Cover Tunes - putting them together with the band
bigjohn replied to BottomE's topic in General Discussion
We've played loads of covers over the years. But we've never been a cover band. As an original band, we did the odd cover or two of songs that we all just liked, sometimes, but not always because they were well known songs, sometimes they weren't. They always added something to the set though. For me, there's two distinct ways of covering a song. Either as a tribute, which is something we do now, as a Neil Young tribute band (which has evolved from covering NY songs) OR you cover the song in your bands style. In which case, really to do the song justice, you've got to add something to it and put it in a context. I've never got on playing standards or covers though. I always want to rearrange them or change them, or be part of that. But then I do, quite unashamedly play for myself and the band and for enjoyment of playing rather than for what anyone thinks the punters might want to hear. With that in mind, I play covers like they're our own songs. I'm glad there are a LOT of versions of NY songs to play tribute to -

Advice needed fitting a Mighty Mite P Neck
bigjohn replied to Billy Apple's topic in Repairs and Technical
Really? Why? Not looking to be argumentative, just can't see the need.
It's not to glue the screws in, it's just something I do. The glue sets harder than the the wood, so next time you take the screw out and put it back in, you're not biting at the wood, there's a hardened wood glue thread. Takes 5 seconds and is something I do when working with wood and screws, often even if I don't think I'll be taking it apart. -
Advice needed fitting a Mighty Mite P Neck
bigjohn replied to Billy Apple's topic in Repairs and Technical
You should be told off for doing that, but I won't. I put the neck in the pocket and used the screws to mark where the holes should be. Then drilled holes. Then put wood glue on the screws and bolted the neck on. Lovely. -
New Gig, New Rig hit me with smallish goodish amps
bigjohn replied to Dave Vader's topic in Amps and Cabs
Separates can be done easy. Mine (3x1u in a shallow rack) takes 10 seconds to plug in / plug out and it's velcroed to the cab which has wheels! It's a bit of a Dalek though... me no likey stairs. Though have done bus, on my own, with amp and bass, possible though never again. Fine with bass carrying partner. -
I'm enjoying my valve / neo rig. Straddling two golden ages like a colossus But, yeah, Valves will one day be a thing of the past, unless someone works out how to make them without the pollution that causes. Can't really get away from that. And new valves just aren't as good as the old ones. Neodymium is slightly different isn't it? The shortage is partly due to it increased demand for other stuff it's used in isn't it? Lasers and other magnets, mobiles etc. This probably won't be the case forever. Question will be then if it's been alternatively replaced in the speaker production market by the time there's demand enough to use again.

I used to love Tomastiks, but the longer I used them, the more I found the tension (lack of) annoying. I also had a bad habit of snapping A strings - about 4 over 18 months, whilst not snapping the others. Not had the same problems since swapping brands.

Ampeg B50 Rocketbass for me. Lovely tone.

I've bust a string (no spares) at a paid gig once. I'd lost the fear of that happening somewhere along the way - and was one of about 3 gigs I did without a spare set of strings (due to putting the spare set on another bass). I had to play the whole 2nd set with 3 strings. I still don't feel Iike I'd need to take 2 basses though. I agree with Bilbo, it's so unlikely to happen (I bust maybe a string every two years). It's not worth trying to manage that risk other than to take spare strings. And I do take a screw driver. I've fixed all sorts at venues. A jack socket, an instrument cable, changed fuses etc, not all mine, but for me, far more useful than a spare bass. I have had amps die on me though. Twice. Though rather than taking a spare, I just try buy more reliable gear and look after it / get it serviced etc. Taking two basses because I might want to use two is a different matter, I might do that. I never have, but I might. But then I only own one hard case.

How to get a crunchy sound out of a marshall JCM800?
bigjohn replied to phoenix555's topic in Amps and Cabs
From what I remember about mine, the slope knob is where the magic happens. I sold it because I had some rather inefficient speakers and couldn't really get anything out of that would cut through that wasn't all high gain. Not sure I'd describe the tone as "crunch" though, not like Lead Series Crunch. Although I was using a P bass with flats. -
Singing songs all the way through (when you know the lyrics!) should essentially be easier than doing desperate parts. I have some real trouble with some of our songs. I sing BV on the odd line (often first lines of verses) here and there and have to remember where to come in and what's the right line (is this the 3rd or 4th verse after another guitar solo in a 10+ minute song) Cortez the Killer is right bugger for it. Also harder to come in on the right note like that too I find.

Yep. I like em. You can get some decent tones out.

I voted for like only. However, just to throw the cat amongst the pigeons, and probably to the detriment of the "like campaign" for which I've voted, I'd prefer that we had no like/dislike system than we have dislike buttons. In order of preference. 1) Likes only 2) No Like System 3) Like / Dislike.

Why not cut through the headstock veneer with a dremel where the board meets the neck? You could then fill, sand and lacquer that join. For me although it would leave it's mark, I'd think it would be a cleaner repair than attempting to steam off and replace the veneer.

Hadn't broken one for years, then broke one at a gig last year and didn't have any spares. I usually did carry spares and always will. It was an A. I strung the D to A and the G to D. Got through it. Then had a spurt of breaking A strings. All Thomastik Jazz flats. Switched to La Bellas and were all fine now here.
