1.
Join the club! I have now started to learn to read. Learn where the notes are. Say them when you practise your 'box' scales etc. Then learn different styles and techniques! I learned to play the bass because I need to for some songs in my acoustic duo. It makes the whole thing come to life when you can see in your mind the notes. You can get out of the boxes then! Good Luck
You don't necessarily have to learn to read to do this. Understanding scales and relationships between different notes in different keys doesn't require eyesight. Although again, if I had my time over, I think learning to read would have been quicker and easier to these ends than learning by ear.
 2. Sounds like you'd be best off getting some lessons. I've never bothered, but then I enjoy beating my brains on brick walls so don't copy me
 3.
This Barefaced BigOne will gove you a very big smooth deep sound?
Gotta say I'm looking forward to it!
 4. Just had a large blood blister on my index finger. Two weeks ago last Saturday, longgg... rehearsal, too quiet an amp, not really been playing at the volume that much recently = blister. So much so I had to play the last hour or so with a pick. Went on holiday on the Monday - didn't play bass for two weeks. Blister went down, but the skin was loose and came off. Rehearsed same way exactly two weeks later. No pick required. Played gig on Monday - fingers fine. I say leave them alone.
 5.
Last bump attempt to sell. Ended up getting a parental loan for my other buy this weekend, so l just keep this if it doesnt go this weekend. Used it last night sounded awesome and when me and the singer done a 2 man lift with it he laughed and asked if there was anything inside the box. lol
Hiya, Did you get my PM?

 7.
The thing is that it was a cheapish guitar that was delivered to day, and I'm bit reluctant to send it back, though I was thinking of asking for the price of the repair off the price. I don't mind a bit of fretbuzz, as it rarely comes through the amp, unless I dig in and I want it to, but this is a total no note. I'll get in touch with DV24 and see what they say Thanks for the wisdom again
Ah... Well if it's a new bass... and it's a cheapy - getting it dressed is something you should probably think about anyway.
 8.
The weird thing is, if I bend the string further into the board it clears up. All the other strings are fine on the same fret Would the rest of the frets need dressed too ? There are no guitar techs locally, but how much do think I would be looking at ? I normally setup and maintain my basses myself, but then again, their frets are fine
Sounds like one end of the fret is raised slightly. It might always have been like that, or it might have raised over time. Or the fretboard isn't quite right on particular patch. It's no bother, it'll take someone 5 minutes with the right tools. No need to do the rest if they're all fine. If you look down the edge of the frets from body end, you might see the offender. I do all ny own set ups myself, but let people who have the right tools and do it more often dress frets. It's such an infrequent thing to do, buying the tools makes it a bit uneconomic. That said, I've a mate who does it. And there's a few shops I know around here that do it. If you could get hold of a fret hammer, you might be able to level it with that.
 9.
Apologies for this being about a guitar, rather than one of my basses, but said guitar completely chokes out on the tenth fret of the bottom E string, and nowhere else I've tried raising the bridge, but it didn't change the situation enough to take the hit of a high action. Any Ideas ? Also posted in UKMG
Sounds like you've got a raised fret. If so, no bother, just get it dressed.
 10. Forgot to say I'm in Nottingham and can quite easily get out to the M1 to meet. And I'm happy for people to come around and try out during the day.
 11. I'll get some photos up when I can. It's at our studio at the moment. In really good nick. I bought it almost new (couldn't tell it wasn't new - used about 3-4 times, ungigged) I've used it probably 20 times if that, gigged it about 10/15 times, but always taxi'd about. Bit out of the ordinary as it's orange. It's also the Neo version. Comes with cover. Great cab - but after something different. £400 squids.
 12.
If you can achieve sufficient loudness across th entire room with something smaller than what you have, it's too big.
Biggist.
 13.
Not really, since we are not saying the best test of an amp's wattage is how loud it goes. We are saying the best test of an amp's power is how loud it goes. More appropriately then, your comparable analogy would be 'it's like saying the best test of a car's power is how fast it goes'. Ironically that is as good a real-world test of a car's power as bhp, which is an awful way to test a car's power. Unless it's at the wheel rather than the flywheel. Etc My point is again academic figures versus real world usage. For the end user, 'I want a powerful car' really means 'I want a fast car'. Therefore a car with 180bhp but 0-60 of 6 seconds is preferable to a car with 240bhp and 0-60 of 7.5 seconds. But on paper you would say the 240bhp one is more powerful.
Again, I understand your point. But you're not getting mine If I want a powerful car. It might be because I want it to go fast and be able to pull a trailer. Similarly, I might want an RH450 so could use it as a lightweight 450W power amplifier, with an external pre. In which case, the RH either isn't going to sound as loud as it should, or is going to colour the signal from the pre in order to "sound louder" (depending where in the internal chain TC have put their "pixie dust").
 14.
I think the point was that the best test of the power output of an amp is your ears rather the number printed on the front.
Hmm, but that's silly. To get back to cars, it's like saying the best test of BHP is how fast the car goes.
 15.
It's because we know that this is a storm in a tea cup instigated as part of an opportunistic marketing exercise by a competitor to TC. I have no preference for either of my amps, I use both regularly. They are interchangeable to me in terms of output and as far as my bands are concerned the Staccato is louder, fuller and bassier and they would rather I sold the Thunderfunk! I would have preferred that TC had adopted a different marketing strategy, but I find the whole "issue" amusing. Who here has ever bought an amp based only on its watts rating? You have? Silly boy!
I still don't get it. I couldn't care less if some players find the amp is fit for purpose. I'm sure it is from their point of view. However, it's not going to be from others. What if, for instance, I decided to use a RH450 as a light 450W power amp, using another pre? Would it still be fit for purpose then? To poo poo the idea that the power output rating of an amp is relevant when purchasing is going a bit far as well...
 16.
...with an 800w peak.
Ok. So they've actually designed a <266W RMS amp, which outputs 236W RMS and they've marketed it as a 450W amp with an 800W peak. Nice work. They'd have been more honest calling it an RH800.
 17. I don't get it. They've marketed a 236W amp as 450W, but that's ok cos 236W is enough and it "sounds as loud" as some other 450W amps? It's outrageous. Also seems like most people who are defending TC are those that own one! Strikes me as a bit Emperor's New Clothes.
 18.
Excellent song! Great bass sound too!
Ta very much!
 19.
I've not tried one, but I believe the tuners on this bass model are now much improved on what they were. Not sure when this improvement happened, but my GL Jazz is a 2006 model & the tuners were definitely a weak point back then. I've seen other posts on the internet saying the same thing. I upgraded mine to Hipshot HB2 tuners, which was very simple to do as the screw holes line up perfectly to the originals! Pic attached:- Hipshots sourced from Bass Direct. Thought I'd post in case another GL Jazz owner found useful!
I've had a set of those and they are great tuners. Better than any Fender tuners I've used. They're 20:1 ratio rather than 16:1 for a start. Not that I've ever found Fender tuners to be problematic to honest, but if I was to replace (and I have done out of curiosity!) tuners on a Fender, or when building a bitza, it's these bad boys all day long.
 20.
Only ever happened to me once. So I made sure I was playing my 6 during 'Come Up And See Me' and stole the lead solo off the guitarist. It's never happened since.
Aye. That's the trick. People start playing my lines, I start playing theirs... In fact, I play theirs anyway sometimes. Then laugh at them when they try to play mine with their weedy little strings. Ha ha. HAR HAR HAR
 21. That's a non-export Jap 65 reissue (US pups) through an SVT-IIP ->Power Amp-> Schroeder 1212L. Not sure how much of it is mixed with the DI. TI Jazz flats fingerstyle. Both pups on full, tone rolled right up. [edit] - didn't read the fretless bit.
 22.
Damage to retailers and home-owners should be paid for by Police Authorities under the 1886 act.
I bet that's the kind of compo that requires successful prosecution.
