There is something weird going on when you have both volumes on full, I've always found it better to back the neck pickup volume back to about 75%. Definitely both tone knobs wide open though. Then amp / pre-amp EQ to suit (plenty of mid though). I see @Jasper has his mid set around 75% (ish), treble a similar amount & bass around 60%. Sounding quite nice. 👍

Ok, so never filed a nut before. Any tips or guidance? Currently, have a bass 'sat' in E standard on 45-105's, and quite fancy changing it to BEAD tuning. Got a set of 45-135's incoming, so will be sticking those on, but obviously, I'll have to file the nut for them to fit. Assuming it's a case of "easy does it"? Do a bit on either side, then see how the string fits? Any tips or tricks I need to know? Thanks. 👍

As you both say, the clank is part and parcel of "the sound", especially when you dig in. My HW is a single truss rod, so a bit easier to adjust. Yes, making sure that the strings don't choke is important, having a little neck relief is great, but just making sure it's playable is the big thing.

This is so true. I've had tinnitus for nearly 20 years now, good earplugs are an absolute necessity for managing it. Even wearing headphones is enough to set it off, so when I've done recording sessions, I need to wear earplugs, so IEM's are out for me. Always tell my lad and his band-mates to wear them, hopefully they will listen.
