Great stuff. I know the Beddy very well. I used to live within 10 minutes walk. Great pub / club. Never been else quite like it!
I priced one a while back. The least money I could do it for and still achieve a workable commercial product with it is somewhere in the region of four grand, and that's not including any of the building costs. Other specs for budget setups went up to twenty grand. Okay, you could feasibly get a multitrack setup for under a grand, but you've have to have really pro skills to get something good out of it.
I can imagine. In terms of getting a new label's "ball rolling", having engineer(s) and / or producer(s) on hand with really pro skills would be a necessity though, rather than high spec equipment. Although I suspect one wouldn't really come without the other.
How long is a piece of string? It depends on what you want to achieve. "Many thousands" is I reckon a minimum start-up cost, unless you're planning to start a so-called bedroom label and only handle production and distribution, in which case a few hundred, a telephone, a good internet connection and a lot of time is sufficient to begin with. But the minute you want to start paying to record bands, you're looking at big costs for studio time.
Unless you'd built a recording studio. I think it could work, but you'd need the right team of people / mix of skills. Marketing / Promo / Recording / Contacts. You'd need all of them to be really good at what they do and be willing to work for little money in a risk / reward sort of scenario. And then you'd need some good bands.

I used to work with someone who drove a white Lotus Esprit which belonged to a member of Kagagoogoo. Now there's a tenuous claim to fame.

Marshall JCM 800 Bass Series 100W Valve Head

Anyone who doesn't like marshall bass amps should try a JCM800 bass series. They're great. Tight, punchy, loud and deep. The slope control is genius.
The strings that come on Rickenbackers feel like rubber bands to me but they're something silly like 45,55,75,95
Any idea what they are? I love TI flats. One of the reasons I love em is that they feel like rubber bands. I will say one thing about TI's though. I know they're labelled as "low tension" - but I've bust a neck on a bass with them on because they caused more bow than roundwounds did. They certainly feel low tension though - but I think that's to do with them being more flexible than some flats and low tension compared with them.
Is it loud for a 100 watter? Keep up with guitar and drums unmiced in small-medium gigs? (noOb!)
She's plenty loud. I've got some really quite insensitive cabs and I've never had a problem being heard. Here's what Marshall's website says : These two amplifiers have undergone a major re-design programme to keep abreast of the requirements of modern bass playing trends. The amplifiers feature two mixable inputs with volume control, active treble and bass controls and a middle circuitry sweepable from 400 HZ to 1 KHZ, plus a slope control that filters the low fundamental notes for that tight punchy sound when playing loud. All this, plus an improvement of bass in the power amp, leads Marshall to believe that the 1992 is the finest 100 watt bass amplifier that they have ever produced. -
I do indeed, and I LOVE it! They're incredibly well made. Light and tough, and the design is very ergonomic. The added bulk (which isn't really that much in the grand scheme of things) gives them more protection, and the design means it's extremely stable when stood on its side or end. The wide handle is moulded in as part of the 'chassis', rather than a strap. This means it's as indestructible as the case, and because it's wide it's much more comfortable to carry long distances. As for the looks.. they're polarising, but I think they look really funky - much better than the generic 'rack case'r'us' design. That's obviously IMHO, though. In short.. I think they're a design classic. I'll never buy another rack case.
Well... a glowing endorsement if there ever was one! Have they got a handle on both sides?

She's a beast. I just fancy a change... I'll get some more photos if there's interest. It's not in perfect aesthetic condition but it's in better nick than this one that's just gone for £575 BIN on ebay. Unlike that one, this one is in perfect working order and bar a couple of the knobs - all original down to the faded cloth. I'm looking for £450.
Thanks for the info i didn't realise they were available in passive as well or that the pick ups were US! This one has the rosewood board on it but is listed as active i think it is an 08 model as the owner says in the ad he bought it new last year. Might try to escape from work this weekend and nip over and see it!
Nice. Aye. US pickups and 'lectrics.
I don't mind the jazz neck my current bass has a jazz neck though i did really like the precision neck on my mates P bass which surprised me as my hands aren't the biggest so i'd always avoided P basses. The Mex deluxe is active which i'm not too sure about i've never had an active bass before! Was the deluxe also available as a passive?
Aye, I've got a passive one. If it's an active one, it will probably have a maple board on it. Both the passive and the active have US pickups, the active has the samarium cobolt noiseless ones. - That's maybe something to consider. I swapped the neck on mine to a p bass one. But then I've got big grubby hands and don't really like standard jazz necks. Although, it's a nice neck to look at. Lovely figuring and really well finished. -

The deluxe will have a jazz profile neck. Is it active or passive?. -
I've got a DHA VT1 bass overdrive that I might be willing to part with. It's basically a valve, and a gain knob, input / output levels and true bypass. Simple but very effective!

Ha Ha, glad to see some others have shared some Marlin misery. I too had a Sidewinder, it was a Jazz one though. Huge body, huge neck fat neck, Terrible high action. Bloody awful bass it was (is?) - I gave it to a mate of mine. I still feel guilty about giving it away.

Dunlops or Grolsch rubber rings for me. The strap button screws have always been the weak point for me. I had a Gibson one shear once whilst playing. Dunlop even give you a nice big fat replacement screw.
Yeah, this is kind of how I feel about it. It also comes with a Fender gigbag. £350 seems too low for a bass thats mint condition, only played at home complete with a fill setup. Might as well keep it for that price.
You know I'm interested! And this isn't a blunt attempt at a haggle... honest. They're in stock at Reidy's for £520 And at nevada for £510 I have seen them go on ebay for £350 - £400, the one I saw go for £400 had a Bad Ass II fitted. Was a few months ago though now and I can't find the item.
I think this is the first strings thread I've seen where 90% of the replies didn't say TI Jazz Flats.
TI Jazz Flats. Hand rolled between the thighs of Austrian virgins.

There's a passive MIM Deluxe special. They aren't as common as the active ones though. Aren't the MIA California Series P/Js passive? I thought so.
