This is a point I raised in the current sx thread going on. Im now convinced it doesnt really matter where your bass is made or what it says on the headstock, there are some models of some cheap basses that play great and more expensive basses that play like sh*te
I certainly agree to an extent. I've said for ages Fenders are Fenders. If you taped over the "Made in " and homogenised the hardware, 99% of people would be unable to tell MIMs from MIAs.

That is quite a surprise. I knew they were good - but not that good. Is it Korean? I've heard those Lite Ash guitars (esp. telecasters) are supposed to be excellent as well.
-
Is everything screwed together properly? Does the ringing occur on every string, on every note?

There are some knocking about - I've seen some standard MIMs with maple boards on ebay. I was thinking about one myself for a while. Also all of the active P Special Deluxe models I've seen have had maple boards. Currently they don't make em in Mexico though - remember Fender mexico use the same neck supplies as Fender US - and they don't even make Highway Ones with maple boards. You're right - Jap maples are far more common - but they're from different wood stocks.

Good lad. 30 songs in 3 weeks is some going. Depends how "perfect" you want em to be though. I could take 6 months learning to play those 30 songs exactly the way I wanted. Although I could probably wing it by running through em a few times on the stereo 3 weeks is plenty of time to get somewhere in the middle! I find learning one at time, then putting them together one after the other is a good one. Have they given you a set list rather than a list of songs to know and learn?
oooh... thats nice. am i the only one thinking that'd look even better with a black pickguard?
I'd put one on two. And I'd have put chrome stack knobs on it. Each to their own innit. Beautiful bass though. Lovely neck. I want one.
As a rule, I don't like the look/shape of Fenders generally, but that matt black beastie really cooks my noodle! It's gorgeous! Isn't the finish a bggr to keep clean though?
Only if you cook your noodle too close In reality... surprisingly not... in fact it's easier than lacquer as it doesn't show my paw marks! It's also a bit more hard wearing in a way too - small dings and scratches disappear with a bit of fairy liquid. Thanks - yes, she's a beauty aright. What usually does it for you then?
my Brian Moore, (which is very rare), as that plugs into the back of the guitar, which is a very bad design cause it has fallen out of there before because I did not have it around the strap because it plugs in the back!!!!! Great idea, stupid design. Sorry Brian
He only did it cos everyone was watching the Cup Final on BBC anyway. It was revenge I tells ya. Revenge.
I always do it, after learning the embarassing way, I also take the other end of the lead around/through the side handle on my combo.
Yeah - funny, I often forget to plug my bass in through the strap - but never forget to tug a loop through the handle of my amp. Weird as I've only lost lead out of the jack of of bass before, and not out of the amp. Luckily - only ever happened at home, or at rehearsal (he types with crossed fingers!~######0-_)

Without going to far into it I don't see how transposing from F sharp to D could mean the relative pitch of the notes change. F sharp > B > E The same run played in D would be D > G > C
2nd option, obviously.
Is correct
AND £650 FOR A MEX FENDER???? ARE THEY HAVING A FOOKIN LARF!! IT'D HAVE TO BE A GOLD PLATED HARDCASE FOR THAT PRICE LMAO
Not that I paid it (bought it second hand from ebay) but mine cost £799 new - it came with the price tag. And no hard case. Although it's not a standard. I had a "funny" experience on Denmark street last spring whilst shopping for a Precision. I was looking around the shop when my vicinity was invaded by a 13 year old boy, coupled with father, aka Wallet. Attending Wallet was a salesman. "He wants a Precision bass." says Wallet. "That's a co-incidence.", I interject. "Do you have any decent ones?". I am ignored. Salesman gets bass down and hands it to kid. Who's quite enamoured. It's a £700 bass that he can't play yet. He gives it a pluck or two and hands it back to salesman, who puts it back on the rack and hangs around oblivious to the fact he's right in my way so I can't really get out of the cubby hole I've found myself squeezed into with teenager and fat Wallet. Salesman starts fiddling with price labels, including the one he's just put back on the rack. After standing around looking at basses I don't want for 2-3 minutes I get a little impatient and decide to leave. I say "Excuse me," to get past, which despite me being 15 stone and 6'4"gets a look of "where the f*** did you come from?". "By the way mate, that's a Jazz bass." is my final remark as I leave. Teenager and Wallet look confused.

Anyone heard of a bass player called Nigel Clutterbuck?
bigjohn replied to Thunderthumbs's topic in General Discussion
Clutterbuck by name, Clutterbuck by nature. -
Thanks John The ebay links at the bottom of the first post should answer both questions!
Ah yes - I recognise that bird! The body looks great. Nice neck too

Hi Mewsie, Seconding the Funk, it depends on what sort of music you're doing, and what your drummer is going to be like. A loud amp / cab thing is a bit excessive for me at home although essential for me when I play out . Much prefer a nice combo when in the comfort and privacy. It keeps the windows frames in place. The downside is my front room doesn't look like a guitar shop There are some lovely sounding, if not quite so loud combos out there for your budget.

The love of my life My MIM (yes, MIM) FSR P Bass Special in Matt Black. Still got her. Still love her. The best Fender I've played.
-
Classy. 2 questions : 1) Where did you get the neck from? 2) How did you cut the body? Nice one. John

How are the Wizards compared with Fender US standard pickups - or Fender Originals?
-
It's sounds to me like the action is set too low. What sort of bass is it?
My MIM Precision, as I've repeated endlessly elswhere, was by far the best Precision I've ever played, admitedly modded to the hilt, like yours, but marvelous none the less.
Not played yours - but mine's a beauty too. Not even modded (although it is an FSR) - it came with US standard pickups, reissue bridge (the one with the grooves) even the tuners are fine (esp after being taken to pieces and soaked in wd40... The neck is fabulous.
5 pints and a shot of tequilla should sort it
Yeah - and about 5 more... And knowing you'll feel great when it's over. And that the 1st is the hardest. Downside of the 1st is the hardest is that 1st is also about the biggest relief I've only done 6-7 or so with my current band - and about 4-5 with a band 15 years ago. Both the other 2 in band have literally 100s if not 1000s. They get jealous
I've heard that SO many times from fools who were incapable of using their ears and hearing that my beloved Acmes could go lower than any 15" on the market. Maybe the lack of mud confused them?
They're my beloved Acmes now They are uncanny. How's your build coming on Alex?
-
You know, I'm really not sure that Acme cabs will get on very well with a valve head. Just a feeling from my experiences of valve amps with cabs that rely heavily on their porting for low end, they all just farted out really quick. That said, the extra excursion on the acme drivers would probably ease that somewhat. Just a hunch really (I used to have a B2).
I run a Marshall jcm800 bass series 100W all valve head into 2 Acme Low B2 (2x10)s wired in series. The Acmes are fine with valves. It's a much bigger sound with 2 cabs rather than one though. It's not monstrous (it's only 100W) but it's really quite loud (and fat). The Acmes are certainly louder than a Marshall 4x12 I've used. What is really noticeable when you compare Acmes to other cabs - is the lack of distortion. I run my Marshall at 100% - I can't do that with other cabs without losing tone and clarity. A 435W all valve head though an Acme cab would be REALLY loud. You could do with wearing a hard-hat.
Thanks bigjohn, tell me something I don't already know, however there are a significant number of relatively famous and what one would call successful left handed musicians, therefore one would expect in the near future a less discriminatory attitude. One can only hope.
Positive discrimination for lefties? Good god Where will it end???
-
This is a debate that will go on forever, whilst there is still not a vast choice out there its better than it used to be, but it does p**s me right off
It's not like anyone is trying to rip lefties off - it's just they make less, sell less, and so there's less economy of scale more risk involved in production deriving a higher price. It might piss you off, but until 50% of the population become left handed - it's tough sh*t.

I've only owned 3 basses in 18 years. I still own two of em. The other one - a Marlin jazz bass copy (which was a dog) I gave to my mate about 14 years ago. Not sure if he's still got it or not.
