1. Who wouldn't want to play after watching that? Brilliant.
2. As a salesman in a music store, the most popular phrase is: 'I fancy learning bass, as I've been told it's easier to learn than guitar.' As the bass player in our band, I've had people say they enjoyed the show and have asked if I did, too. They didn't realise I was playing. If you choose to play bass, you must expect to be invisible. You choose to do your job, which is to basically hold the band together. Try stopping playing half way through a song and see the band and audience reaction.
3.
I don't use it for any heavy compression, for me it's doing it's job if it keeps the B string on a 5'er from booming out and brings the G string from sounding too weak and quiet, so just evening out the levels a tad, it does this with a bit of added 'thickness' which I prefer to a totally tranparant pedal. The switch moves the centre frequency??? from the original guitar pedal they make to a more bass friendly one. Have you read this? http://www.ovnilab.c...diamobass.shtml
Thanks for that...very interesting.
4.
I'm not a big of compressors. I've tried a fair few in the past and I hate how they squash the dynamics. However, I'm quite intrigued by the Diamond Bass Comp. It seems that Paul Turner is taken with it. I watched a YouTube demo, but wasn't impressed. Has anyone tried one of these?
Does it make the souynd punchier? How does the eq switch work?

6.
It's ok. The verse kind of reminds me of 'Deacon Blues',but I think that the chorus is a bit weak. I don't think it stacks up against anything on 'The Nightfly',but then again I don't think he's done much recently that does.
I would agree with that, Paul. I think every artist peaks and then can't live up to that album.
7. I love Guns n Roses 'Welcome To The Jungle'. Amazing groove.
8.
Paul Jackson "Hawk" From the album 'Funk on a stick' (2005). My favorite album of that year. IMO the whole album is brilliant.
Great track.
9. Be interesting to hear the rest of the album.
10.
Just letting you all know that Strings and Things are sending me out a replacement pack and i am going to send my ones back to them for analysis. Lets hope this pack were just duff. Cant fault them for customer service as i told them i couldnt afford to have my bass with no strings so they are sending them out before they get the old ones back! Cant argue at that!
They are a great company for customer service.
11. Here's a song from the forthcoming Donald Fagen solo album, Sunken Condos, released next month. Nice groove and tasty playing by Freddie Washington, I presume. 12. I love that track. Jaco's playing is amazing.
13. I've tried to access the Victor Wooten Fodera track on Youtube advertised on the right hand side of the Basschat main page, but I can't do it. Any suggestions?
14. Working in a music shop, I'm in the favourable position of being able to try out stuff for free. I've tried virtually every brand of strings over the years, and resigned myself to the fact that DR were my favourite brand. However, I recently tried some Dunlop stainless steels. Without plugging the bass into an amp, I was really disappointed, as they sounded quite dull, even though the tension was nice. On a gig I was pleasantly surprised. They sounded great...really full lows and mids, and the top end cut through without being harsh. Please note, this is just my opinion, but it might be worth trying these for yourselves.
15. This thread is back!
16. I love the cabs but I like a very midrange sound, which these do very well. The sound is punchy and focused. However, I'm not sure they will suit a rock situation. Have a look at the slightly bigger New Yorker 804, which has 4x 8 speakers.
17. I'm sure those slapped bass parts would sound ad good finger style,.but at the time slap was well in vogue.
18. It's all dependent on the market at the time. It's not been good for vintage instruments for a while. I bought my Steinberger L2 in 1983 for 950 (full retail was around 1100). I decided to sell it a couple of years ago, as I never played it and I fancied a nice Jazz. I advertised it at 2000, thinking I'd easily get that. No way. I ended up selling it for 1400, and bought a nice 78 Jazz for the same price. To me, Wals seem to be the only basses to really have gone up in value. Or maybe Jaydee? On a final note, I bought an Alembic 20th anniversary brand new in 1989. They were 2000 and limited to 200 pieces worldwide. A few years back they were appearing on eBay for 1500. Even limited editions struggle to go up.
19. I've always liked Shakatak, although a lot of people think it's muzak. George was always in Mark King's shadow. He has got a signature JD.
20. I had this as well. If you don't read, most songs are available online as tabs. If you haven't got enough time, keep to the roots.... Nobody will notice.
21. I was reading a thread where Nige (silddx) had posted and decided to have a good listen to Kit Richardson. f*** me, this is amazing music. Kit has an awesome voice, the recording and production is great, and the musicianship is top class. Nige, your playing and sound are brilliant, and I love the bass part on track 3. I wish I lived in London, so I could see you guys play.
22.
Never bite the hand that feeds you.....
23.
So if you want to see/hear thin lizzy - how you gonna do it bearing in mind that phil is no longer with us??? You go and see limehouse lizzy - so good that they are endorsed by phil's mum
We are endorsed by Donald Fagen's nan.
24.
Oh, FFS!!!
we have a local Bon Jovi tribute, and the singer does an American accent.
25.
I think I'd tend to side with Bilbao and SteveK on the expression in music against just the notes. This is the difference in covers bands who get the notes right but nothing much else...it is playing by numbers. I want to see a band really doing it..with a piece of the player in there adding or maybe even taking the song/track on a bit...this defines good and not so good musos IMV.. and the version is more honest, IMO... Not that it is the be-all and end-all...and I can enjoy a night of bland covers or tributes easily enough, it is just that I think the band might be missing a trick.. but then also, the band will not realise they are missing that trick. ...oh well. not the end of the world, but I know what I would prefer
Bilbao? Tell me, John - is that a typo or a tribute to Bilbo?
