2.
what a track... this is Gold Steve.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h7e2pIXy83U
In my top 5 all-time faves.
3.
That, Dear Sir, is all down to morals. How much they paying?
Agreed. But let's say they just offer you the gear for free?
4. Bump for my favourite bass maker.
5. I remember reading an interview with Paul Weller where he said he had gear literally thrown at him by companies desperate for him to use it, and he ended up selling most of it. The irony is that when you can afford to buy anything, the companies give it to you free. If you were offered an endorsement and could get the bass or amp for free, would you use it because it cost you nothing, despite the fact that you didn't really like it? Personally, I wouldn't.
6. If i have to learn a song I play it a few times to get it into my head. I then usually learn the root chord changes, then add the fills. If there are a lot of chords, I learn everything by patterns on the fretboard. For instance, in our set we do Deacon Blues, which has a lot of changes. I couldn't tell you the chords, as I just learn the bass part as linear patterns. Does this make sense? Works for me.
7. I've joined the dots but can't see Marcus Miller.
8. When we first started we did a 2 hour set straight through, Then we realised that at our ages we needed a piss break.
9. 1 x 45 mins first set. 1 x 60 mins second set. Plus encores (if we get them).
10. I just can't stand busy drummers. A few years' ago I went to see my mate's Bryan Adams tribute band. Good musicians performing the songs faithfully, but the drummer thought he was great by playing fills every 8 bars. Ruined the gig. Give me a good solid drummer and I'm happy.
11.
I don't know if you've heard of Sharay Reed, but he's a Chicago based session bassist that's getting quite a reputation in the States. He's probably best known on the gospel circuit, like a lot of the stunning bass players you hear on RnB, sould & pop records from the States. Anyway, I can't get enough of these two YouTube clips of him playing at his church. It's obviously some kind of music celebration event, but I tell you what - that would be my kind of church! Clip 1 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pATcvr3zAhg The fill he plays starting at 2:08 makes me soil myself every time I hear it. Check how the people watching react too! Amazing playing. Clip 2 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q_KuD0AjWdE What they call in Gospel a shout groove where the band grooves on a progression while the choir and soloists improvise or shout stuff out. An absolute master class on tight, in the pocket, powerful but incredibly imaginative playing. And he looks like he's loving it too! I love the dancing preacher dude towards the end too. So yeah, Sharay Reed. I love how he commits to some pretty crazy playing - pushing the boundaries to the limit but always staying on the ONE and doing his job. He is BASS. What do you think? Any other gospel type players you want to flag up? Sometimes you hear their playing, think WOW but have no idea who they are. Cheers!
I love the guy. Sublime sense of groove. Look what he's playing over Pino's line on 'Chicken Grease'. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2JBPFYjY01I...feature=related
12.
I've modded my passive Ibanez to switch between series and parallel wiring at the flick of a switch (just check out the build thread in my sig). There's a copy of the diagram I used posted in there somewhere - that may help things along HTH, Ian
Thanks Ian, I'll take a look.
13. The 'Funk And Groove' thread is the place to be.
14. Interesting stuff. In layman's terms I find the Roscoe tone is great, as I love a deeper midrange fingerstyle sound, which sounds amazing in a band situation, and really cuts through. However, I've always thought the slap tone is lacking in high end 'zing'. How would the rewire affect this?
15. I've been on Harmony Central looking at reviews of my Roscoe SKB5, and someone mentions buying one that the original owner had wired 'parallel instead of series'. He said it sounded better. I don't understand this sort of thing, but I'm intrigued. How would this affect the sound? Anyone out there that can offer an explanation?
16.
Great tracks. That AWB is amazing...highly recommended. The Temptation track is pure early Commodores-style. Never heard the last track before. Great bass part.
Sorry, what I meant to say is the AWB album that features that track is well worth buying. Amazing album...not a bum track on it.
17.
A bit lost in this delightful, long thread so hope none of these has been posted yet...trust on your understanding the video is not very inspiring, but imagine AWB paying tribute to Maceo...how cool is that? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pubC--6BuGw Mid-tempo funkiness by the Temptations http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZEt28c6QxTM Dance music the way it should be done...with killer funk guitar and a cool bassline http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Jh4aGQBUZM
Great tracks. That AWB is amazing...highly recommended. The Temptation track is pure early Commodores-style. Never heard the last track before. Great bass part.
18. Fantastic stuff, Bilbo. Especially loved Black Friday of course. Excellent.
19.
Any pics would help. Nice to see condition before buying. Sounds like a good price for it. This is the twin channel Markbass i think. ? Cheers Dave
It's pretty much mint, but I'll try to get some pics done.
20.
Some modern Stevie Wonder.. this track is amazing.. as is the bass playing.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BAxjKhE8TII
Killer track.
21. I'm thinking about selling my Markbass LMK amp so I can buy a new LMIII. I want £400 for it. No trades. Anyone interested? I would post free in the UK. Just want to know if anyone's serious.
22. Self belief, he has it in bucketloads. I remember when I was a kid starting out, I developed the same thing. I could play a few things on guitar, and my brother sent me out to buy a Marshall fuzz pedal from a local music shop. Armed with my few riffs I intended to blow the shop staff away, but luckily one of the staff, who was a great player, demoed it to me. I bought the pedal and was so glad I didn't try it myself. He's crap. The internet is his music shop. Bless him.
23.
if you like it, why not make it worth your while.... my dad used to say 'whats worth doing is worth doing well'..
I'll bear that in mind and try again.
24. It's also whether or not you think it will benefit you. Whenever I see Doddy doing this technique, I think I'll learn it, but then I think: 'Can I be arsed?'
