You swine. I've been stalking that for about a week! Nobody bid on it 'till about an hour to go! -
Speakon Cable - is it better or just different from a jack?
bigjohn replied to Cat Burrito's topic in Amps and Cabs
Speakons also make it nigh-on impossible to confuse a speaker lead with a patch lead. My only (minor) gripe is that the bodies snap together & the internal connections are secured by screws - I'd prefer it if they were solder connections.
I sorta like that. I'm far more likely to have a screwdriver at a gig than a soldering iron. And I've had a few gigs where I wished all the connectors / cables where speakons and fixable with a screwdriver. -
dimensions? EDIT : Found them. I know this is really picky, but is there anything you could compare it with to give me a sense of size? Like "knee hight" or the like
Certainly not knee height - I'd say it's more like "bar" height to be honest. Waist high at least, and I'm a big lad. It *just* fits into my polo boot. you have to take out the parcel shelf and lower it in. It fits lying on it's side. Snug. If you look on the photo you can see the 8" speaker in the top right of the grillcloth. - There's a 15" speaker below that. It's over 3 foot tall. So unless you're about 10 foot, it's well over knee height.

Putting a Schaller 3D (3 screws) bridge on a standard 5 hole body?
bigjohn replied to umcoo's topic in Repairs and Technical
Hey folks, thinking of putting a Schaller 3d bridge on my Jazz, where I currently have a standard bridge with the 5 screws. Is this an easy enough task for a luthier worth his salt?
On a sliding scale between very, very easy and very, very hard I'd put it down as very easy. A luthier not worth his salt would no doubt put it on backwards or upside down or on the back or something. -
A couple of questions re Mesa Boogie combo options
bigjohn replied to Beedster's topic in Amps and Cabs
Interesting, thanks John. Have you ever used one (or has anyone else)? Chris
I've not. But the principle sounds good to me... -

Just a thought... Something like this might help? "volume box" At least until you see a scout come up 2nd hand. -

Mighty Mite Precision Neck
bigjohn replied to bigjohn's topic in Accessories & Other Musically Related Items For Sale
The mounting screws intrigue... ...Andy67?
On the heel? before I bought this neck it was fitted to a P Bass Elite. It seems the Elites have slightly different screw positions. The holes were drilled out, hardwood dowling glued in and the holes redrilled. Since then it's fitted fine on two MIM P basses and an MIJ Jazz. -

Fender '51 re-issue - bridge and pick-up query
bigjohn replied to leemarc1970's topic in Accessories and Misc
Big John - might be interested, but I seem to have found the same bridge on the bass parts direct website for about the same money, brand new (?)
Hiya, £38 quid odd isn't £30! Could maybe go a little lower, mine is basically brand new as well, I've never fitted it so the bridge itself is new, I only used the saddles and not for very long really. There's not a mark on them. -
I presume these pick ups are the same in the 57 reissues as well? Whats the volume like from them(assuming they've been used in a bass that is ), reason being i have a mex 50s reissue and although the sound is good, its output is a bit quiet now with roto 77s on, and this set up would make a good replacement i think.
They were fitted in a mexican P bass and the output was bigger than the stock mexi... As always though it's a bit of suck it and see innit. The good thing is it's all wired up so you could see if it made any difference quite easily and put it back stock if you wanted. I would be selling it to be honest, but I've got bills to pay and a new amp to buy.
