2. Jamerson Trevor Bolder McCartney Entwhistle Jack Bruce Hard to pick 5.
3. I've had a power amp die - 10 minutes into a gig with no backup. And I've snapped an A string with no spares half way through. Both very bad situations to be in!
4. Nice bass. I've got a passive one. Do the US Deluxes have their own pickups then?
5.
It makes songs easier to sing and the strings a little slacker which can aid lead guitarists...
Yup, and also makes guitar strings less likely to snap. Loads and loads of bands do it. Far more do it for live performance than studio work. We do it sometimes. All detune a semitone and play with usual fretting. I quite like it.
6. I use a 1212L - tis a mighty fine beast and an easy one arm lift. With a lightweight head in a rucksack I could walk about with it on one arm and a bass on another. Also makes a fine seat on public transport.
7. I had a Marlin Jazz bass. Bloody awful it was. That went into a, made in someone's garage in Southport, bass head. That someone was called Sperrin. Sounded good, but was flaky. That went into a single 20" PA bass bin. Which was awesome. On the plus side, during this era, I did sometimes use my mates vintage Hiwatt 100 lead head & cab. The Marlin was still crap though.
8. That Mark King track is an earsore on many levels, never mind that it's irrelevant. The vid in the OP is great. Except for the Mariah Carey singing...
9.
Folks, I need a replacement nut for my Fretless Jazz after the previous one split after fitting a new bridge. Anyone know the exact dimensions without me measuring it? Ta, Steve.
Jazz basses are usually 1.5" regardless of where they're made. My MIM is 1.5" The tusq replacement nuts are nice. Less likely to split than the bone ones too.
10. Snapped the A again on my bass last night - mid gig. No spares, no spare bass... Horrible. Luckily was the last song of our 1st set. Had to shift the D string to A, and the G to D and wing the 2nd. Sort of got away with - our drummer found it the most off putting I think! So that's the end of my relations with TIs. They're dumped.
11. Yep. I've got one. Not that bad around here though, just cold, no snow.

My First Gig

£50 quid is better than I get for 90% gigs I do. And I've been playing for 20+ years
13.
An in-betweeny would be D'addario chromes - they do 45-100 and 50-105 gauges (I use the former) and have higher tension than TIs. They are quite bright to begin with (you can even slap them) but calm down after a while and sound typically flatwound https://www.stringsdirect.co.uk/products/12..._ecb81s_ecb81m_
They look interesting too... I'll give the 760FL a go I think... The more I think about the A string on TIs, it's too light for me. It's always the one that ends up snapping.
14.
EBay was where I got mine. I like bass strings like gurders so these suited me. That said I'm happy with my 55-110 gauge Rotosound flats which seems to be my string of choice these days
I've got some black nylon rotos I like. I've not tried their flats, didn't really get on with their rounds when I used to use rounds, which I don't ever any more - not sure my fingers would take it
15.
I've always found the La Bellas I use (760FL) to be very even... Tension-wise, the Jamersons are a big leap from TIs... you might want to consider a less drastic leap first!
The 760FLs look good - massive leap from .70 A string to a .82 Probably exactly what I'm looking for... Is Stringbusters the place to go? (£28.60)
16. I've been using TI Jazz flats for years now... but I'm thinking of maybe moving over to something a bit stiffer and heavier gauge... I've also noticed over the years that I find the E on TIs to be quite a bit more "bassy" than the other others - I have to try to EQ this out - which is easy with my gear, often not so when I end up using others, or there's an unfamiliar engineer involved. I've found this with all 3 of the basses I've used over the time I've used TIs, (P/J, P & J) I've probably gone through about 6 sets of them during that time. I'm pretty sure this a combination of my technique and the strings though. I'm starting to find the A in particular a little weedy... Would anything think the La Bellas would be any different? I'm thinking maybe the Jamerson set... Also - where's the best place to get them?
17. It's different probably because he "can't" play it like the studio version, or "can't be arsed" learning how. I saw a long documentary once on Duran Durun. GF is a very, very big fan... John Taylor often did / does so many overdubs on his basslines he has to learn how to play them before they play live. Some of them he admitted to finding impossible to play if I remember correctly.
18. I reckon you'd have to defret it. Then fret it again after you'd made the narrowings. You'd also have to be careful that the truss could handle the extra tension.
19. I use a Schroeder 1212L with my SVT-IIP and preamp (which wouldn't be too far away from an SVT III) I'd heartily recommend them as a good match esp for country / rock. Plenty of mids, sits great in a live mix and is therefore more easily heard than most cabs, but with a great low/mid kick. They really suit the frequency hump that Ampegs have got. You'd get plenty out of your amp too, I've not used an SVTIII live but I've read they're a bit short on headroom - 1212Ls are very efficient.
20. Jazzes are just that little bit more aggressive. Ggrrrrr!
21.
Spam. The Basschat equivalent of a dog getting into your school.
My dog got into school once. A teacher hit him with umbrella whilst saying "shoo, shoo"... He just gave her one of those doggy grins and ran circles around her in the playground. He was the sort of dog that stole sausages from the butchers and burst strangers footballs for fun. He used pedestrian crossings. A great dog back in days when dogs where dogs and white dog poo filled the pavements.
22.

Fantastic ... Have you ever heard Neil Young's version. And there is a man who covers other peoples music very rarely.
Yeah - I knew Neil Young's first. Ragged Glory is such a great album. He did quite a mean version of A Day in the Life on his most recent tour too.
