Why brash, ugly and selfish? Are you stating that he was selfish because he wanted his bass sound to be a main feature of Weather Report? So was JJ Burnel selfish too?
Are you there, Nigel? As Jaco used to say: 'It ain't braggin', if you can back your sh*t up.' So please back your sh*t up.
2.
His sound was sh*t because it was never sympathetic with the music, he was possibly the most selfish bassist ever to gain glory. His technique and musicality were awe inspiring, but his sound was brash, ugly and selfish, and he was only ever out for himself. I have not let the thread down with my comment either, there has been some superb debate on this thread which has really got me thinking. Thank you for challenging my view on Jaco's sh*t sound though, I appreciate it.
Can you elaborate on why you think Jaco's sound was sh*t? How much Weather Report stuff have you listened to? 3. Whatever you think of Jaco and his sound, you couldn't imagine Weather Report without it. Birdland with a dub tone? I still think it's mostly in the fingers. And I would say reliability is the number one factor when you buy anything. You can have the best sound in the world, but if your gear packs up, you're f***ed.
4. Fantastic tone.
5.
Just for future reference: Are you admitting to loving Kenny G, muscly men with mullets, or music to buy chinos to?
I actually hate Kenny G with a passion. Muscley men and chinos?...hmm
6. Crackin' idea. Doug Wilkes experimented with a half-fretted/half-fretless in the 80s, whereby the E and A string had frets and the D and G were fretless.
7. Bloody hell!!!
8. Wow, that's a lovely bass.
9. If you get really stuck try www.alivenetwork.com I used to work for this agency.

12. You've done the gig, now you want to wear the T-shirt.
13. I have to admit to loving this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3k3kqYDm44M...feature=related However, I reckon he could make more money as an Arnold Schwarzenegger lookalike.
14. Only just come out. Someone asked me to try and get one but the UK distributor had sold out. Whether or not Ernie Ball will do another run, they're not sure.
15. Not 100% sure. FM is supposed to be flamed maple top. Looks white to me, or is it the pic? LTD basses are pretty good, but looks like an old model. Personally, I would do a bit more research before buying.
16. I bought the Akai as soon as it came out. I'd been looking for a bass synth pedal for years, one that tracked well and sounded like a proper synth. I got it specifically for a funk band I was in at the time. It was perfect, and the fact you could store patches to memory was a huge bonus. The band split and I traded it in at my local shop for £50. The shop couldn't sell it and sold it for £30. I've seen them on ebay for £250+ I recently spoke to the Akai rep and advised him that the company should reissue this pedal. Why they haven't, I don't know.
17.
I only have TWO Warwick basses left so it matters little to me... but I know where you are coming from!
Love the username BTW.
18. For me it's that back pickup 'burp'. Obviously Jaco comes to mind first. I love the fact that you can have both pickups up full for a smooth sound for slap, and back off the front pickup for a burp. Marcus does this all the time.
19.
in a kinda justification of what I was trying to say I see they have divided their website up into Made in Germany PRO series made in Korea and rockbass in china
Good points.
20. My original post was questioning how manufacturers factor their pricing. I can understand, say, a hand-built bass from the USA having import duty etc. But looking at the Warwick Bootsy and the build options and features, it doesn't seem to add up. The reason I mentioned Ritter was that at least there seems to be an element of painstaking detail. Am I missing something? Almost five and a half grand?
21. It's all in the mids for me.
22.
Nah, that's all cheap sh*t from Spain Have you seen the Ritter Roya? Reminds me of my granddad's armchair, that one.
Beauty is in the eye of the beerholder.
23.
I would pay a lot more money for a Ritter over a warwick, but that's mainly because I see the Ritters as a work of Art and would never take them to a gig at my local. And I probbaly would wash my hands with alcohol before I touched it just afraid of damaging it.
Just been discussing this. Ritters are definitely more a work of art. Personally, I love them.
24.
Eh?
German manufacturing, I meant.
25.
How much are Alembics? However much people are willing to pay.
These are in the Ritter price range, and at least I can see the work put into Ritters.
