1.
I totally dig slapping-It's great. What I don't like is hearing the same root, octave, flat 7 'grooves'(usually in E minor) and machine gun muted patterns all day at various tempo's,volumes and abilities. After a while it becomes tiring-and to be honest,it's not even that impressive.
I can do it in G minor.
2. Talking of BGM, I have a subscription, but again it's in Smiths and mine hasn't arrived yet. I thought one of the advantages of subscriptions were that you get the mag earlier. Looks a cracking issue, though.
3.
I've been offered discount with Picato strings and was wondering whether anyone has and good or bad experiences with them? They're cheap as chips, which is what worries me, but in order to take advantage of the discount I need to buy in bulk, so don't really want to spend that much money if I'm going to end up with a load of sets of strings I don't like. I've always used Rotosounds Swing bass 5-string and got on very well with them, but they are very expensive.
I have a Picato deal and find them more than adequate.
4.
Just got a copy of Two Against Nature. Its marvellous. Some top toons on there and lovely 'pockets'. mmmmmmm nice!
Great choice, Bilbo. How good is the bass part on Gaslighting Abbie. We covered that song a couple of years' ago. It took ages to sink in, and we only played it about half a dozen times.
5. I love playing slap bass, but I think the fast unmelodic Flea-on-steroids style has definitely had its day.
6. Unbelievable.
7. I'll get me coat (again).
8. Just a bit of a joke, mate.
9. No porbelms, meat.
10. Has anyone ever had their bass gear blow up completely on a gig? What happened, and how did you cope?
11. We had a demo of Line 6 gear last Saturday. The Looper pedal is amazing. Real drummers, not just sampled sounds. Well worth checking out.
12. It's a plug-in-and-play, no messing about amp. The sound is there right away - fat and punchy. Unbelievable headroom.
13. I had one. Awesome! Weighs an absolute ton, though, which is why I had to get rid.
14. During the height of slap mayhem in the 80s, a Peavey rep told me about a masterclass conducted by Joe Hubbard (he of 'Basslines' book fame). The class was full of bassists who were sitting there unplugged. Joe is a great slap player, but also spoke at length on other styles. As soon as the masterclass ended, every single player in the room slapped. The rep described the noise of theses unplugged basses as 'like a million typewriters going at the same time'. A very apt description indeed.
15. The problem with people playing slap in these situations, including music shops, is they seem to want to prove how fast they can do it. Nobody seems to play anything melodic - and there's plenty of melodic groove stuff that isn't at the speed of light: U Can't Hold No Groove, Lopsy Lu, Run For Cover etc.
16.
Maybe we need the bass players version of this: What would be on the list?
This is what I did in our shop.
17.
He just looked like the kid at school who'd forgot to do his homework. He's obviously a legend, but would you agree to do it, without planning ANYTHING? A real shame, i was looking forward to it...
18. I have a set ready to go on my bass, and will be testing them out at the Jazz Cafe gig in January.
19. I was really gutted to miss it this year. What was the problem with Randy Hope-Taylor? I also heard there were some really DUMB questions thrown at Nathan East. Can you play slap????!!!!
20. I have a Markbass LMK. Unbelievably loud! Have heard the GK and it really does kick. The Ashdown Little Giants are not recommended.
21. Last gig of the year for Nearly Dan...Saturday 28 November at The Pyramid and Parr Hall in Warrington. Live DVD also coming soon.
22.
It's all online
Do you have to pay to subscribe?
23.
Yeah,it's cool. I've been reading it for a while-it's been going for just over a year. They have some really good articles.
Is it actually free and totally online?
