3.
And are we still on this subject..? Both are old hat..find a new hero....or don't.
Sorry, but wasn't impressed with this.
 4.
Alex from Bass Gallery. It's not fretless, it's a GB Spitfire with original preamp in there. Just like Mark Kings pair of Spitfires... but that's a completely different story.
Sorry to diss this, but it sounds too fast and rushed. Great playing but the groove is lost.
 5. I remember a conversation when I was about 18 (1978) with a lad about who was the best bass player in the world. I said Stanley Clarke and he said Geezer Butler. This thread brings back a sense of that moment. Absolutely pointless, but quite fun putting your argument forward. That's why it's ran to so may pages.
 6. I think if anyone doubts MK's ability, they should really have a listen to the very first album, which is funk fusion. I still think it's very impressive. In Flea's corner, this track from the Freakey Styley album shows his amazing sense of groove using the barest of notes. 7.
Depending on how my job hunting prospects go, I'll either see you in London (August) or Gateshead (September)
See you there, Seb.
 8. Basically Ibanez. Good purchasing.
 9. I can't believe this thread has run to 8 pages!!!
 10. An absolutely stunning bass, by the way.
 11. Good purchasing, Rich. We sold ours straight away. Beautiful bass. Has more of that vintage sound IMO.
 12.
Mark King does get a lot of stick, but then when you're that good it is to be expected, there is always someone waiting to rain on the parade!
Er...anyone mention Victor? Probably the world's greatest, and boy does he get some stick on here.
 13. If you want to compare these guys in a funk context, Flea wins hands down. It's obvious he has a grasp of what the genre is all about. King came from the jazz/fusion side of things, hence the compositions on their early albums. Mister Pink is a masterclass in slap bass. I'm sure MK can do the dirty funk thing if he needs to. Level 42 were a jazz-funk outfit that saw a market grow from that genre. They are both great players, who defined bass playing during their respective decades.
 14.
Livin It Up is mighty funky.
And so is Aeroplane.
 15.
This is absolutely true. If you listen to the bass parts he played on "If I Was" with Midge Ure live at the Prince's Trust in the 80's, it is without a doubt one of the grooviest basslines of all time.
Livin It Up is mighty funky.
 16.
Hmmm tempted to join you Nig, not least because I know a couple of the players. What's the date...?
It's Sunday 22 August, Jake. I think Bryan's drumming.
 17. I was looking at the new TC rig the other day and thought, if you'd told someone ten years ago that this setup would rival much bigger rigs, they would laugh at you. My Markbass LMK and 2 x New Yorker 4 x 6" cabs sounds awesome. Big sound, no backache...that's what you pay for.
 18.
See if you can spot what this track is sampled from?:
19. These two players are both great, and I'm a big fan of both. Mark King was a much bigger part of my musical career, as I was caught up in the slap hysteria that followed his Tube appearance. He is an immensely talented player, and influenced an entire generation. But so did Flea. It's an age thing. So I officially call this a draw. Besides, I know that if Mark read this thread he would piss himself. And so would Flea. And Bootsy is the King of Funk.
 20. This track http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JY_0QReTPkc sampled Black Cow by Steely Dan http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_pJ2iw9xieo
 21. Say No Go by De La Soul http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=08X5CVfL0bk sampled I Can't Go For That by Hall and Oates http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yTKS3aP5eAg
 22.
I'll be at the Jazz Café gig in August, anyone else coming?
I'll be there.
 23. It may be because you are so used to the smaller cabs and the 4 x 10" gave you a bigger sound?
 24.
Did you enjoy them,then?
Leek has this effect on people.
 25.
obviously not spotted by myself, but shows a few daft punk tracks in sampled and original form:
Great post.
