1. This is how I like my slap bass. Notice how different it is to the Mark King style? And what a great sound...the Fender Jazz rules. I always associate the great Mark Adams with Slave, though.
2. I had one in the 80s but it was a different model.
3. http://www.classicacafe.com/Content/1979_K...r_DMZ_4000_.asp Kramer DMZ4000. Anyone know what these are worth?
4. Regardless of genre, maybe the true innovators? We haven't really touched on the rock/metal/thrash/alternative/punk world.
5.
I'm being willfully pedantic here, but let's all enjoy the word 'Genii'! I would say that there are probably more in the classical world who fall into this category than most other genres.
TBH I laboured over the term before posting. I just wondered how you would define the term in a musician's sense. A genius still has to work damned hard to get that status.
6. McCartney deserves the title IMO.
7.
Players who had the vision to totally redefine an instrument like JP and Jimi Hendrix
Hendrix absolutely.
8. Many will disagree, but in the bass category I think Victor is in there.
9.
All of the members of Queen, for example, not only being musically multi-instrumental and talented all penned at least one Number One hit each and more. I feel that recognition is enough to put them in such a category!
Musical genius? Not sure. Freddie Mercury, maybe.
10. There are people that are obviously very musically gifted. A friend of mine, who has co-written three songs on the new Robbie CD, including the new single, can play many instruments extremely proficiently. We hear of people like Victor Wooten, who claims to have started to learn bass at 3 years old. But who would you consider is a musical genius? The names Prince and Stevie Wonder are often mentioned, and I think I would agree. And how would you define musical genius?
11. When we used to stock Planet Waves, we had a fair few returned faulty. We've switched to good old Whirlwind and had virtually no returns.
12.
I don't think it's really worth arguing over. Faithless would rather play jazz than pop. Great. I'm sure there are people on here who will only play in original projects. It's really the same thing, and it all comes down to what you want out of it. I'm doing a straight up jazz gig on upright tonight, but tomorrow I'm playing funk and disco on electric, and midweek I'm playing with an acoustic singer/songwriter. That's the kind of thing I like doing. Although I really can't stand Trad Jazz.....
Can you tab me that bass part to?... On seconds thoughts, forget it.
13. I found out recently that, until he gets another gig, James Lomenzo has been selling furniture in a friend's shop.
14. I've nothing against the OP, but to turn down playing with a 'jazz giant' would only happen if I had a shitload of money to spare.
15. Look at drummer Ricky Lawson. He was on the ground-breaking Yellowjackets first fusion album. He has toured with Michael Jackson and Steely Dan, to name a couple. But it's his groove that's of foremost importance and gets him the high-profile gigs. Same with Omar Hakim. It's no different with bass players.
16. There was once a time when the likes of Weather Report and Return To Forever played arena-style gigs.
17. Darryl Jones is a first-rate jazzer, but would you turn down Sting and The Rolling Stones, probably two of the best gigs in the world? I think not.
18. I urge you to buy this! Roscoes are the best basses on the planet. This is a gorgeous example.
19. Personally, I'm not a huge jazz fan, but add some funk to it and I love it.
20. Imagine if they had a love child? F*** me!
21. I'm sure players like Omar Hakim and Darryl Jones enjoy their nights off down at the Baked Potato.
22.
Exactly - I do top pro shows, I'm on the BBC's Strictly tour at the moment, but I still do little function jobs & amateur shows, etc. Paid work is paid work, no matter how prestigious or otherwise.
Nice gig, Rich.
23. Jazz gigs won't pay. These guys have to eat.
24. Big fan of both...God bless 'em.
25.
Cue the Saturday Afternoon Slap Monster...King created that one. And so did Flea.
And nowadays we have the SADTM...Saturday Afternoon Double-Thumb Monster.
