1. Flats just really are where it's at. Although, having not really rehearsed that much recently, and using a slightly underpowered amp last night... (Ampeg B100R in a small, dead room, with 2 guitars, fender twin, marshall stack & drums)... I used a pick on my LaBella strung Jazz for the second run through of our set. (Got a bit blistery during the first) Very interesting... Very interesting indeed. Never liked picks with TIs. So much I stopped using picks at all.
  2.
It was indeed a joke! I have an aversion to smilies so sometimes it's not always so clear. That's why I included the reference to the Hammer, it's a very old joke based on the same idea. I'm not sure how old my current leads are. I use a couple of coily leads that I've had for something like 10 years I think. They work fine but I am intending to make some new ones with better components soon.
3. If you don't give us the link, none of us will come back.
  4.
Whirlwind from the late 80's. Still used every week.
I too have a 1908's whirlwind. Lovely it is. Not a crackle, despite being used, abused and being my only lead for years.
  5. All depends on why you play, how good you are, and what expectations you have of your playing dunnit. For me, it'd never cross my mind to think that in order to enjoy playing bass, it'd either have to be performance / rehearsal or intense "practice" to the point frustration. I'd think there's loads of fun to be missed out on if that's all I did with it.
  6. From my POV, I often play bass to wind down, or to take my focus off something else. Not sure I'd like it to always be problematic. Sometimes I like easy street. That's why I'm playing, cos it's easy... man.
Had a pair of these circa 1977. Replaced with Acoustic 361 cab. Seemed better at the time.
Were they any good then or not?

Ah. All good info... It looks like parallel to me : Anyways, it could be easily rewired. Anyone got any idea what a fair price would be to offer him? He's got little idea, he inherited it and wants rid as he's got nowhere to useful to store it.
As there are two speakers it's 4 ohms if they're wired in parallel, 16 ohms if serial.
Aye. looks parallel to me. Also it'd be pretty useless as a standalone cab @ 16Ohms. That said, it's been used mainly as a guitar cab in a studio over the last few years...
Check those labels again 2x15" I reckon Ah! chris_b was typing same time as me
Bit of a brain fart there! Yes. 2x15 obviously! It'd need a 100W valve head on it to be any kind of use. It's also quite large!

It's not mine, it's a mate of mine's... I think it's easy to tell it's a 100W (2x50W) 2x10. But what else is a bit difficult as it has no serials, model numbers, it doesn't even have the impedance on it. Anyone got any ideas? I'm quite keen on it, but he's got no idea how much he wants for it.
  12. All good advice. A 450W amp should be plenty for pubs. I use a 600W and often turn it right up, but then, I use a cab with a big mid hump with the mids and treble rolled right off, including using a dual compressor to wipe out a load of low mids. Mostly cos both guitarists in the band hog the bandwidth around there. It works fine apart from when we play places with PA, I get told to turn down on stage and I can't hear what f*cking note I'm playing.
  13. I've got a black 6 string version. If anyone wants it let me know... bump
  14.
I would never let a buyer take the neck off a bass I was selling, neither would I want to do it myself. If the buyer handed over the money, he's welcome to then take the neck off and if it's not what I said it was, I'd let him re-attach the neck and assuming it's back in it's original condition, he'd get his money straight back if he wanted. I would never let someone I don't know do something as major as take the neck off one of my basses, whatever the circumstance. Though by the same token, I would never buy a £500 bass that I didn't know all the information about so there'd never be any need to remove the neck to identify one of my basses.
It's all a bit pointless this discussion isn't it?! I'd understand if I was buying a bass from you that you didn't want me to take the neck off... but if you didn't know what the body was made of and I wanted to know what it was before I bought it... are you seriously telling me that you'd say no to my request? And that you really consider taking the neck off as major? considering the time you'd (and we) would have already spent investigating serial numbers and comparing photographs and getting forums involved trying to ascertain the model and type of wood? I'd tell you to do one
  15.
Really? It's a secondhand bass. Would you know everything about a car you were selling? It's a cheapish, recent, Japanese Fender bass for heaven's sake (nice drink that BTW), it's not worthy of your CSI investigation. Just look at those links I posted and compare the bass, check the serial number online, make sure the neck aand tronics are in good nick, you're done. Hosestly, all this pissing about over a £500 Jap Fender
For me, knowing it's a 5 minute (if that) job to take the neck off and put it back on, it's a bit of a no-brainer. IF the seller didn't want me to, despite me sitting there with a screwdriver and £500 in used notes, I'd probably be thinking twice about it. Similar to buying a second hand car where the seller was disinclined to let me look at the state of the oil, or take it for a drive. Check the photos out here... should help...
  16.
Really? On an MIJ Fender? If I had someone asking me to do that on the MIJ Jazz I sold a couple of months ago I would assume they knew nowt or were a general PITA. If it's a older or vintage USA fender then of course taking the the bass apart is a reasonable request, but not on a £500 Jap.
I'd think it was reasonable if I couldn't tell the buyer what wood the body was made of, or what model it is...
  17.
That's deal over for me, the body/neck could be anything
This is true... If I was still intent on buying regardless, I'd email the serial number to Fender Japan and ask them what it is...
  18. I paid £350+£25pp for one not many weeks ago... Felt like I nipped in and got a steal too...
  19. Interesting... So Ampeg changed the layout to get rid of the hum (that I can't hear) which made it worse! I wonder when the hammerite one came into production... And if it had anything to do with SLM?
  20.
My theory is that the pics on the grass were taken a few years back, before the scratchplate was painted black, and before he'd subjected it to years of pikey abuse, resulting in cracks in the finish and eventual mummification in gaffer tape.
I'm with ya Sherlock.
  21. looks like a crack underneath that gaffa.
