1. It's interesting to hear/see people's opinions.
2.
if you got to ask, you ain't never gonna know
So, can anyone define 'soul' with regards to playing bass? Vic's version of 'Norweigan Wood' certainly seems to be soulful to me.
3.
OK, let's have your description of 'soul', then.
I'm still waiting.
4.
I've never seen the official league table of bass players so I don't know who is overrated and who isn't. But I do find the flabbergasted worshippers quite amusing.
Just for the record, I'm not a 'flabbergasted worshipper'. I actually know a great musician when I hear him or her. Try reading the feature about Tal Wilkenfeld in the latest issue of Guitar and Bass Mag.
5.
OK, let's have your description of 'soul', then.
Mmm...
6. I used to subscribe to Premature Ejaculation Monthly, but it kept arriving too early.
7.
Very, very overrated; lousy music - definitely no soul whatsoever. I'll take a good simple bass groove in the pocket of a nice melody anytime!
OK, let's have your description of 'soul', then.
8. One of my faves of all time.
9.
I think you are taking it too seriously anyway it's not who is a good bassist it's who is overrated, as I said before I'm sure Jaco is good but no where near as good as the hero worship he gets would suggest.
How much of his work have you listened to? This has been the main problem with Victor - everyone just picks up on his 'party pieces', which are strictly for trade shows, etc. This is a guy who started playing bass at 3 years'old and was playing major shows - and I'm not just talking crappy pub gigs, but supporting the like of Curtis Mayfield - when he was 6 years' old. Try reading the biography that's available. He is just a genius, and probably the most gifted musician on the planet. As far as Jaco is concerned, listen to his first solo album. I'm not trying to be patronising, but study it, and then make your comments.
10.
I've just come in on this thread and managed to read about 8 pages before I gave up. Some unbelievable comments.
To be honest, I think it was when I saw Pino's name, I lost the will to live. Take those blinkers off...please.

12. I really don't think it's worth posting any more Wooten clips, as it just leads to the inevitable Vic-bashing.
13. It's an amazing gesture. Imagine if all companies were that generous?
14. Like a few BC's, my subscribed BGM didn't arrive, although it was already in the shops last Thursday. Being the complainer I am, I phoned the subscriptions dept and spoke to a very nice lady named Chloe who said it was late going to press. She said she would post a copy out immediately. By yesterday there was still no subscribed copy or Chloe's posted copy. I called again and spoke to a guy who told me Chloe was away. He apologised profusely and said he would post another copy out. Today I still haven't received the subscribed copy, but the two other copies arrived...complete with one set of Elixir Nanoweb and one set of DR High Beams. I was gobsmacked. Now that's what I call customer service!
15. Jeff Berlin famously denounced fretless bass because he thought everyone just sounded like Jaco clones. He's probably right, but Pino is the exception. His fretless playing is integral to the tracks he's performed on being major hits. Lady In Red being a prime example.
16. The Boss DR880 is highly recommended. The preset rhythms really do groove, and the machine has an input for guitar or bass with effects built in.
17.
+1
I don't think I've ever seen a recent live DVD where Verdine isn't miming. The whole thing sounds too good to me, so I reckon a lot of post production goes on. Same with the Eagles DVD.
18.
I was chatting to the guys at the Mag on tuesday / wednesday time... I was told during our chat that the latest issue had just come back from the printers and will be out to subscribers very soon. Checking my mailbox Monday
Ditto
19.
Why don't you just phone up and speak to Mark? For only he has the correct answer
Yep.

Some Critisism

It sounds typical of an inexperienced band. If it was a year ago, you should now bw a lot better and tighter after all the gigging. I hope the drummer has improved...way too busy and out of time. Must have driven you mental.
21. I've always found nothing sounds better than a brand new instrument.
22. Hang on, weren't people knocking this bass a couple of weeks' ago?
23. Nearly Dan have done a few private gigs over the years. They're mainly a few Steely Dan fans who think it's cool to have us at their party. The problem is the other 95% have never heard of SD. We once played a wedding - same situation. We set up in a large doorway and played at miniscule volume to the bride and groom and their half dozen SD fans. The rest of the guests buggered off into the buffet room. There were kids sliding on the floor, like something out of Peter Kay's act. Eventually, the groom's mum stared at us stony-faced and said we should play something to dance to. That was our cue to pack up. Sometimes you just have to take the money and run.
24. I've got a Classic 5 but always wanted a Signature.
25. Tobias Signature in the US. Amazing. http://cgi.ebay.com/Tobias-Signature-5-Str...=item1c0e409de8
