1. Former fattest goalscorer in topflight football AND bass player in Supergrass. I never knew that.
2.
MB1. 2.17 and 3.50 on the boys and girls clip sounds strangely like Anne off Little Britain?...
Ha ha ha!
3. Every time I see this thread I think one has come up for sale! Not that I want one... honest ... no. I don't. I'm fine and dandy with my Bigun.
4.
A cover band will play what they think the audience wants to hear. A good cover band will play what the audience wants to hear.
I prefer cover bands that play songs that I want to hear. It's rare. Though hearing an unexpected gem is what going to see a cover band is all about for me. They're usually songs that the audience go "huh? " to. After that I prefer cover bands that play songs they want to play. Don't get me wrong, I respect bands and players that look like they're getting off on playing some of the crap that goes down well with most audiences. But I wouldn't trust them as far as I could throw 'em...
5. I could hear 15kHz fine. 16kHz, nothing. I just turned my speakers full up and I can hear all the way up to 22kHz. Maybe that's line noise on the recording though I can tell the difference between 20 and 21 though. 22 is quiet, but I can hear it.
6. Covers? Nah. Couldn't really give a monkeys about playing anything note for note, unless it's an integral part of the melody or it's counter. Even then, I wouldn't really happy playing a cover unless I felt as a band we were bringing something to it that the original or other covers hadn't. Tribute on the other hand... one has to get somewhere near though with Neil Young / Crazy Horse, we often have to pick versions, even then parts of other versions end up in there, parts (such as the reggae bit in some versions of Cortez the Killer ) are chopped out... then a lot of the songs are to some extent jammed out, which is how it should be played, no two the same, though most would struggle to pick out differences. I'd feel different about being in a tribute to a band with a more regimented sound. Though it's rare to hear live versions of songs of any band which are completely faithful to studio versions isn't it? Even when performed by the same players.
7. This thread inspired me to get my MIM Deluxe out. Wow. I'd forgotten just how good it is. Just such a shame (for me) it's got a modern Jazz neck. Even though it it beautiful. Lovely, lovely figuring. I do wonder if it has a P profile neck on it, if I'd have ever bought the 65 Jazz and the US P. I did put a P neck on it for a bit, I had a MIM P "Upgrade" some time ago and put the neck of that on my Deluxe, put a Mighty Mite maple neck on the upgrade, which I liked so much I hardly played the Deluxe. I keep thinking about putting a fretless neck on it, but it's neck I like, even though I don't like the profile. Very odd!
8. Sorry to hear about this Clarky. You were obviously right into it, so it's a shame. Given your enthusiasm for bass, I'm sure you'll look back at it from the future and be glad you broke off from it.
9.
Not even a 10 on the Richter Scale could wobble this stuff loose!
Aye, I use http://solutions.3m.co.uk/wps/portal/3M/en_GB/Construction/ConstructionMaterials/Solutions/AdhesiveBonding/FasteningSystem/ For my strap ons. And for fastening an SKB X case to a Boschma, or to my cab for wheeling. Two strips about three inches long are enough to hold 10Kg or so upside down if required. Much, much stronger than velcro.
10.
Well back in the 60s and 70 when they were still living there at their parents houses it looked plenty posh to me. Large houses in acres of land with their own tennis courts and swimming pools...
That's quite posh innit. My garden is about 10m by 5m and I have a garage.. My house wasn't built until 1981 though. I've been told one of the SMC's lived in the flat above the HSBC / Everest Tandori, which incidentally, Nick Clegg once used as an office. A few of the taxi drivers remember Clegg. They all say he was a bit racist about his where his office was and has a completely different persona when not being "Nick Clegg MP".
11.
Actually no... apart from a year in Swansea I've lived within 30 miles of Nottingham all my life. And for all their "street-cred" posturing, Stereo MCs are actually posh boys from Ruddington.
Yes, Ruddo. Very posh. Posh end of the poshest (and once largest in Europe) housing estate in Nottingham. Though, in reality, much more posh than some of the "posh" ends. Didn't him in Stereo MC's have something to do with the flat over the Midland / HSBC (which is now gone)?
12. I went to school with Paul Dalglish (Kenny's son), Simon Kendall (Howard's) son and a fella called Bailey. Can't remember his first name, but I keep seeing him on Eggheads / Only Connect / Mastermind etc. Very cool dude. (still) Looks like one of them off the 80's Tefal adverts, I keep searching for him on facebook. Oh, and Ben Kay, who won the Rugby World Cup. I'm sure there's more tenuous claims to fame in this, but I'm struggling... And about 5000 others who are just as brilliantly anonymous as me. the band I was in taught Gomez everything there is to know about being in a band though. Not from our school, but they used to come and watch us. Taught them everything. Even how to stand up etc etc, they came flatpacked.
13. Easily replaceable. However, I do bring a a certain je ne sais quois to proceedings. Perhaps I should shower more often before rehearsals.
14. My MIM deluxe (passive) is a brilliant bass. Easy as good quality as my US Standard. That said, it's a factory special run with US parts. But the neck, jazz spec, is really nice. The fretwork is immaculate, as is the finish and the neck figuring is really quite pretty. Actaully a bit prettier than my US. I don't play it that much as I prefer either a P neck or the deeper neck on my 65RI jazz. But I do play it as it's so good. My three basses are all as good as each other in their different ways. MIA, CIJ and MIM. I bought them all 2nd had but none of them have needed any work other than my setup for relief and intonation etc for strings.
15. My little Ampeg B50R is ok in the house. Sounds nice at low volume. Although I mostly use a Vox Amplug indoors. Means I can wander about too.
16.
Beer goggles John. Garry
Still a bit early for me, but you go ahead!
17. Buying a bass is a bit like making love to a beautiful woman. Only go with the ones you like, for whatever you reason you like them... When you go off them for whatever reason, pass them on.
18. If you like champagne... and amazing views... Tower 42 (the old Natwest building in the City) is a short walk from Liverpool St, or Bank and is worth it. Last time I went the champagne wasn't that expensive either really. You've got to book though.
19. I put a Fender Original in a MIM bass a couple of years ago. Was a lot more responsive and had lot more bite than the stock. Had to reign the high mids and treble in though. Even with flats. I prefer the plain vanilla current stock US. It's got more depth when the treble's rolled off.
20.
I really don't like the styling of Barefaced cabs, they leave me cold.
They look much better in the flesh... And they do sound amazing.
21. That looks beastly. And I mean that in a good way.
22.
Nailing other peoples sh*t is seen as a good night out by some
I'm looking forward to this party. Especially now there's some sh*t nailing to be done. Bit like pin the tail on the donkey?
23. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UmTpFm-D84U&feature=related These vids are all named wrong!
24.
Ye canna change the laws of physics. An 8x10 at 4 ohms will be 8 8 ohm speakers wired up so that there are in effect two sets of four speakers. Each set will be four speakers in parallel and the two sets will be in series (or the equivalent). It would be possible to wire them so you could get one ohm, 4 ohms, or 16 ohms, with each speaker equally loaded. You could wire it up to give you about 9.5 ohms (two sets of three in parallel, one set of two in parallel, all in series) but you'd be loading the speakers a bit unevenly.
Cool. I had no idea they'd be 8 8 Ohms having not ever thought about it before. But it makes sense. I think 16 Ohm would be quite nice. Easy on my amp. Still ponderin'... a ruminatin', comtemplatin' and generally ditherin' and hestitatin' on taking the idea to it's logical conclusionin'
Also let me know if you ever want to sell you B50
Will do mate. Not sure I ever will though. It's the only amp I've been allowed to keep in the living room
