1. I use a Vox Amplug. Means I can walk about the house too.
2. I'm usually quite good. But did turn up to a gig a while back with no lead, both of mine had been "tidied" and where lost in the places where only Miss Big John knows but refuses to believe in. I'd asked both of the others to bring me a lead. Neither did. Which was helpful, nor were either of them carrying a spare... Bananas considering both picked up stuff from the studio en route which has bags and bags of leads... Luckily the support, which we knew nothing of before we showed up, lent me a lead and hung around to the end of our set. Very lucky.
3. I'd be all over this if I hadn't bought a US P a few months ago.
4. I've got a Kalamazoo made (according to some Gibson site or other) Epiphone thing somewhere in my spare room. It's like a strat with jazz pickups and pointy headstock. Was the first bass I really loved. Was the only bass I owned for 10 years or so. Only cost me £70 from a music shop in Stoke, which I later found out to have been flooded. Nice bass, but I snapped the neck with the truss rod trying to straighten the neck 20 years later. Water damage. Neck has been glued and straightened using a jig and submersion in a bath for 48 hours. The frets need crowning though, and a tuner needs replacing... should really do some more with it's refurb... It the only bass of mine with a name. "Harry Dagger" - suits the pointy headstock and is scratched in the body under the scratch plate, by no other than "Harry Dagger" himself, who bought the bass new from Carlsboro (whatever that is now, and / or was) in Hanley and traded it. I found him on the internet and emailed him to ask if it was his bass. It was him who told me of the flooding in the shop he traded it.
5. We've just got a behringer feedback destroyer in the studio. It works a treat - MUCH louder vocals.
6.
Is this the thing set up by Doog Moody up in High Town?
Nah, Luton van, not Luton, Luton. Unless he's gone mobile, in which case it could have been.
7.
I've been to see Big John with his originals band, which was really good.
Ta lar! Bumped into Neckie last night, well, I say bumped into him. I didn't know who he was... He turned up in a luton outside the studio, I thought he'd come to rob us! You'll have to let me know when you're next playing out.
8. I've looked at loads (100s) of Fenders in the flesh and I've never seen one that I've gone "urggh" over the neck / neck pocket. I put a mighty mite neck on a p bass once, and the holes were slightly misaligned - it had been on a p bass elite. It still fitted, but fitted better after the holes were filled and redrilled. And it needed a bit of sanding as the fit was slightly too snug. Other than that, I've never seen any problems. Certainly never seen any problems with any for sale in shops.
9. I've seen RolandRock play in Rebel Rebel, a David Bowie tribute, they're ace. Or they were, he's not in them anymore... oh, but yeah, they're still ace, our drummer still plays for them! Joking aside, they're very good. "David" is much fun. RR is a top player.
10.
I don't know where you've been looking at Mexican P's that are so bad? I've had 2 both bought blind second hand, a 2003 & a 2008 that were both superb, not just for me but the guys I sold them on to were also well impressed. As long as the build quality is good - there's a whole lot of improvement in playability that comes from a proper set up. That applies equally to a £2000 bass though, not a criticism of Fender Mexican Japanese or USA.
Yip. I've bought 2 blind and both are / were superb. One kept for the last 7 years or so, another I liked, modded to mod and back, put back stock and sold onto to a happy buyer. Great bass, wish I'd kept it, but went off the colour. Got to set them up though and I agree that goes for any instrument. I'm not as hung up on try before you buy with Fenders (or any guitars) as some are. You find out about the build quality by looking at it, touching it and setting it up, not playing it in a shop with the wrong strings and an action like a longbow. After a week or so, I'll know if I think it's a good bass or not. So long as there's no glaring finish / fret issues I'll give it a whirl.
11.
I use the mobile version on iPhone/safari and have no trouble getting to last post - just select the circle dot thingy to the left of the thread. Works every time for me- that how I just arrived here
Just tried that. My circle dot thingy takes me to the first post on the first page. Well, actually, I've just tried another thread and it took me to what seems like a random post in the middle of the thread. Maybe the last post I read? Anyway, nothing I click on consistently takes me the last page or last post. Which is quite annoying when threads are longer than a couple of pages. Big thumbs up that I can stay logged in my mobile and on my PC though, which is different on some other forums and a right royal pain in the bum for someone who uses both often.
12. Mark's a top man to do any doings with. Made what could have been a problem sale into a breeze. A fine geezer.
13.
Why da hell is this still here? Super looking bass Rich!
Was thinking that myself.
14. Hmmm... MIMs can be as good a Fender as you can get. I've owned a few MIM Ps and they've all been great. What year / model is it? Also - have you tried other Precisions? MIA. MIJ, Squier er al? Edit : have you tried it though other amps?
15. I nearly bought a gramma pad until I encountered a boomy room and a wooden stage. I managed to sort it all out with the Rane. So that's another option.
16. On my iPhone, both on Safari and Opera, there's no way of going to the last post in the thread. I have to use the full site and then revert back to the mobile site once I've navigated to the last page.
17.
A Trace 1518 cab can do lows very well indeed and all their cabs are very sensitive! The original poster was also using 2 410s in the past and had the same problem! Traces have a lot of power and a very high transient response, they always have, so they can dump a lot of current to produce thick lows, as they are have a multi transistor bipolar output stage and oversized transformers. I would agree that the guitarist needs to eq, but it is not always the case. You can have thick deep guitar, but to cut through as a bass player you need a grindy bass tone, with a lot of mid content. I give ZZtop and Motorhead as one of numerous examples. A lot of bass players in this situation use tube amps, or even tube guitar amps, lemmy, dusty hill. This kind of thing is much easier on a tube amp, just crank the mids, crank the amp, there you go, with all those harmonics and the dynamic compression it cuts through guitars like a knife, and it sounds great in the mix. I think the op in the mean time should try this on his eq push the 100hz up, Push up the mids a bit i.e around 400hz in a curve either side. The so called frown face with a 100hz bump. This is what a SVT does with a 8x10. 100hz bump and roaring mids. Come to think of it why not try a sansamp on svt setting into the poweramp in on the trace. Not as good as real tube, but good enough! Then you will have a versatile setup to cover most situations.
How good or appropriate the TE rig is or should be doesn't really make any difference in the end if the OP can't EQ how he wants and end up being heard. Which I why I said he should EQ differently and / or ask the band to EQ differently. Otherwise there's no option other than changing gear.
18. Yeah - suck em and see.
19. This thread is dead funny. OP, you have a choice. Either EQ differently with your current rig, which is what I'd do. Or get a new rig. As you've said you want a new rig, get one. If you want lows, you need to start off with cabs that do lows. If you want to do lows at high volumes, you need efficient cabs and or lots of power, power to produce these lows. I don't think I've seen one suggestion that's anywhere near. TC and Schroeders are no good at all for this. I'd suggest you look for a powerful power amp, and an efficient and full range cab or two. Use your Trace as a pre-amp until you find a poweramp / cab combo that does it for you. Then get a preamp you like and ditch the Trace. To be honest though, having been through this myself... eventually, what I think you'll end up with is an expensive, very nice amp, which you'll love. It won't be millions of miles away from your TE though. You could just EQ the TE right AND get the others in the band to EQ right, which essentially, would be free. Considering the venues you're playing, that's probably better advice. We'd all spend a lot less money on amps if we learned how to ask guitarists to turn their bass down rather than looking to turn our own volume up.
20. I'm interested in the neck if anyone wants to joint bid? ie, buy it and sell me the neck
21. I have never, ever heard bass pronounced like the fish or the beer in relation to music EVER in the UK. Even the French I know pronounce it "base" in the UK so they don't get laughed at.
22. I'm very confused. "view new content"?
23. I might try another pre-amp in my rig one day, but the SVP is doing the business at the moment. The power-amp and cab are a proper matching pair. Hard to find a nice, light power-amp that does 600W @ 8ohm. Hard to find a cab that really takes advantage of it. Never fails to put a smile on my face.
