The science does make a bit of difference to the end user in terms of choosing a cab in the first place though. After all, how many of us have trialled a cab in gig situation before buying?

Hiya, I'm a righty I'm afraid. Although I've used the amp left handed before and it was fine. I agree about the fairy lights. It would look aWeSomE I'm not going to lie to you and say it sounds massive - it is after all a 100W and 50W biamped set up. BUT - It's physically big which helps with the whole volume displacement and SPL thing - AND it's biamped. Each amp is only sending frequencies for which the speaker is designed (they're ampeg cusotm eminence speakers) to handle - so there's a less of the normal amp / speaker clipping / distortion going on. It just gets louder rather than changing tone as you turn it up. That said - it doesn't keep up with VERY loud drummers. And I did fry it once trying to do so. However, it got repaired by the very knowledgeable and most excellent John Wood of [url="http://www.chambonino.com/"]John Wood Transformers[/url] (John's stuff is that the bottom) who completely rebuilt the power amp section for me using better parts than Ampeg used to build it... so the same thing won't happen again (he's very confident of that - in fact I'm pretty sure he'd allow me to pass on the guarantee to whoever buys it that the same thing won't ever happen again). The power amp transistors are now US made Motorolas. It's been right as rain (in fact righter than rain) since. It does keep up easily with drummers and guitarists that aren't effing stupid. Which our old drummer isn't, but he is stupidly loud. This is him [url="http://www.myspace.com/antronhy"]Antrohny Oh[/url] - possibly one of the loudest drummers on planet Earth... Then again my Marshall JCM800 rig struggled sometimes. This amp has kept up nicely with the two other drummers I've used it with and always sounds great when I've let other bands use it. It is actually the only amp I've had questions about and compliments from from random punters. I've even played gigs with the -15pad switched in and not felt anything awry. If I had enough money to buy Tiny Tim the biggest turkey in the shop I'd keep it. But I've not. And I've also got amps and cabs coming out of me ears at the moment...

I've not used the pod - but I've never found digital preset effects to be any good. I got a "decent" Live at Leeds tone with a DHA overdrive pedal, a Marshall JCM800 bass series a tatty old peavey 2x15 cab and a PJ bass. Pure filth it was. Grrrr.

Like this... That's not it - but I couldn't tell the difference if you paid me. It's in very good nick. It's also built like a tank, so I'm not surprised it's in good nick Although - despite it being quite heavy, it has side handles and tilts back onto built in casters. So apart from thin stairways - it's remarkably mobile. In fact I've taken it to a gig on the bus before It's 150W biamped. A 100W power amp goes into the 15", a 50W goes into the 8". It's got a rotary "balance" knob which controls the crossover. Here's the manual [url="http://www.ampeg.com/manuals/B-3.PDF"]Ampeg b3158[/url]. It's a great amp. It's like a tall SVT classic 15" cab with a built in head! I love it - but I've replaced it really, and the goose is getting fat and I want some of it at Christmas so needs must. It's a bit big to post... So collection is really the only option. I'm in Nottingham but would come and meet on the M1 or A1 maybe. for those of you worried that it wouldn't be loud enough... I wouldn't worry - it's a [b]LOT[/b] louder than the 150w it's labelled with - both because of it's size (Ampeg reckon it has an SPL of 125db ) and that it's biamped helps a great deal. When it was new, it was the loudest ampeg combo ever built. withdrawn. It's worth more than £275!

I have one bass with a name. It's called Harry Dagger. I found it's name scratched under the scratchplate. It's a black / rosewood string-through kalamazoo epiphone jazz bass kinda thing with an explorer headstock. It suits it's name.

I used to use a Marshall JCM800 100W head to power 2 of them. But that's valves for ya. And the Marshall's tone cut through. What's unique about these cabs is the high bandwidth. If you put 300W of midrange into them - they'll sound LOUD. If you put 300W of really low frequency into em - you'll hardly hear it. You'll feel it. As will your window frames, but you won't hear it... -

Usually nuts are just glued in with wood glue. At least mine are The last one I removed I attacked with a cool soldering iron, being mindful of the wood. Then pulled it out with some pliers. It sounds painful, but really, it works... Putting a new nut in is easy but be careful when you sand it flush with the neck. Filing it correctly for the strings is just a matter of of getting some files of the right size for your strings. If you want the strings to align the same as on the current nut, it might be worth taking some measurements of the current one with some card and a pencil. Good luck.

I think I pretty much do this anyway. I also sometimes fret my pinky finger with my 3rd finger on top. I think it's a legacy from having learned on a poorly set up bass with a really high action and high tension strings. (for about 15 years) And I've got big hands so sometimes although I fret with my pinky there's no real need and the 3rd finger goes to help

Hire a room and charge on the door? That would certainly work out if you've got enough mates to cover the charge. Are there any regularly gigging bands you like locally? you could ask them if you could support them. Otherwise, you've got to do the do and bang doors down. Make a nuisance of yourself. Good on you for wanting to get paid. Are you in a covers band? We sometimes get paid for playing originals, but more often than not it's a few beers and the pleasure of playing in front of 30-40 people, 10 of whom wouldn't be there if you weren't playing! And we tend to get offered these gigs rather than go looking for them - so if you want to get paid each time - you'll have to put a LOT of effort into finding gigs and probably be willing to travel. Even then - being paid usually just about covers expenses. If you're playing covers, it will be slightly easier as it opens up more places to play.

They're mad, bad b*stards. (or quite chilled out dinner guests... that's their beauty) I've got an email from Acme somewhere saying "yes, we rate them @350w but that's more of a minimum rather than a maximum" I might be able to put you in touch a 750w per channel C-audio power amp if you want Ben. I've had a tip off from someone who thought I still had these cabs and has just serviced it. Good amp for it he reckons - switchable power supply and all that (which is what you need really for driving these things) Might be cheapish I dunno. I have a mobile number. PM me if you want it. -

C[/quote] I think I've broken 3 TI flat A strings. I've never broken an E, D or G. They've all broken at the saddle. One of them broke only after about 4 months - but a lot of taking the neck on and off doing some work on the heel. One of them broke on a string through body - after about a week. I read somewhere that they're not suitable at all for string throughs.

If the frets are so dirty that this is gonna be an issue, it might be an idea to remove the neck whilst you clean it anyway.
