Peavey, sounded really good IMO, though it was a bit of a pain when the guitarists kept turning themselves up... Turn up the PA or the XT? Loving the SVT model, the Sunn Colliseum model sounds excellent too.

There are quite a few fans of the Zoom B3's, I've just gone from a B3 to a Line6 PODxt Live with the Bass Expansion pack.

Fluctuations in the power supply. Had similar issues when my old band used a different room in the rehearsal studio we used at the time, went through everything I could think of, but the noise was still there. The other rooms never had any issues, just this 1 room.

I think that the only "current" bass Multi FX units are made by Zoom.
