He didn't play bass on the album, but still,it must give it some funk credence. I like how he basically f***ed up the slapping and decided to call it polyrhythmic, even though it wasn't except for the odd triplet.
I love the 'polyrhythmic' bit.
2.
Is this your alter-ego persona to Steely Dan man? Crazy, long haired funk rocker?!
He's ace. A true Youtube star.
3. And his chicken recipe is ace, too.
4.
Just been watching some of his videos Pete, he's a little special to say the least. A new happy chap
I love him!
5.
that is some very very depressing funk, i woudnt play that at a funeral
The guy's a legend.
6. We're all wrong. You need a Peavey, as this guy will now demonstrate: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LSeLqqGHRgA
7.
That was the first Reference series, the Reference 500/1000. I wanted to get one but couldn't even afford the deposit!!!
Ah yes, that was it. I actually borrowed it for a period of time.
8. Wearing these always helps: [url="http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=http://images.buycostumes.com/mgen/merchandiser/19467.jpg%3Fzm%3D250,250,1,0,0&imgrefurl=http://www.myhalloweencostumes.com/hats-wigs-masks.php%3Fc%3DACCESSORIES%2Band%2BMAKEUP%26sc%3DFinishing%2BTouches&usg=__WYwPLUT2WfeW4euMhdUmKLFb5f4=&h=250&w=250&sz=10&hl=en&start=266&tbnid=1WbmMSJINUolVM:&tbnh=169&tbnw=169&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dbootsy%27s%2Bboots%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DN%26biw%3D1280%26bih%3D865%26tbs%3Disch:10%2C8449&um=1&itbs=1&iact=rc&dur=473&ei=hG5VTKetD4v00gSC3v2AAw&page=12&ndsp=24&ved=1t:429,r:12,s:266&tx=62&ty=62&biw=1280&bih=865"]http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=http...280&bih=865
9. A bit of early Cameo will yield some good examples, too.
10.
A rather well known bass tutor once told me that I should always aim to play with musicians that are in some way better than me. That way, I will always be inspired to improve my own playing and musicianship. I've always thought that was rather sage advice. T
+1 My first proper gig was standing in for a great bass player at a jazz-fusion gig. The band were all amazing and I couldn't hold a candle to the bassist. I sh*t meself and overheard people comment I wasn't as good, but it was a huge learning experience.
11. I've always played active basses. When I bought my Jazz recently, I thought I would end up changing the electronics, but no way. Didn't need it. If it ain't broke...
12. A good Jazz usually does it all.
13. In the 80s I used a Dynacord 4 x 10" combo. The wood was stained red. It was monstrous and expensive, but a great piece of kit, with an amazing sound. The controls on that one look very similar. Anything nearing the name Dynacord = quality.
14.
I'm amazed this discussion is still going on, or indeed that there is any discussion at all... Someone with a receptive and enquiring mind, a decent ear and a good sense of time will be able to learn the nuances of playing funk in the time honoured way - as mentioned by others in this thread, by total immersion, i.e. listening hard and playing along to a great deal of the good stuff. "It's not rocket science, but you have to do it right", as someone once said. End of story. Jennifer
I think it was worth discussing or I wouldn't have posted. Totally agree with the highlighted part. You've just saved me shelling out for Bootsy's Funk University.
15. Whenever I slap I always try to make it musical these days. It's easy to get carried away sometimes, so I always try to slow it down a bit. Examples of musical slap can be found on the Bernard Wright 'Nard' album. A great CD, if you can find it.
16. I think you deserve a good drummer who keeps great time. Bad drummer, bad band. The drummer is the time keeper. Just my opinion, folks.
17. My definitive choice. 2.43. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2EvWkUuALGg The best slap solo ever.
18. Can syncopation be taught?
19. I'm way late to this thread. I bought a Steinberger L2 in 1983. When the Status basses came out I was gobsmacked, as IMO they were so much better sounding. Our guitar player (also a bassist) bought one in the 80s and it was stunning. Those Mark King basses look stunning.
20.
this has always been my favourite and leaves me in awe every single time! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TVl39LBZGMw
What an awesome sound.
21.
It's in your boots, your undies and behind your ears. It's there or it's not.
Great post.
22. There has been loads.
23.
Why is it whenever you look on youtube at a trade show or bass gathering ever one is a slap monster.
True.
24. Tony's quadruple thumb technique makes Mark King's look like
