Check out the bass clanger on Gene Genie and where Jack Bruce mouths "sorry" to Clapton on the DVD for the Cream reunion gig at the Albert Hall. It sounds like you don't need to worry about your playing, just work on building up your confidence.
I agree. I used to beat myself up everytime for about 5 minutes after each gig... then realised that no-one noticed the bum notes. And people really weren't interested in what mistakes I might have made anyway I've recently heard some audio of some gigs we did a while back and I can't hear my "mistakes" either really. Whatever it was I was playing sounded ok, even if it wasn't exactly what I intended beforehand.
2. I'd be mad on these if they had speakon out and bridged at 4ohm. The later DPCs did, but they're chinese built.
3. If you've got gigs lined up then that's different. You'd need to work around that. But if you've decided to leave and you're not gonna change your mind, ring em up and tell them now. One after the other, so they all know. ring your mate the band leader first, then the others just as courtesy calls if you're not that good mates with them. Sooner the better, they might be making plans right now which involves you being in the band, or they might need to have ideas about your replacement. If someone was to leave my band, I'd want to know as soon as they'd decided. That way you get the most time possible to think of / advertise for someone else to come in.
4.
So what's the problem? The fact that you’re not playing the same line twice or that you screw up? Are you overplaying? James Jamerson improvised or varied the lines on most of his "classics" so that's not a bad thing in itself. There are times when you have to stick to the line and times when you can let rip. Just practise so that you don't make mistakes and don't over play.
Or if you make a mistake... Play it twice
5.
Discipline dude. If your guitarist was doing the same, you wouldn't call it improvising for sure, you'd probably call it f**king up. Sad fact of playing in a band is that for a number of reasons, you sometimes have to stick to the score.
You'd not last 5 minutes playing with my lot! I think if you can get "the feel" as a constant each time you play a song, there's a huge amount of scope to vary your lines. In fact, I find varying my lines is often needed to get the dynamics of the song right. We do a lot of rehearsal though. It bloody needs it
6. I play alt/rock/country originals too. Quite a bit of set basslines with some improvised passages. I go through patches like this... with hindsight I often think it's because I've augmented my style with a new technique or developed a new favourite run or style of run which I keep trying to fit into tracks I already play. Either that or I'm not totally happy with the lines I'm playing and subconsciously I'm searching for something else. If you're going through the same thing You'll come out the other side with lines you're happier with and a better ability to improvise with them. The pitfall to watch out for is making lines more challenging because you can because your technique has improved sufficiently to allow this... That's not always best for the song is it? The short term fix esp. for gigs is just to write some lines and stick to em as best you can!
7. I've got an "Ultimate" stand that looks like this... It's nice - and very collapsible. But 1) it doesn't fit anywhere in my kit so it never taken out (so what's the point of it being collapsible?) and 2) it's a pain for basses (like my P/J) where the jack is on the side... you have to unplug em to stand em up. I'd love an a-frame or similar that fits in the compartment inside a hiscox case. I always end up soundchecking and then putting my bass back in it's case - which isn't really ideal for tuning...
8. Ok. I don't mind keeping the tuners... so I'll take £40 + post for the neck. Although - to be honest, if I was buying, I'd think £80 is a better deal with the tuners included.
9. 99.9999999% of covers are sh!t compared with the original. (fact) just remember that when someone says "do you wanna play 'the chicken song'"? At least when you play an original song there's no one played it any better... yet... :snob: :brow:
10. I've got a 2001 FSR "Gun Metal Blue" Precision for sale at the moment... It's very much like the teal, but a more blue, like a dark Lake Placid.
11.
Trade for MIM Fender Jazz V?
That's sort of interesting...
12.
Whats the big deal with the finish..... Its a thin nitro cellulose finish that is supposed to be thin and also wear quickly to give it the " on the road " look (road =highway in the US) Its a US bass with US parts pretty much the same as the US std but with the thinner nitro finish. They are a very good P bass providing you like the used look. It is not an inferior or cheap finish it was designed that way.
Ok. I perhaps inferior was a bit harsh. Cheaper to manufacture and less hard wearing? They are excellent basses - but like I said, they only differ from MIM upgrades in the finish and the pup. Other than that they're identical except for the decal (and being assembled 20 miles apart from each other). MIM upgrades are excellent basses too. That's what I meant by the "I never really got it" - if I wanted a US P bass, I wouldn't be after a highway one - simply because I don't consider them as models / parts to be any better than a MIM - which are cheaper. Obviously there will be stonkingly good examples - as there are MIM etc, etc...
13. I must admit I'm a little surprised that my Ampeg hasn't sold on here. A B2 combo sold on ebay for £230 the other day and it's a) battered with knobs hanging off, and not as good an amp. There's been quite a bit of interest, but people are worried it's not loud enough, which it is. There's only one drummer I've ever played with where this amp didn't keep up. He's Julian Cope's drummer and he plays a vintage John Bonham Ludwig kit and uses huge brass chinese (as in made in china) cymbals which he busts into oblivion. I had trouble with a 100W all valve Marshall JCM800 bass series not keeping up with him... I've played though it with 3 other drummers in various rooms and venues and it's always been fine. In fact, I'm on the verge of withdrawing it to be honest as I was only selling it to raise funds to buy replacement new power amp for my Schroeder 1212L / SVT-IIP rig. Which is lovely, but I'm not sure I really need it. Esp as the SVT-IIP into the B3158 power amp in is a lovely set up too. It's a bit like a cross between a B15N and an SVT.
14.
well yeah I tried one out last week - it's a used model but had a nice tone - not sure this had a Badass - kinda liked the satin finish - the pups were my main concern, what sort of output tone quality
The pups are US standards I think. From what I can tell from the ones I've looked at a played in shops... The pup and the finish are the things that differentiate them from MIM upgrades. The MIMs have the tougher finish and the HW1s have got US stock pups. The necks feel and look the same. And apart from the HW1s with badass brigdes, the hardware & electrics are exactly the same as the MIM upgrades. I've never really got the appeal of the HW1 really. As far as I can tell, they're US assembled inferior finished MIMs with a stock US pickup in. I think a better bass is a good MIM upgrade with aftermarket pup, changing the pup is a lot easier and less stressful than changing the finish. HW1 p bass parts list MIM p bass upgrade Actually, the necks do have different part numbers - but to be honest, that could just be decal.
