1.
What a player! And he has a wickid collection of basses. His tone is fantastic, suits the band perfectly. A mate of mine met him last year and said he's a really nice bloke, humble and has not forgotten his roots. Just thought I would big him up because he seems to get a lot of flak.
Sorry Nige, but only us northeners are allowed to use the term 'bloke'. But I believe he is a top geezer.
2. He may be a top bloke, but as top blokes go, Janek out-tops him in the top bloke league table. And Janek can do magic tricks, too.
3. I knew his dad, Kenneth. Excellent commentator.
4. I've just read through some of the original post with Janek getting slated. I honestly don't think he deserved it.
5. I totally agree. I joined Basschat after the Janek business, so I never got involved in why he was so unpopular. All I can say is he's an amazing musician - not just a bass player - very humble about his abilities, and is vastly clued up about the music business. He does everything himself, without the aid of a manager/agent. I can't imagine why people turned such a great musician away from this forum. Please enlighten me.
6. I like the fact that he doesn't use a manager or agent and does everything himself. He's achieved his status through sheer hard work. He also said he's been so busy he's only seen his wife for 32 days up to yet this year. Lucky bugger, I say!
7. Our shop hosted a clinic by Janek last night. I have to say he's one of the nicest blokes I've ever met, and a truly awesome musician. I also had the pleasure of meeting StingrayPete and Tauzero and his good lady. A good night.
8. As much as I like 'Rikki Don't Lose That Number', I've played it on every gig for almost 14 years.
9. I've seen this bass and can vouch that it's an absolute bargain.
10. Get rid of the missus.
11. Saturday Night Fever.
12. very nice.
13. Six weeks for one song is ridiculous. Your band mates are lazy piss-takers. Ditch them and get with people who are committed

15. To the OP, no you obviously don't need to read music to be in a band. I can't read a note but I have to admit that it's lost me some gigs, mainly cruise jobs. It took me a fair while to learn our set, so it would have been useful to read music and have a written score to work from. But saying that, it improved my ear training no end. Our brass players are rteally the only musicians that follow a score, and I sometimes envy them being able to sit in with any musical situation at short notice. I think it's more important to develop a good sense of time and groove. The best reader in the world won't get the job if he or she doesn't possess those qualities.
The fact is, if you learn to read but don't have a situation where you can apply it often enough, you will just be semi-literate and be a musical chav. To be a decent sight reader you need to be in situations where you can apply it often. You'll need challenges to develop as a sight reader. Go for it if you want to play jazz or be a session musician, or play in a band full of readers. It's also very good to learn carpentry, it does no harm and I don't know anyone who said they were worse off because they learnt it.
Musical chav? Perish the thought.
17.
Babylon Sisters...
Fantastic chord changes.
18.
Never liked Peg, just too major.. chord progression just feels like its trying to hard to be 'popular'. Black Cow on the other hand, I imagine would be amazing with a fretless bass, and really nice chords and harmony that've got room to breathe too.
Good choice.
19. Dirty Work and Bad Sneakers should also be OK.
20. Our singer once played me Haitian Divorce on acoustic. Works surprisingly well.
21. Incredible clip. Who's the drummer?
22. Another little bump up for this event.
23.
This SMV one works nicely I think: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t6cD3lQ7ZXA...feature=related
Amazing.
24. Thanks fellas...I'll get some beers in.
