Mark Adams had the hugest bass tone of all the 70s and 80s funk players. For anyone that's never heard of him, please check him out. Monster player.
-
sh*t. He's my bass hero. Extremely sad news.
-
I'll definitely order it...but only after I've watched Eastenders.

I'd consider a swap for an acre of the moon.

What was your first bass and why did you start playing?
Pete Academy replied to damo200sx's topic in Bass Guitars
My brother started to learn guitar and bought an acoustic. I used to play on it and learned some chords from Bert Weedon's 'Play In A Day' book. Brother bought an electric guitar. One day he turned up with a Vox bass he'd bought for a tenner. I started playing it and we used to jam together. -
You could print this out and give it to him: Major = Minor = Sounds like it'd double his musical knowledge!

that Weather Report reminded me I used to have a DCI vid of Omar with Victor called : Let it Flow http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bJOzd2mp95I...feature=related great playing towards the end.. 6/8 again
Great playing. Another clip I haven't seen. Sublime drumming.
+1. I remember Weather Report being on the South Bank Show when I was a kid and the Victor Bailey/Omar Hakim rhythm section really got my attention. Hakim was so flamboyant but ultra-tight and Bailey was for me the epitome of what a bass player should be - funky and looking cool! My favourite track with those two playing is Waltz in Db off Domino Theory. From his opening fill to the end, Hakim is amazing! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sJIS1vVfVaU This is good too: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fq1ygko_PQ8. Loving the 80s visuals!
Those are two incredible tracks. Thanks for posting...not seen them before.

Narada Michael Waldon 'Should Have Loved Ya '
Pete Academy replied to DMcCann's topic in Theory and Technique
I absolutely love that guy. -
If I had to choose one drummer to play with it would be Omar Hakim. In this clip he's dead on the groove, despite putting in fills that would normally be annoying in the hands of a lesser player. Totally drives the band and manages to add his own flair to the song. Brilliant stuff. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nEvCPvLh_60

I've never measured my hands but they are small. I hate trying to play 6-string basses. Many years ago, when I was doing some teaching, a 14-year-old lad turned up for his first lesson. His hands were tiny and he couldn't stretch the frets at all. I thought he'd have given up by the next week's lesson. He turned up a week later and could stretch the frets easily. Totally natural player. You never can tell. Remember Jango?

After whatever was done yesterday and quitting and reloading my browser (Safari) it's been working fine.
You certainly were.

As previously mentioned... Jamerson is a God on here.

Since using a Markbass head I just set everything at 12 o'clock and use the two filters. I boost mids on my bass.

Dynamics is very important. Each band member should be aware of it. I think it's something learned by gigging a lot.

This has recently been released. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Steely-Dan--Perfec...4245&sr=1-1 Mike McDonald is on it. We covered this version of Showbiz Kids. Seems like there may be a lot of it on YT, and reviews seem to indicate the quality is poor.

What People Want In Their Bass Player
Pete Academy replied to BassoRidiculoso's topic in Theory and Technique
I think that guy is spot on. Great post. -
Can you edit your topic title (i've added 'TO GO' for you) as this forum is for recycling unwanted items… your title implies that you are selling, if thats the case I think eBay would be the best bet for your star… I hear they are selling like hot cakes. Something like 'Star… free to a good home' would be far more suitable here Shep
I tried ebay but the shipping is expensive. Three quid per light year. I'd prefer if someone would collect. I had a reply from Grok from a neighbouring galaxy, who happened to be passing through, but he let me down. Typical.
One thing that has surprised me about the "Jaco tone" is simply how consistent he was...despite everything that was going on in his life. Some examples. The DCI video (made in 85/86) shows him playing a bitser (60's J body with maple Pbass fretted neck) but it sounds like him. The Birelli Lagrene tour recordings from the same time sound a bit harsher, but he was playing Jbasses with DiMarzio pickups (I assume his own basses were gone by then?). The only instance where I can hear a difference is the fretless section of the DCI video where he plays Jerry Jemmott's hollow body bass..but even then within a few seconds his personality is there. There is also a YouTube clip of him playing a JD. Sounds like him...not Jaco sounding like Mark King. I've always taken this as evidence that your sound is yours...what instrument you play (plus strings, pickups etc etc) is only a part of your music.
Dead right. I think there's a short track on the SMV album where Marcus and Stanley swap basses and still sound like themselves.
I took the poster's thread to mean " are people who criticise JP's tone making an educated crtitcism?" and then, merely put his own point of view across as to why he liked it. For me, Jaco Pastorious is not someone who is often played on my stereo. I can't deny his influence on the world of bass playing and so, bought and listened to, what he did, in order to make a judgement if it's for me or not, and it wasn't. However, I think it wrong to personally attack the poster and to make personal comments about his mental and physical state. If you dislike his posts, don't read them.
Agreed. Anyway, as soon as my scars heal, I'm off to murder some chavs.
If you're an artist with an original voice you are going to attract criticism. Also no matter how talented you are there are always going to be more people in the world who don't like what you did/are doing than who like it. Add to that the fact that people are more likely to complain about stuff they don't like, than rave about stuff they do. That's how it is. As an artist you either have/grow a thick skin and shrug it off, or pack it in. TBH I don't have time for whinging artists, these days it should be obvious what they're getting into. If they don't have the stomach for a bit of unconstructive criticism, then make way for someone who does. Anyone who's influenced by a few unkind comments on YouTube isn't much of a artist or a fan. Plus Jaco's dead. He doesn't care anymore what we think of him. A quick trawl through Off-Topic will show that Pete Academy has a long history of getting worked up about issues that he has little influence over. If I was one of his band members or co-workers I would be a little concerned about his mental and physical health (all that impotent rage has to go somewhere and I doubt that an internet forum is sufficient release), but since I'm not I don't really care any more than to write this single post.
Yet again I try to post a legitimate thread and get these kind of comments. For your interest, my mental faculties are pretty much OK. And again it seems that the thread has been misconstrued. Apologies if people thought it was another 'who's the best player' thread. And I wasn't denigrating anyone's technique.

I would say he made that back pickup sound. I don't really recall hearing that sound before Jaco. But I might be wrong.
