I remember when the '79's were the crappy modern ones. It's just a matter of time until someone posts about how vintage their 2008 sounds compared to the new crap It's happened to the 60's, 70's and 80's so far. I wonder if in the future better will have a tangible definition? Till then it will just have to be like cool.
It sounds better to me.
It would be interesting to know if it sounded like that in '61, wouldn't it? Or, could the pickups have mellowed with age, or something...?
Good point. Now where's my Delorean when I need it?
-
Someone bought an original '61 Strat in to our shop. As soon as it was plugged in you could hear how much better it sounded. As a bass player I hate the back pickup on Strats, but this was fat and smooth - no harshness whatever. The whole sound and tone was just amazing. I've been after a Jazz for years and the '79 model I recently bought is a winner. It just sounds so much better than modern ones. I think older Fenders were a bit hit and miss. It's just luck finding the right one. The best Jazz I've tried recently is the new American Deluxe, especially in passive mode.

I didn't want to open the Tal Wilkenfeld debate again, but I think she and Rhonda are equally as good. There were a few nasty remarks last time the subject was featured, especially as to why Tal got the job. She got it because she's an amazing player.
I guess it depends where you are looking Pete, I wouldn't think of him as overlooked having toured and recorded with Benny Green in his early career and being sufficiently admired to make solo albums and play for Sting amongst a host of others. He is a fabulous player and was at 19 when he first appeared.
I've heard a fair amount of his playing, Jake. He just has it all.
-
Yet another player that gets overlooked. I was trying to find a YouTube example of a track from George Duke's 'Face The Music' album from a few years ag called '10 Mile Jog', but it isn't on there. Christian's playing is unbelievable. I urge you to seek out this track.
I think Rhonda is a good player, but the solo seemed like the kind of solo 'expected' from the bass player of Jeff Beck and a little contrived. It's like the bass solo I've heard a thousand times before from a thousand different bass players, not particularly unique IMO I will always love her playing with Prince though, particularly stuff like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8vITKFi2W_o
Good post. What an amazingly tight band. Rhonda's groove is sublime.
Does anyone have ONLY bass in their monitor? I just have a decent band mix.
A monitor? What's that? -
Here's Rhonda Smith - Prince's bass player, along with many other credits to her name - performing a bass solo with Jeff Beck's band. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XAynG1MsHkY

I once played an entire set completely out of tune. But I was extremely pissed at the time.
I've though it myself when listening to Jimmy Page's 30 minute bowed guitar solo on their live album. As much as I love led zep, that did drag on and seem self indulgent to me, but I guess there must have been some audience members who were in awe for the whole duration, which would prove me wrong. I know I've been guilty of being musically self-indulgent occasionally. Surely most of us have had the occasion during a jam/performance when you're thinking more about your own enjoyment from playing the song than that of the audience? If not, guess i'll grab my coat...
Jimmy Page bores me to tears, especially the bowed stuff.

Internet pricing from UK stores has been silly. Great news for the public, bad news for music stores. Last month four music shops went under, including Dolphin. It's scary. It's illegal to stop shops from advertising discounted prices online, but basically the wholesalers such as Fender, Yamaha, Roland, Peavey etc, have been saying to dealers, 'Look, do you want to survive?' I would say go into your local shop and talk deals.
-
If you've studied improvisation, then you should solo. Why not? You would expect it in, say, a jazz situation. But I've played in some blues situations where the guitarist thinks it's OK to play long and boring solos. Slow blues = obligatory BB King-type solo = pass me the gun.

My rig is compact and light. We never play without a PA, so I'm at the mercy of our sound engineer, who I have to trust. My rig is there as a monitor for me and the guys on stage. The better it sounds to me, the better I play. It would be pointless having bigger gear. -
I think i mentioned on here before but i used to play in a band wth a guitarist/alco who alway wore black leather trousers on stage so he could piss himself without the punters knowing. His boots stank and NOBODY else would lift his mic stand.
After trying every string on the market, it's now DRs all the way for me.
I finally have a name for the condition! - I used to suffer really badly with the ehem...'Adrenaline Poo' and like Ped, if a venue didn't have the facilities to accomodate, it'd just make the situation worse. Last few gigs I hadn't given it a second thought to be honest. Maybe I'm cured! The whole 'need to go' thing when getting ready to play a gig is strongly linked to the natural 'flight or fight' response we have within us and the effect it has on your body. As I understand it, your subconscious senses that you are getting nervy, maybe anxious/ adrenaline starts kicking in. It can't 'see' what is happening so prepares the body for action - it then sidelines other 'functions' to divert energy to what it thinks you'll need to survive. I can't say exactly why it happens, but the side effect for some, one way or another is the errr, how shall we say 'loosening of the bowel'.. Which is where the phrase 'sh*t scared' comes from, I think. Many have found that Cognitive Behavioural Therapy can clear up these 'urge to go' by safely reteaching your subconscious mind to not get in a tiz like an over zealous guard dog everytime you do something that gets the anxiety levels up a bit!
Definitely seems to be a Mods thing.

Sorry, peeps. I often leave home and do not need the toilet until I get home 6 hours later. I am, of course, an android and do not drink liquids.
These are serious issues.

Personally, I'm in awe of his slap technique, but I would maintain that this is a trade show-only demonstration. He can play any style he wants to. I will admit it does go on a bit too long, though.

There is absolutely nothing worse than desperately needing a piss mid gig.
