Probably the coolest bass I have ever seen.

Sorry folks, I'm on a roll again. And apologies if this has been done before. A DJ friend was recently impressed when I told him the slap bass lick in Basement Jaxx's 'Red Alert' was taken from an old funk track by Locksmith called 'Far Beyond'. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aj5QrjqHIrU Apart from the obvious songs, does anyone know of any other sampled bass bits? I'm sure there are thousands.
I've had this with my Dad's LM2 before. I think it's something to do with the amp protecting itself from a surge of power to the input. It trips out, you turn it off and back on and it's fine again. Try turning the input down and the output up a little bit. I was worried the first time it happened to me as I thought I was gonna have to fork out to get my Dad's amp repaired but after reporting it back to him he said it had happened to him a few times too!
Thanks, Higgie, will do.

Jeez...and somebody said my 'Musical Genius' thread was pointless.
try a new power supply/plug socket..
At the gig the other night I was plugged into the venue's multi-socket, not mine, and also used a brand new power supply for the tuner.

I'm having a problem with my Markbass LMK amp. A couple of months ago, as I went to tune up with my Boss TU-2 tuner, my amp tripped out. When I switched it back on it worked perfectly the rest of the set. I decided to try it at another gig without the tuner. Worked perfectly all night. I thought it might be the tuner or the power supply, so I sold the TU-2 and bought a Korg Pitch Black. I used the tuner without a power supply and the amp worked perfectly. At last Friday's gig, I used a power supply for the Korg. About half way through the gig, I went to tune up and again the amp tripped out. Switched it on and off again, and it worked perfectly for the rest of the night. The common denominator seems to be the tuner and power supply to it. Anyone know why this might be happening?
if advised at all I suspect your customer had a bit of buyer's remorse and pinned it on their tutor
Maybe. You know what they say...the customer is always trite.
Sadly, Pete, that is how many salesmen are, especially in glossy retail where the staff whiz about from shop to shop and it's assumed to be target driven. I think bringing a guitar teacher in is a fine idea. You should recommend it. You can then get a good reputation with that teacher and they can advise their pupils to seek you out. "oh suits you sir"
Hmm...I see your point. However, to most customers their teacher is God, and in some cases don't always know what they are on about. For instance, I sold an Epiphone guitar worth over £500 to someone. He showed it to his guitar teacher, who pointed out the minutest fretbuzz, and said the guitar should be returned for a refund. Despite my reassurance that the guitar was fine, the customer wasn't convinced because the teacher had insisted. In the end we had no choice but to refund the money. I later asked the teacher, who was well known to us, to explain his actions. He denied saying anything to his pupil. This points to the OP as the girl and her mother probably being ill-advised.
Did you offer to correct her about her misconception about bass Vs 'normal' guitar, or teach her how to set up the PA? if not then I can't see how you feel it's justified to mock her ignorance. I'll admit I don't know how to set up a PA system, although I might be able to work it out, but i wouldn't feel that that makes me a worse person/bassist, i don't see what the big deal is.
There are some people that won't listen to what you tell them. My biggest bugbear with some customers is that they don't believe what you tell them because you are a salesman, and the salesman's priority is to take your money. I have had many that say they will have to come back with their guitar teacher or ask their teacher's advice before buying.

I've always boosted my mids to the max. It's the way to cut throught the mix. I know someone who sets his graphic EQ in a smile with mids totally cut. No definition whatsoever. If you want to hear the notes, the mids are essential.

I tried the new Ashdown Spyder 550 amp today and was mightily impressed. It was designed to purposely sound different from the ABM range. It has more in common with cleaner digital amps. In fact, I compared to to the TC 450 head and honestly thought it sounded better. I used my 79 Jazz, and the Spyder brought out the true sound of the instrument - super clean but not harsh highs. Punchy mids and lows. The TC sounded more 'processed' in comparison. Tons of headroom in the Spyder and really effective tone controls. It was easy to get a sound with the minimum of faffing about. Highly recommended.

Here's MK slapping furiously on a rock n roll classic with Paul McCartney at the Prince's Trust concert in 1986. Wonder why he's been taken out of the mix? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8nIcLxuk8A4&NR=1
Not that he'd feel anything! I used to use those old "Funkmaster" 30-90 strings. Far too light for someone like me with big, strong hands. No tone whatsoever... I kinda jumped in at the deep end - learning slap via my (then) obsession with Mark King. It's probably why I ended up with a Status.... Hours and hours of hard practice over months and months. Oddly, I can't remember being crap at it! Not that I wasn't crap of course, I just don't recall that particular period! Then I went down to something called the "Bass Weekend" in autumn 1987. Every trade stand (and especially the Goodfellow one) sounded like a typing pool!!! Rapid "machine-gun" triplets from half a dozen bassists at the same time.... It kinda put me off the style for a long time. Now, when I use it, I try to be much more tasteful in my approach. A bit like a good ribeye steak, when its overdone, it's horrible!
Funkmasters. Anyone still use them?
I can do a little bit and I pop pops in when apropriate. I'll get a lesson or two sometime. ( However, I depped for a band a couple of times a few months ago. They sent me the set list - all Free, Bad co, Santana, 2 sets full of dad rock. No problem. Then they sent me a CD of the band playing it. The bass player was slapping on everything; Yup, everything. Samba pa ti with slap, Cocaine with slap, Sex on fire with slap, All Right Now with slap ... I had to listen through again to check but, yup, he slapped something of every single track. The lad who runs the band (18) thought he was the best bass player in the whole wide world and didn't understand why I didn't also slap all the way through everything as well .... Says a lot I think.
That lad should have been put in the stocks and pelted with Mark King's old strings. Unforgiveable!
I seem to remember something on here a while ago about an audition not going too well when they slapped all the way through House of the Rising Sun
Yep, that's absolutely true. Back in the days of Mark King madness.
