1. The thing is, I played the newer songs spot on, but the songs I've played for years were crap.
 2.
I know what you mean - the more uptight/nervous you get, the worse you play, then you get even more uptight - a vicious cycle. What venue was it Pete? I couldn't see on your band website
The Glee Club.
 3. Played a new venue in Nottingham last night. We had a great night but I played really badly. Messed up songs that I've played regularly for over ten years. From the first bum note I was on edge and had to concentrate really hard, whereas I'd normally be really relaxed. Consequently, I kept messing up. This doesn't happen very often, but when it does it's really frustrating. I know it's purely psychological, but I'm sure everyone suffers from this.
 4. Having read this month's BGM 's Bass Scholarship with Jon Clements, I had a look at his YouTube channel. Some great stuff by him and interesting footage, too. http://www.youtube.com/casime
 5. The same friend is also selling a J-Retro preamp for £130. Two years old, but mint.
 6. A good friend of mine has asked if I'd try to sell his Squier CV Jazz. Looking for £230. Six months old. If anyone's interested, please PM me and I'll forward his details. 7.
Pffft What's going on????? You've actually got a subscription copy before I got mine from the local shop? That hasn't happened for a while.
About time!
 8. Just received my BGM (early because I subscribe). 65 basses you should try...didn't include Roscoe or Tobias. Gutted.
 9. Just played an Aspiration Deluxe 4 and a Contemporary J 4. Unbelievably well set up, straight out of the box. Great workmanship and sound. Absolute winners.
 10. Great stuff. Amazing tone.
 11. I've sold a fair few of those basses. They play and sound amazing. The active mid boost really punches through. Highly recommended.

 19.
oops
20. The gist of this thread is the guitarist's 'I can play guitar, so bass will be a piece of piss' mentality.
 21.
Doesn't Walter Becker play bass on some of the Steely Dan stuff and Donald Fagen solo stuff?
Becker is an amazing bass player.
 22.
I remember an old saying about where you 'connect' to when playing different instruments; with guitarists it's their heads, with drummers it's their arses, and with bassists it's their balls (not sure about the ladies on this one). For some odd reason I can see what it means, and I know what I like to connect to most. The thing about bass playing is that, stereotypically, along with the drummer you sacrifice your ego to bed down the sound for everyone else, and that often requires being tastefully repetitive. If a guitarist can think like that, they'll do OK on bass. I marvel at those bass players, often in metal bands, who spend the whole evening thumping away at single note runs, then, when given their four bar solo at the end of the evening, produce something utterly amazing. Playing bass is a state of mind - if you've got it, it's the best place in the band.
Nice post.
 23.
We swapped instruments around once at rehearsal and my guitarist played my bass. He had the same facial expression my cat had right after I had him neutered. Can't remember what he played like!
24. I have a lot of customers saying they have tried guitar and have failed, but they have been told bass is much easier to play. This thread is mainly about how people approach bass, especially if they already play guitar. It's just so much different.
 25.
Innit! Cos playing a few chords and treading on some pedals is sooooo hard, isnt it?! I'm in no way a learned guitar player, but I know many chords, and I know lots of harmonies and I know how to strum. I could get away with it. However, anyone with bad rhythm and bad technique simply will not be able to make a bass sound good! Truckstop
Totally agree.
