1.
Good suggestion for an amp, they can be found regularly, cheaply and they are decent! Not sure they can get a MiJ 51 too though. I'd get a squier 51 and change the pickup on it for the budget.
£200 for the amp, £400 left for a bass. Or £150! (budget £350-£600). But yup - same principle. Covers all bases (excuse the pun) Entwistle / McCartney / McVie etc etc, 70s valve tone.
 2.
Also it's not daft to spend more on the amp than the bass, if you have a set budget that's the right thing to do.
Certainly not. Amps are where the money's spent. Although, if you're not gigging... or even playing with a drummer...
 3. There's (or was?) a lovely US made Ampeg B100R in the marketplace which I would snap up if I didn't already have a B50R. £200 - US made, valve preamp, 15" driver, ported. Lovely thing - even loud enough to play with a drummer. I often use the one at a studio we use. They sound great at low volume too. A future classic. Great / flexible EQ and changing the valve in the pre has quite a profound effect the tone. If you're set on a '51, the MIJ ones are the ones I reckon, rather than the Squiers.
 4. Depends on if you're planning to only own one bass amp. You might be better off buying a smaller practice amp, then venturing into buying a larger beast when you start gigging with a band. At least then you'd know you're into it and the outlay wouldn't seem so frivolous. Would also give you some breathing space to pick up a big amp s/h.
 5. Or guitarist gets shocks off his mic only when he's touching his guitar strings. Iffy indeed.
 6. I love Ampeg gear, but steer clear of the non US made stuff. Where is the SVT 7 made?
 7.
But at the moment the cello is sad and lonely in your loft. If you broke it, it would have died doing what it was born to do.
This is true, but alas the cello is not mine, and if I broke it, I'd end up sad and lonely and in the loft...
 8. And more on turning a cello into a bass. We've got one in the loft. Ms bigjohn's, from when she was at school. I've often thunk about doing it but am scaredy cat I'll break it...
 9.
Interesting to apply the word 'boutique' to these cabs.. The Baer is about the only one that is getting there in terms of the pics and then they go and spoil it with the handles and footpads, IMO. I have to say that a few of the home-made BFM projects from guys on here look way better. Of course, no one will be fooled if the cab sounds awful but presentation is an important part as well. If it doesn't matter to you..it might matter to the person you are selling it to.
You might was well have written; "They all look rubbish, so I wouldn't buy one and don't understand anyone that would. IMO. IMV.". Whereas I think they look rather cool and I reckon they all sound better than they look.
 10.
Who...?
Have you never seen Weekend at Bernie's?
 11.
I see you own a GB bass, should probably have just bought a Squier, after all not many bass players know what a GB is do they?
Yep. Bought and sold a few boutique cabs now. Never sold them for less than I bought them for. They've held their value better than some more famous branded gear I've bought and sold. In fact I saw one of my old Acme Low B2 for sale on here for more than I sold it for. Though I did sell them as a pair. Had offers from all over for them too, but let them go for less than I could have sold them for due to the buyer driving 5 hours to pick them up. Similarly the Schroeder I've just sold. People from all over Europe wanted it and offered what I wanted for it. I could have sold it 3 or 4 times in a week. There's enough people that know that these class of cabs in many situations out perform the bigger names, to know that you can easily pass them on if you fancy a change. So back on topic? Has anyone tried one of these wee beasties? I'm also dead interested in the Barefaced 8" developments that Alex has mentioned.
 12.
Call me fussy but I would not buy any of them - I don't know the brand names and I don't muck like the look of them either! If I look at a Bergantino or Aguilar 12' cab they just look a whole lot better - of course the fact that most people on Basschat rave about them also helps shape opinions too!
So... Are Bergantino or Aguilar producing super 1x12 cabs? I really don't understand the fuss about what any of these cabs look like. Last on my list behind how they sound (or how they don't), how well they're built and easy they are to move. What brand they are? couldn't give a monkey's.
 13.
Unfortunately look and brand name has everything to do with what we buy or not and this is not unique to just musical equipment. You can talk all day about how great something is but if you have never heard of it then of course there is always a natural sceptiscm. I have had a Barefaced cab on trial and unfortunately would concur with JTUK that they do look homemade - sorry!
Righto. Have to agree to disagree there. Mine is fine and dandy. The finish and build is functional and there's no problem at all with the workmanship. Quite the opposite. And again... considering the thread is about Super 12s... and what they're all about, what relevance has it? Looks very similar to mine but too small
 14.
I guess you are assuming I'm talking about GS cabs and it is true I do own and use them sometimes but not all the time, for sure. Your video 'evidence' isn't much of a recomendation, I'm afraid, and neither is the styling of your cabs. I am not one for the home made look so when you start to produce decent looking cabs, I'll might well consider that since the cabs look worth a start then maybe the rest of the gubbins/design etc etc maybe, also.
What has what the cabs look like got to do with how they work? Have you seen a Barefaced cab in the flesh? I can assure you, they don't look "home made".
 15. I'd recommend getting a decent power amp and then trying to find a preamp that you like. Preamps would be much cheaper to ship about and they're fun My setup isn't far off an SVT, is 800W and is only about 15 KG all in.
 16. Every time of these comes up I get tempted. I've really no need for one, but they are great.
 17. Aye, I sent a JCM800 to Italy. That was less hassle and less expensive than my recent posting of a Schroeder 1212L to Czech. It took hours and hours to pack that bad boy. Size is more contributory to price than bare weight.
 18. Not that I'm clued up at all about these things, but it looks a bit like a Hagstrom to me. The string retainer, the headstock shape and isn't that a [s]part worn Hagstrom logo? [/s]Forget that - I just looked at the close up.
 19.
I can recommend the Chevins. I regret selling mine to John . The A500 will bridge 700w into 8ohms. It is lush beyond.
[s]If[/s] When I find one I'll let you know.
 20. I can recommend the Chevins. I'm looking for another as a spare...
