Song writing partnerships: myth or reality?
Skybone replied to lemonstar's topic in General Discussion
Like the other replies, in my last band, the guitarist would bring an idea or riff, quite often a full song, we'd jam it out, see what worked where and added what we could. If it sounded good, we would keep on developing until we were all happy, and a finished song would emerge. If someone didn't think the idea had legs, it'd get shelved or adapted/morphed into something else. If someone came up with an idea for a riff or lyric or something, again, it'd get worked on until it became a song or it was decided that it didn't have legs. It's a shame the singer started taking over, especially with the lyrics. But that's another story. -

On board active electrics...going full circle.
Skybone replied to NancyJohnson's topic in Bass Guitars
Went through something similar a while ago. Had a very nice StingRay at the time, but just couldn't find a sound I liked from it, so sold it and bought an SB1000 that came up in the local music emporium (both it and the Ray had been "dream" basses since the 80's), fabulous bass to play, but again, just couldn't find "my" sound out of it no matter what I tried. Went back to said music emporium, and simply sat down and tried a load of basses (thankfully, the shop had an excellent selection of basses), in order to try and find one that not only felt and played well, but sounded great too. After a couple of hours of trying stuff, I walked out with a passive Mexican Jazz (which had US made pickups). It was just head and shoulders above anything else I tried. Only sold it to get my first 4003 (THE dream bass). The only active I've had since then was a G&L L2000 Tribute, again, looked and played great, but just couldn't get a sound I liked from it. Bizarrely, the only active bass that ever "hit the spot" sound wise was an old Thunder 1A. Though currently tempted by the Ibanez BTB that @fleabag has in the marketplace. -

There was also the "Rimini", which was kind of a 4005-a-like bass.

Tech21 Sansamp BDDI Programmable or the Bass Fly rig V2 could be a good start if you need lots of different sounds. The BDDI & VTDI Deluxe have been discontinued, but you may be able to find one second hand on here, or in an online market place of your choosing. Great, because they give you loads of different options. There's always going down the digital modelling route with something like the Line6 PODGo, HX Stomp, Boss GT Core, Headrush, etc.

I had a VTDI Deluxe for a while, wasn't that keen on it after having played about with it for a while. Bought a Bass Fly rig V2 not so long back, which has both the BDDI and VTDI circuits on board, tried the VT first, and couldn't find anything I liked, switched to the BD and there it was. Maybe look at the BDDI instead of the VT.

Yep, toothpick / cocktail stick / matchstick in the hole. Don't necessarily need to use glue, just the tension of new wood will hold it, though some PVA would give you a bit more security.

Some of those Seldon basses look really cool, sort of a modern Grabber vibe.
