1.
Yeah he's playing fast but watch his left hand - can you hear any of those notes he's popping? Neither can I. He might have been the most high-profile Brit to slap a bass and that's why he's got some fans amongst the older generation on here, but he's also the slapper most responsible (and rightly so) for the technique being so universally condemned ever since. That's true, but I suppose you have to like fusion. It all sounds a bit Jobfinder to me.
Cue the Saturday Afternoon Slap Monster...King created that one. And so did Flea.
2.
Needs more chorus. Nah honestly Mark King or not, that sounds like sh*t(*). Even Jools Holland looks bored. * Edit: Since I've fallen out with people for statements like that in the past: If you heard a drum solo of similar rhythmic content, would you be impressed?
It was impressive in 1985. Trust me, you had to be there.
3. If you haven't already seen this, take a look a this clip from The Tube in 1985. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6KWd-Qdb2Vc This would now be dismissed as fretw***ing, but at the time we hadn't seen anything like this before. It was pretty jawdropping, in the same way as Van Halen's Eruption was. King single-handedly re-invented the style from the thumb-heavy Larry Graham's 'thump and pop' to a drummer's rudimentary interpretation. Knock him as you may, but he really was an innovator.
4. Love it.
5. Fender seem to have got it right with the CV series. Harks back to the original Squier days. Surprised Dawsons wouldn't budge on price. However, Fender have had recent price increases, and I can honestly say they are trying to curb the silly pricing going on around the internet. Our sales have fallen because of this.
6. I think they're already on our website.
7. And Flea because of this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p3_I0W99nvw
8. Mark King because of this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qXZoowWAPZA
9.
This? When I started practicing with my band some 6 months ago, I started off with my Shuttle volume cranked up to 3/4. And still found myself struggling to be heard. Now, after reading a bit more here about eq's, I'm now happily breaking through the mix with the volume now less than 1/2. So I would suggest that the difference at the gig was the better eq setup on your Hartke amp - you said you DI'd post eq? Mark
The key to being heard onstage is EQ.
10.
im not even joking the 4x10cm aluminium speakers or whatever they are sizewise deliver more bass than you imagine they ever could. its got more bass coming out of it than any 1x10" practice amp ive ever heard, its stereo you see (i think thats what makes the difference) and that its digital. its always made me want to play through one of those phil jones's briefcases
Yep...great little amp.
11. I'm signing up...NOW!
12. I think this is a really difficult and subjective one to nail, as feel and groove are closely linked. If I were to choose someone who possessed the ultimate in feel, I would have to agree with Bubinga and go for Me'Shell. Richard Bona would be a close second. Good thread.
13. The first run are Limited Edition. Production models coming soon.
14. You can have my Stingray for £700.
15.
I cant understand why this hasn't sold yet (other than why i haven't brought it;-)
Neither do I, Dave. I think everyone's a bit skint, maybe?
16. Still for sale. Needs a good home. £700.
17. He's probably got the front pickup down a bit for the intro, and then pulls both pickups full on for the slap sound. Great thing about Jazz basses.
18. Used to have this concert on VHS. Love it.
19. Bollocks!!!
20.
Thank you Gentlemen for your kind remarks, it may be a while if I have the same luck again. And my nickname is Lucky and has been since I was a young boy, now I'm almost 43. I hope that it does not turn out to be stolen, sorry to hear about your Tobias bass.
I got it back.
21.
Here are some pictures that I took with my phone.
Yep, the real deal. Wonder how much CC took it in for? I would still be a little wary of it being stolen, though.
22.
I prefer Mark King becuase I think the sound and feel to his stuff is polished. Thats not to say I dont like Flea as well.
Slappers, the pair of 'em.
23.
A very lucky bast**d, I'm still grinning now.
You should have haggled a bit more.
24. When I lost my USA Tobias Classic 5, I found it in my local CC. They claimed they'd sold it for £80, as they didn't know what it was worth.
25. Cash Converters...don't you just love 'em?
