That's like those videos where the guy overdubs really bad playing over Jaco and Mark King footage. .....Only real.
He has shagged a lot of women, to be fair. They're obviously not interested in his playing.
Just to illustrate your point. Although to be fair, it is just about the show... Still goddamn awful.
f*** me!
-
As much as I'm not really a fan of hers(although her solo album is quite good), Tal Wilkenfeld doesn't belong in this thread,as she is a far better player than guys like Wentz,Guigsy et al.
Agree. She's far from awful.
-
I think it's funny, because at the same time as Tal was new to scene, Hadrien Feraud was just getting about. However, he was making a name for himself as the most bombastic and outrageously talented player since Wooten arrived in the mainstream, whereas Tal just seemed to be a rising star based on the connections she got from piping off Vinnie Colaiuta!
Not a fan, then?
Kinda young, kinda wow. Edit: Well, I had to make the obligatory comment after seeing the name Vinnie Colaiuta, but I've listened to this and quite enjoyed it: I haven't heard any of the hype, so perhaps that's what makes the difference.
Fantastic. And what a sound!
Agreed. Or that Alain Caron bloke.
Nah, Caron's got too many strings.
Just sorting out some new strings for my basses and thought i'd give DR Fatbeams a try. Turns out its cheaper to buy a 4 string set & a separate B string than it is to but the 5 string set 4 String B String 5 String set
Brilliant strings IMO.

I think, for me, an awful bassist would be one that overplayed and didn't do anything for the song.
Hard one innit. Sid wasn't your most gifted player. I think he did a decent job considering he was off his crust all the time and hadn't had more than a couple of months to learn from scratch. But he was a better choice for the Pistols than someone like Jaco Pastorius* would have been. It wasn't a technique based decision. Horses for courses. If the band's successful the bass player obviously works in the line up. Doesn't matter if they're any good or not. *Managed to get him in the thread
Wooten would have been good in the Pistols.
Me too. Perhaps we should define what would constitute a 'truly awful bassist' first? Even just playing a driving rhythm of root notes can work sometimes, so if that doesn't qualify as 'truly awful' then we'd have to be thinking about someone not being able to get the rhythm right, or the changes or, heaven forbid, even the right notes. Or maybe all three! Surely there's no one like that . . . . or no-one deserving of the 'bassist' label.
That was me when I was really pissed on a gig.
-
We've had overrated, but awful is a difficult one. I agree that in the studio it can be fixed or ghosted. But live? If a band becomes 'well known', the bass player should have done enough gigs to play to a decent standard. If we're talking 'annoying', that cheese farmer from Blur when he appeared on Jools Holland once, playing a double bass and trying to look cool by smoking a fag.

Scott Thunes with Zappa 1988 - I love this!

Clever dude. Great band. -
Sonic blue is the coolest colour ever. Matching headstock? I'm liking it.
-
David Goo - Wickid bassist whoever he is!
Pete Academy replied to xilddx's topic in General Discussion
Not something I'd usually listen to, but the bassist is holding it together really well. Some clever stuff in there. -
I'm sure I spotted Snickers and Fumpsy on that clip. Wasn't that filmed in the Basschat Arms last night?
-
Alex Al should have played the Michael Jackson gig. Great player.

My first time to this topic. I was intrigued by the 'Musical Slap' thread, and decided to recommend this tune. A great track. I can ony find it on Spotify (YouTube yields only live versions, unless I've only had a 'man look'). Typical Marcus. I would suggest you play the main riff totally thumbed. It will improve your groove immensely. Trust me.

Apart from hearing Stan's School Days album and Mahavishnu's Birds Of Fire, buying the AWB's white album and EWF's That's The Way Of The World.

Funkin' For Jamaica...very different...

Love it. Brilliant. -
And Janek is completely mad Apparently he was fine before he discovered Basschat.
I like her voice but I can't stand that song.
I don't think he gets mine or Doddy's posts. Testing, testing...

I think Bilbo's post is a brave one, and will inevitably bring out the 'you're a snob' comments. I've been playing and gigging for over 35 years. I've done hundreds of gigs and put in hundreds of hours of playing and practice. OK, so I'm not a pro player, but I value my ability and time spent to get to where I am. Should I tolerate bad players? I've paid my dues. I've seen enough mediocre bands get away with murder, take the money, and run. Would it be tolerated in other trades?

It's a 600. I know they've moved factories from UK to US because of problems.
-
I might be taking in a Trace Elliot AH amp, 12 band graphic. Not sure at the moment if it's a 600w or 1000w, but it's a new series one. Anyone got one? I've heard there have been reliability issues.
It has been shelved due to artistic differences between band and film company. In other words, the usual sh*t...
Sorry to disappoint you, Bilbo. I'll issue a refund on your copy straight away.
