Bought an Alesis Nitro Mesh kit for my son a few years ago, he loves it, but like everyone's said, they're still not quiet, especially the kick/bass drum. There's a USB plug on the back, as well as a mini jack socket to plug in an audio source (like a phone) to play along with songs. There was a link to an online drum teaching website Melodics which looked quite good, and had a fair few resources. It was free to sign up, and I think that it had a free membership period for Alesis kit owners, then reverts to a subscription. You'd have to investigate that, as my son didn't show any interest in it, he just wanted to play along to songs on his phone. A good set of headphones is a good idea as well.

As much as I'd love to acquire one, but I think I'll stick with my Ric's for now. 👍

I would have said it'd be easier to find rocking horse doings than an Artist Custom. I can dream.

The Cash

I'd always had a thing for Ric's, but never owned one until after about 25 years of playing, where I'd had P-copies, J-copies, numerous MIJ and MIK basses, even a couple of StingRay's. One of the best sounding basses was a Westone Thunder 1A, and an MIM Jazz. Had the cash and the chance of a 4003, and that was that. Had to sell it, but always hankered after another (though the Rickenfaker was a close second). Managed to pick one up for a good price a few years back, and that really was that. Still GAS-ing for other things, a Thunderbird, Ripper/Grabber, Victory Custom (passive Artist), Dingwall D-Roc, etc. There are/will be others, but the 4003 feels like "home".

The HX FX is exactly that, just effects. AFAIK. Helix Stomp is the full fat Helix engine, just without the buttons and connectivity. Pod Go has nearly all the amp/cab & effect models from the Helix, but there's compromises with the processing power and available blocks. However, if you don't use too many effects, then it's great. Love mine.

My second ever bass was a Westone Raider I, but in the Red/Black paint scheme.

Very similar experience to a few others... was in bands through my teens & twenties (bass of course), then took time out after one band imploded, life got in the way and didn't think about it for a few years. Was still into music & buying CD's, just wasn't that interested in playing. The then local college did adult education courses, and they had a Music Technology course, did that for something to do. Of course, doing music tech, you need something to record, so that started off playing again, then that started off buying guitars & basses, as well as other bits of music tech (4 tracks, DAW's, audio interfaces, drum machines, etc.). In the end, that led onto to playing guitar in a band, which was kind of all consuming because I was writing the songs as well. Had to take a break from that when the kids were born, then we relocated, so that all had to take a back seat. So, again, life got in the way, and didn't think about it for a few years, until something came up and a band opportunity arose. Been through a few line up changes, but the guitarist & I are sticking with it. Currently doing some recording in a local studio.

Kind of like an angular Samurai, the Ibanez Iceman is my "guilty pleasure". Unfortunately, I don't own a bass version, but I do have the short, skinny string versions. Used to own a late 70's version, which was superb, but the reissues are excellent IMO. And yes, very partial to pointy guitars, but I do love a Ric.
