3.
The intro of "River People" by Weather Report has an awesome octave line. Very tricky to get the feel right too, that will be a real test of your skills!
I've been practising that bass line recently. Very tricky indeed.
4.
Whilst Basschat is a kindof community, where we should all hopefully treat each other with respect, I always look at items I`m buying in this way: Is it worth the asking price to me? if yes, I really don`t care how much the seller paid for it - that`s really not of consequence to me as the buyer. If I`d previously seen something go for, say £250, that I wanted, but didn`t get there in time, now being sold for £400, provided the £400 was either a good, or fair price, it`s just my tough luck for not being quick enough when it was £250. That`s life - it`s not always fair. Another thing to consider maybe, when someone is selling something ridiculously low on here, does anyone point out that the market value is much higher, so the seller should maybe raise the price?
I recently tried to sell an immaculate Stingray 4. The cheapest online new retail price was £1095, so I though £750 was fair, considering its condition. At the same time there were two other Stingrays on BC for £600. I ended up selling it to a mate for £650. Those other Stingrays were way too cheap IMO, but we're in cash-strapped times.

6.
Perhaps the most famous bass line of them all? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_4IRMYuE1hI
Yep
7. Judging by the amount of Jacko tunes recognisable by the bassline - Bad, Thriller, Wanna Be Starting, Don't Stop, Billie Jean, etc - do you think they started life with the bass part and were written around that?
8. Don't know if it's been mentioned, but that one by The Cure played on double bass.
9.
I have to agree the 'one' is 'Summer Nights' from Grease. Every generation is up for it. What about 'You Can't Hurry Love'? Supremes or Collins versions. And what about Bach's 'Air On A G String'? Or 'Mars' from Holst's 'The Planet Suite'? Or the 'shark theme' from 'Jaws'? - two notes and everyone is on board
Definitely the shark theme.
10. I think it's fairly obvious that many people join BC just to buy and sell. It's been brought up before, hasn't it? I can see Bubinga's view. It's a shame to see your instrument sold, thinking it's going to a good home, only to see it for sale again at an inflated price.
11. I'm not condoning this site, but as a non-reader it could be quite useful. Apologies to Doddy, Bilbo et al, but it's a quick fix.
12.
I will sometimes use tabs off the net to save time if I want to learn a cover quickly, but the problem with sites like these is the accuracy of the transcriptions (this is the same with tab or squiggles)! I quickly looked up a few tabs on this site – some were quite good, some were overly simplified and some were just plain wrong! On the other hand, where would you find such a wide selection of transcriptions in standard notation on the net for free??
Totally agree.
13. I know this could be controversial but for someone that needs to learn songs in a hurry, this website is quite useful. Let's say someone asks you to stand in for a covers band at short notice. For me, as a non-reader, it would be useful.
14. There's a free tab website called Songsterr, that was advertised on the Bass Player mag website. I had a quick peek. It not only gives you the bass tab for loads of songs, but also plays the track alongside, using a simple keyboard backing. I looked at a couple of Steely Dan songs and they were pretty bad. However, I checked out the tricky bass part for the Chili Peppers 'Mellowship Slinky' and it was quite good. Opinions please. Good or bad?
15. I think if there was a number one choice it would have to be Peaches,
16. Aha!
17. Sounds like Lydia/Funkhauser, and certainly looks like her.
18.
No it's not.
The plot thickens.
19.
I think you are thinking of Lydia or however you spell her name.
I think that's the same person, having re-invented herself.
20. Apparently BassIda has become Prince's new bass player. She was formerly Ida Funkhauser. But wasn't she the woman that was on YouTube years ago playing Cameo and Marcus covers? Always thought thought she was a great player and destined for greater things.
21. Great Maceo track. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NHbiGBtVlJE...feature=related
22. Did Raw Stylus only do that one album? What a classic.
23.
So what did music shops do when woolworths were selling the cheap fodder you see on the bay now??
Eh?
24. This has been the bane of real music shops for years, ever since Argos started doing musical equipment. You can't stop it, so you have to just hope people will come into a proper music store and get the right advice. However, in these cash-strapped times, you can't blame people for shopping at these discount stores. Who needs advice on a guitar stand? I had a customer come in today, looking for a guitar for her young daughter. She went to Argos first and was completely confused. But Lidl?
