I've got a passive one... They're not quite "mexican standards with an extra pickup", they're deluxe models (the best Baja has to offer - so first pick of the wood to arrive from Corona) and they're made using US hardware, pups and electrics. Same as US deluxes aren't quite Standards either. The necks and bodies are selected as the best from that batch. Mine's really quite indistinguishable from a US bass except for the "made in mexico" stamp. Certainly better (prettier grain etc) than every Standard MIM I've played (I've owned 2). But yeah - £650 is steep. You shuold be able to buy a really nice 2nd hand for £400 or so. £300 or so for one that's been played in Bargains they are.

Here's a little 2 minute tip... If you're going to centre align a website - and some page require scrolling and some don't - you get that weird jump when you go from one page that scrolls to ones that don't. That's because of the scrollbar. Add this to your stylesheet and all pages have a scrollbar - then you don't get the movement... :root {overflow-y: scroll;}
This thread has still got legs i see... I have been thinking about this today and wanted to share our experience. I am doing this because it seems from previous posts that its neccessary to be in one camp on this argument - you are either for cover/tribute bands or against them. There is a 3rd way perhaps... My main current band started as an originals band playing a genre that was never going to get a shed load of gigs locally. We decided to have an alter-ego cover band so that we could earn money to keep the pro players happy and also funnel a percentage back into the originals project. 4 years later we have the original members still playing and have reached (i think) a decent balance. We don't think less of the cover band gigs we do - we still put a lot of effort into them. We still put a lot of effort into writing and recording original material too. Gigs - we do functions, corporate stuff, weddings, nightclubs with the cover band and earn good money without having to travel too far. For the original band we do support slots and a completely different circuit - normally for little or no money and travel a lot further. The cover band has really helped us (IMHO) be a better originals band in many ways and kept everyone interested.
I have similar experiences. Same members, different name, one originals band, one a Neil Young Tribute. We've done covers for a wedding as a one off before, something I'd like to explore more in the future. Gets to a point sometimes where as a band, we need to make some cash. Mostly to cover the costs of playing in our originals band. We don't all have similar jobs or wages, so it's a fair way to make it viable. And it's fun

Deleting posts and provenance of equipment sold on BC
bigjohn replied to Beedster's topic in General Discussion
I can't see any reason why "for sale" threads should be deleted. They're dead useful. Either for provenance of a particular item, or for comparing the value of other items. I do think their should be a rule that for sale threads have a status in the title - FOR SALE/WITHDRAWN/SOLD/SWAPPED FOR MAGIC BEANS etc. That would clear a lot of it up for me. -
Neil is one of my all time favorites, nice one an good job !
Ta. Should be some more coming up over the next few days... Vocals sound crap though... I'm sure we don't sing that bad! maybe we do!

Vocals din't come out too well!

Bah... no Rebel Rebel @ Glastonbudget! Was looking forward to it...

Not really that big a fan of DD (my GF is mad on them, grew up in the same town etc). Although by far what's best about them is the bass parts. I mostly leave the other bits outside for the binmen. The reason the bass parts are different on the studio versions is that they're mostly overdubbed. JT writes like that sometimes... in bits and pieces that he stitches together. After which he has to "learn" play the line.

Doesn't Paypal offer cover? Couldn't you just pay for each others basses? Pay the same amount, the value of each bass (which I assume is the same?).
Your hands are weird mate! I'm also 190mm from wrist to middle fingertip. But my stretch from first to 4th finger is 180mm, 205mm from thumb tip to little fingertip.
Now you've got weird hands! Your "4th finger" usually refers to the ring finger... or the 4th digit. The one most often used for cleaning one's bum. Mine are 210mm wrist to tip, 240mm thumb to pinkie and 140mm index to ring. I like deep necks, I like to feel wood on my palm. etc etc.
-
Not really a bum note for me. It doesn't sound out of key, nor out of time. It's just slightly different from the first verse. That said, it doesn't sound intentional, sounds like he's gone "on the swing" a beat early.
8 gig might not be overkill if you are using sample libs, or sample based Romplers. Another thing to remember is CPU is important. The cheaper/domestic ones do struggle with some heavy duty synth's. Its worth going around the DAW forums, Cakewalk/Sonar is particularly good. Lots of good advice on CPU's, Ram speed [DDR3 1600 etc] AMD.Intel - motherboards etc. It all helps. In the end i went Desktop W7 64 bit AMD Quadcore, 8 gig of Ram, dedicated graphics 1 gig card. All from taking advice from The Sonar forum. My system is very stable. Might be worth leaving SONAR X1 alone until all the updates are out - it seems they have been having big problems. One other thing with 64 bit [If you are going to run a 64 bit DAW] some of the older plugs won't run. But there is a small very cheap programme called J-Bridge, its a must. Bridges 32 bit plugs to 64 bit. Not all work but a big amount do. http://jstuff.wordpress.com/jbridge/ Garry
I'm not sure CPU is that important for DAWs or similar. Video encoding... yes, audio, hmmm, maybe not so much. I'm pretty sure bottlenecks would be caused more by data throughput / cache rather than queues for lots of complex calculations. Something like an i5 would be absolutely fine, maybe even an i3. There's no DAWs on the market that utilise hyperthreading properly is there? Last time I looked about at that, people were being told to turn off hyperthreading in their BIOS to workaround latency issues. If I was buying a laptop specifically for this purpose, the key things for me would be FSB speed, lots of RAM that's capable of running at the FSB speed and a fast data disk. The Lenovo laptop wouldn't do it for me as the FSB is too slow. Might as well have 4GB@1600Mhz than 8GB@1080. Although 8GB might give you the chance to run a RAMDISK. Lenovo's 7200RPM disk is (was?) the excellent Western Digital Scorpio Black disk (Again, last time I looked) the 5200RPM is an Hitachi Travelstar, which is just about ok.
-
I've got a lenovo x61 2Ghz core duo that runs Sonar LE with ease. It's got 4Gb of RAM in it though, and a 320GB WD Caviar Black 7200 RPM disk in it. RAM and disk speed are the bottlenecks - not the CPU. I'd try with as much RAM as you can put in your current laptop (it's v, v cheap at the moment) and maybe with an SSD.
-
Yeah. I'd send it back. If you want to keep it, you'd be doing him a favour for not asking for full repair costs. Was it not insured in transit?
-
A wood glue does it for me. Added bonus is if you want to remove your nuts... It melts with heat, so a soldering iron to the nut, does the job

Watch pocket for me. Along with everything else I might not need to find until the next blue moon I put my fingers in.
Hey Big John - was a pleasure to bump into you last night. The recordings are sounding great - I'll be sure to come and see you when you play the Greyhound (as long as it's not the same day our baby's born! Priorities and all that)
Rebel Rebel was great as ever! I have a bit of a head on me today though. Too much Absolution. We went out with the intention of getting the bus home at 11:30... ended up being the last ones in the bar and leaving at 1:30 Nice Stormtrooper by the way
The gain of a preamp is a function of both the gain that a given valve is capable of and also the actual preamp design. i.e. not every 12AX7 in every preamp will produce a gain of 100, and it may be as little as 30 or 40 or even less, depending. OTOH different valves, even of the same type, sound different, let alone when you start swapping out different designs. I like the sound of 'lower gain' valves (12AT7s particularly) in preamps designed for 12AX7s - the tone can often be sweeter or more detailed, and with more headroom. Since bass doesn't generally rely on preamp overdrive for it's core tone then I'd suggest there's a lot to be gained by trying different valves, including the 5751.
Yeah - agree with the principle. Just think that in the two examples I gave, that there wouldn't be much to gain (if you'll excuse the pun). The JCM needs low gain valves in the preamp - it's unruly enough. The SVT, although not reliant on overdrive for it's core tone, does start to break up if you push it... a feature which could be lost with a lower gain valve. That's not to say I wouldn't like to try some 5751s in my SVT for curiosity. Nor am I saying that with other amps - there wouldn't be a more logical benefit.
-
All depends on yer gear doesn't it really? And how much gain you want / need. If you need less gain that's available from your gear and you're looking to tighten up your tone, or want to emphasise your mids, I'd swap em out and see how it goes. I'm pretty sure (from memory and a quick a google) that JCM800s use ECC83s and they're gain monsters. My SVT-IIP has 2 12AX7s in and hardly distorts even at extremities. So I can't see either of these amps becoming better / more usable with a swap.
