1. When you play the bass part to a song, most people don't recognise it. What bass lines would you say the average non-musician could recognise? Billie Jean Peaches Good Times/Rappers Delight The Chain/Formula One theme Another One Bites The Dust What would you say is the most recognised?
2. In remember that documentary first time.
3. I bought a Steinberger L2 in 1983. I waited 6 months for it, as they were so popular. I recently sold it and bought a Fender 1979 Jazz. Great bass, but it was just gathering dust.
4. A track from our CD 'Live At The Stables'.
5. We palyed a triple bill with Talon a few years ago in Liverpool. Great band. Not sure who the bassist is.
6.
Harsh......and pointless.
Certainly is.
7.
Have you ever been honoured to meet anyone? Really? I've met a few of my heroes and always been underwhelmed. Stevie Wonder's sh*t stinks, and he doesn't even have the common courtesy to use the bog brush. Sychophants like you should be shot like pigs.
What the f*** are you on about?
8.
i think on the whole if im honest, theory is the lord...but one dont come without tother... i know as an audience member what i would prefer to see... a few notes being played with groove, even if its two throughout... above all though is some flare... groove on its own is not all the time enough...the end of the day its an expression of you and the way you like to play...groove with flair is what really shows your personality.... i know my theory (to an extent) not like some of the guys on here, but groove and flair is what entertains me.... you can make one note sound good if you got it in you... i got to be honest i wish i knew theory like Jakes Bass and Bilbo..(i believe you guys know your sh*t ? as well as others) but ive always taught my self and its difficult when your not in a geographical position to get a good bass teacher, and you dont have someone to ask when some theory gets confusing.... listening alot has helped me and i can solo because of years of playing in the dark...i get lost though sometimes,9yes when i cant find the light switch) and wouldnt want to be let loose live, if i hadnt worked it out..thats where i think theory would help me and make me feel more confident doing something off the cuff... like i said in my humble opinion, a great bassist has all of these....but groove and flair i wanna watch....
That was my original take on this thread.
9. It's a good scheme. Shop and buyer friendly.
10. The New Slap Bass Program by Alex Sklarevski. Highly recommended.
11. Unbelievable clip. What a band!
12. Nice to see this thread still going.
13.
Always thought funk was a 'feel' thing as opposed to any particular technique or sound employed. Anyone agree that Andy Fraser could be considered a funk player (on an EB3 ffs!)?
Andy Fraser is amazingly funky. The bass line on Alright Now is indeed a funky part.
14. In the 70s the P and J basses were pretty much standard for most players. Louis Johnson used one before turning to Musicman for his signature sound. Byron Miller is a killer player. George Duke has used some amazing players. I think his album 'Standing In The Light' (forgive me if I've got the title wrong) showcased Louis Johnson, and more recently he used Christian McBride.
15. Love this.
16. Great clip. That sounds totally live. Bernard could make any bass sound great.
17. I first saw Janek doing a Bass Player Live clinic on YouTube with the late Hiram Bullock. I thought his groove was amazing. I love the muted sound he gets with his thumb. Having met him in person I can honestly say that he's a lovely guy, who works hard, and believes in himself and his art. A true musician. I've read through most of the thread that BBC was involved in, and I was disgusted. To reiterate what other members said: We should be honoured that a player of his stature and experience be a part of this forum. Imagine the advice he would have given for nothing, just like Joe Hubbard has?
18. The common denominator seems to be a lack of venues, as many are closing. I used to play in a covers band in the 80s and we used to do 3 or 4 gigs a week in Stoke-on-Trent alone. We had at least 15 local regular venues, plus private gigs. That is now down to one venue. Scary stuff.
19.
Generally yes... a bit! The recession has generally hit all gigs over the past couple of years (not to mention the smoking ban) and there have been poorer turnouts as a rule, thru not at the gigs that we have always done well at, they seem to have held up OK! My rock band hasn't played as much as usual due to guitar players work commitments & the singer's problems with his voice, so we've tended to stick to places where we know we are going to do OK - the new blues rock band has played to a few pretty empty pubs but the bigger gigs seem to have pretty well attended....! How have yours been - I imagine that you will generally play the bigger curcuit gigs??
It's been a weird year. Our keyboard player/manager said that if this year had poor turnouts, we might pack it in. It's been the opposite. We have done less gigs, but every one has been a virtual sellout. I think this is mainly due to national advertising, Facebook, Google adwords, and the fact that we have gigged for over 13 years. I would say never give up, and use whatever is out there for publicity.
20.
Not as many gigs but somehow theres more in the kitty. Last two gigs with the original band coming up this month then its a few months off to write tunes/get drunk. Covers wise, who knows. Depends on what takes my fancy. Overall its been a good year.
Good stuff.
21. This also includes the pro players doing sessions, shows, etc.
22. What kind of year have you had regarding gigs? Has there been a poorer turnout? Has the recession hit your gigs? What have you done to compensate? What are your plans for next year?
23. This might help: http://business.highbeam.com/137487/articl...ck-actual-proof Seems like you can download the article on a free trial basis.
