1. Imagine 'Teen Town' played on anything but the back pickup of a Jazz?
 2.
I think it is very much a "marmite" tone. While it has its benefits, the fact that many people describe such tones as "burpy" does not indicate a universally positive perception. In the wrong hands, I think such tones sound like a bass version of Vic Reeves doing the pub singer. Jennifer
Good point.
 3.
I totally dig Jaco's sound. In fact it was Jaco and Marcus that made me want a Jazz Bass initially.
Me too.
 4. I've recently noticed that some people are not fans of Jaco's sound. Fair enough. Have these people judged this on Youtube clips or have actually listened to his sound on the albums? The back pickup sound on a Jazz bass cuts through a mix. It allows you to be heard. It also requires a lot of pressure on the string, and good technique. Try listening to Bernard Edwards, too.
 5. I used to take the camper van out there, but since the hike in petrol prices, it's become rather uneconomical.
 6.
ooh. nice star mate. no money at the minute though due to recently spending a fortune on guitar knobs.
7. I am selling the star Kornephoros, based in the Andromeda Galaxy, which I bought a couple of years ago. I purchased this as an investment, but the recession has affected the market value of stars considerably. (Along with the price of guitar knobs, which have doubled recently.) I paid fifty quid for it. I'm open to offers or trades. Anything considered.
 8. I've been gigging for so long that the mere thought of stopping would be a shock to the system., I'd have to say that, if given the choice, I'd play for nothing.
 9.
There are a few above already said. But i will add. Smooth - Santana/Rob Thomas Chicago song - Sanborn. Rosanna - Toto. I keep forgetting - Michael Mcdonald Night in Tunisa - Dizzy Gillespie. [ And the Chaka Khan cover] Garry
Chicago Song is a great track.

 11. USA Tobias basses used to be the dog's bollocks. I played a USA Classic 5 for 15 years. They seem to be totally out of vogue these days. Nobody seems to bring them into the UK, especially since they now belong to the Gibson family. Stores in the USA don't seem to stock them, yet they are still very much in production. Anyone own a US model?
 12.
i do it for the pure admiration that i get from the bar staff.
13. Interesting responses. Basically, do you love playing bass (live) enough to do it for nothing? Simple as that.
 14.
is the lyte referring to weight? coz a light fender is something i've yet to witness
Yep. Light as a feather.
 15. We sold a P Bass Lyte today. Redburst foto flame. Great bass, great sound. Lovely to play.
 16. I can't stand him or his playing.
 17.
Pete, your not involved in the governments 'The Big Plan' are you....... eh... eh...
18.
Interesting stuff. I reckon that just about everybody who's on Basschat would agree that playing music with other people is probably the most fun you can have with your clothes on. I also think that in an ideal financial situation a lot of us would actually pay to play, not just do it for free! I remember the first time I got paid for a gig I gave the money to charity. In my youthful foolishness I felt guilty about being paid for doing something I loved. But now I've got two big hungry teenage daughters both learning to drive it's a different story!
Great post.
 19. If your band has been playing a set number of venues for years for a certain amount of money, and suddenly those venues say they can't afford to pay you anymore, would your band just give up playing, or simply carry on playing at the same venues for free?
 20. The question is: what if you never got paid again? Would you just play for the sheer enjoyment? Would your band still enjoy the gigs, knowing there was no payment for them?
 21.
I bet there would be some truly inspiring music out of that scenario.........
Definitely.
 22. I think it's a question of how much do you actually love playing live. Would you sacrifice that money?
 23.
So, at last, music becomes a revolutionary act.
Purely hypothetical.
 24. I'm basically asking whether the need to play live overrrides the need for money. Do we enjoy playing enough to disregard the pay?
 25.
There's WAY too many varaibles: Covers/Originals? Effort involved in getting to gig/making it happen Enjoy playing with the other musicians? Financial situation in the rest of your life? Si
Let's just say the government decided it was illegal for musicians to get paid for gigs.
