1. It's all in the fingers...and thumb, of course. The definitive slap players for me are: Larry Graham Kim Annette Clarke (Defunkt) Stanley Clarke Robert 'Pops' Popwell (early Crusaders) Louis Johnson Marcus Miller Victor Wooten Les Claypool Meshell Mark King Vail Johnson Flea Robert Trujillo Alain Caron
2.
Well, more to the point there were other more palatable slap sounds - Larry Graham, Louis Johnson, Norwood Fisher, etc. Less of the ear-splitting treble content that Marcus likes to injure his listeners with.
Sorry mate, have to disagree. Marcus has the best slap sound on the planet. No ear-splitting treble there...but saying that, my treble hearing has gone.
3.
I can't think of a single hit record from the last ten years that has a slap bass part. So "nobody".
Fair point.
4.
If you like that '80s sound.
Who would you say has the 'Noughties' sound?
5. I suspect you're after Marcus's sound - the benchmark of an awesome slap tone?
6. This might help: http://www.911tabs.com/link/?4349421 Learn the root changes first, then put in the bits between the changes. Sounds like standard disco fodder to me.
7. Years ago I was looking for a s/h Stingray 5 but couldn't find one. I decided to get a Warwick FNA Jazzman 5 instead. Big mistake. I hated the feel, and the sound wasn't anything like the Stingray. I eventually found a lovely Stingray 5, but in a fit of mid-life crisis decided to sell it and get a Bongo 5. Huge mistake. Bongos do not sound like Stingrays. IMO, I would go for a 3-band Stingray (and that's being really honest, as I have a 2-band for sale!)

11. Due to some crazy prices on Stingray basses at the moment, I will accept £720 delivered by carrier or £700 collected.
12. Can someone video you playing? Would help immensely.
13. Sounds like: i) Action is too low. ii) You're plucking quite close to the neck. iii) You're hitting the pickup. Try lowering them.
14. Nearly Dan play the Rescue Rooms (Rock City Basement) on Sunday 28 March. www.rescuerooms.com
15. A Sunday bump. Any Coldplay guitarists out there?
16. Makes me so glad I bought my Jazz.
17. That Raw Stylus album is a classic and features Bernard Purdie. The opening track is a great groove.
18.
Mine was a Status Shark II 5 string. Red with White scratch plate. Fell in love, bought it and owned it for 2 years. Was sold due to poverty. It was mine from 2000-2002. I'd love to know where it is now
Similar to this, mine was the Alembic 20th Anniversary, bought in 1989, and sold to fund the Tobias Classic 5. <Pass me that Kleenex will you, love...I feel a touch teary.>
19. I should add that these are also basses that you lusted after, but never got to own.
20.
Status SII #402 - Owned it from 1990 until 2006. It lives in America now. Maybe it'll be back one day...
Rich, you have my condolences.
21. Damn you...how can I sell mine with this beauty on the market?
22.
I was about 16. <sigh> Stanley was endorsing it.
Just look at the distance between those pickups.
23. Can't tell properly from the photo, but I would say definitely not.

25. Traditionally, everything apart from ABM is made in the Far East. ABM has always been UK-made, but some might be made over there nowadays.
