1. Bernard was a major influence on my playing. Good Times is my favourite bassline of all time. The later album. Chicism' is very highly recommended. I went to see Chic at the Apollo in Manchester (can't remember if it was late 70s or early 80s). He was using a BC Rich and his bass sound was awful - just a big mush. It was really disappointing. A truly sad loss, and such tragic circumstances.
2. I've been searching for the ultimate string for many years. I've tried 'em all, but none seem to last, even the coated ones. However, I think I've finally found the Holy Grail with the Ernie Ball coated. And they feel great to play, too. Not cheap, but highly recommended.
3. Bummer. I'll give this a bump up, so you can try to get it sorted.
4. I seem to remember the whole neck being phenolic resin. Could be wrong, though.
5. Silddx's list is spot on. If you want the audience to notice you on a gig, stop playing. The whole heart drops out of the song. Your job is to make the band sound good, mainly the singer and the soloists.
6. This has got to be one of the greatest slap grooves ever. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z1IuD6F3R5I
7. I can't be bothered to practice, even though I'm surrounded by basses all day. Maybe that's why? I keep telling myself I'll practice more, but I think you learn much more by playing gigs.
8. Come on now, move along, nothing to see...haven't you got homes to go to?
9. This is the best opportunity to sell something. Advertise it here, NOW!
10.
"Amazing work, Inspector Hamster! How did you solve the mystery?" cried Captain Bexhill. Hamster lit his pipe and settled back in the high-winged leather armchair. A quiet smile crossed his face. "My dear Bexhill, it was obvious to the very meanest intelligence from the start of this sordid affair. I immediately knew it was one person masquerading as two separate individuals from the clues sprinkled liberally in my path". Hamster leaned forward, jabbing his pipe at Bexhill to emphasise each point "First - no-one ever saw them both in the room at the same time. Secondly - both Jimmy and Maddude were left-handed - I call your attention to the incident with the butter dish. Yet the postings were obviously the work of a right handed man. A clever but futile distraction. Finally we come to the acrostic concealed in Maddude's RIP post. That was the clincher. Why not read it for yourself." Bexhill furrowed his brow in concentration, his lips moving as he deciphered the simple code. Reaching the end, he sat back in his chair, a look of horror in his eyes. "But! But!" he sputtered. "Exactly so" rejoindered Hamster, ringing the bell for tea. And this is what Captain Bexhill read: *
11. On a serious note, if you recall the original posting, I thought it was unbelievably OTT, hence my response. I immediately regretted my posting and felt a bit awful, even though it wasn't meant in bad taste. I even PM'd Ped to apologise. It's just my sense of humour. When I read of the 'suicide' I felt really bad. Thank God it was a scam. But I'll keep my mouth shut in future.
12. I have heard an A/B test with a cheap lead and a very high quality one and there is a definite improvement in clarity. However, your ears soon become accustomed to it. I think a Whirlwind is probably as good as you need. Reliability is the key factor.
13. It's a scam.
14.
great bassline on Word Beez
I LOVE Scritti Politti. This is my favourite track.
15. The original posting from Jimmy seemed way over the top, which is why I responded with a joke. I'm sure other BC's thought the same. When I read the post about his suicide I obviously felt guilty, but I somehow smell a scam.
16. And neither did Jimmy Preston's original post.
17.
Incognito's drummer has just signed on for Level 42's tour this year...
Apparently it's Level 42's 30th anniversary tour.
18.
Francis Hilton pete...dont know about the dvd..
Thanks mate...great post.
19. I've just re-read maddude's post. I may be wrong, but something doesn't quite sound right.
20. Fantastic track! Who is the bass player? Is this DVD released?
21. Bloody hell! I was just mellowing out, as well.
22. BTW, you're looking a lot like Donald Fagen these days. Didn't you look like Me'Shell N last time I saw you?
23. Nice choices, Mr Bubinga. The 80s was not my favourite era, what with all the electronic stuff going on, but this shows there were some decent tunes about. Aria SBs were indeed the basses of choice.
24.
It's sad that someone on this board would have pm'd him for amusement. Quite twisted and, in the light of the tragic outcome, an object lesson in the need for empathy...playground abuse is grim stuff for the recipient. Poor bloke RIP
When he first posted his introduction I stupidly thought it was a wind-up. I replied with a joke, and then quickly realised my error. I'm truly sorry about that and apologise profusely. I have to say, I didn't know he'd been mocked in PMs.
25. We've played there many times over the years and seem to squeeze in OK.
