1. The guitars aren't cheap either. And it's not the bass model, it's the guitar model that I own two examples of. If you haven't already, you should drop by the JapCrap thread.
 2.
so the bass is made after 87
Meaning it was made around two years after it was phased out of the catalogue. Clever bass.
If i remember correct, this basses were a mixture of mexican parts assembled in usa, they say, so they could sell as MIA.
The real story is more Fender cost-cutting, and promoting the Elites as the top of the range. The theory was the one-piece plate, three-bolt bridge, fewer screws, etc, would reduce costs. Reality was Fender used poor quality plastics and/or inaccurate machining, and ended up splitting loads of the plates, so ditched the concept. The Elites also didn't hang around for long, so Fender went back to what it knew best, the tried and tested Precision and Jazz designs.
 3. Aesthetically, the guitars appear better balanced. But these are works of art in wood. You really have to handle one to realise just how beautifully made a Daion is.
 4. One label. One decal. So, I guess everyone is wrong. But not as wrong as that "Hofner"!

 7.
Actually, if you grab the headstock image and take a look at it in photoshop ... the logo itself has an interesting pattern around it that I wouldn't have expected to see there.
You mean the thin finish, given the cost cutting at Fender? The best work was being reserved for the Elite models, and these standard models suffered by comparison. You'll see examples with a metal control plate, you'll see examples with the 3D cast tuners, it was all a case of use whatever was in stock when putting this version of the Jazz together.
 8.
[S]hould a Fender of that age have 3 screw-hole, or 5?
The whole ethos at the time was cost-cutting, which was why one-piece plate and fewer screws. Problem with the Jazz was that there were three different versions while Fender sorted out production. And then it was gone. To the OP, looks exactly like the one I bought early '85.
 9. Sure the Yamahas and Vintage that have been mentioned are all fine instruments, but the best thing to do is get a fretless version of your favourite of the basses you already own, or something very similar.
 10.
[T]hose holes in the back of the body aren't horizontal.
Usually inline on Fenders, but raked on other designs, so that wouldn't overly concern me.
 11.
I'm interested.
Max, it's £150 worth of bass.

 14.
God knows what the rules are in America . But I know for talk sake my house which is Northern Ireland Housing Executive. ... So going on the knowledge of how it works with our house I don't see it as inconceivable the same could apply elsewhere in the world.
Except, what you're describing is a contractual arrangement, where clauses in the lease agreement, or in a subsidiary document referred to in that agreement, set out operational procedures to be followed on termination. There will also be a statement saying that the contract does not exclude the operation of the general law in relation to Crown reservation, "antiquities", "treasure trove", and high-value items, and how such should be treated in other situations, such as abandonment.
 15. Action is a bit tall. And didn't start life fretless. It's a nice curio, but if it plays like any of the other 60s Japanese guitars/bases I've tried, it'll be something of a chore, and sound like mush when you do.
 16. An easy £300 to £400 if they'd been prepared to post. Someone got a bargain.
 17. That DR is a brand new, unused, LoRider .125, if that helps.
 18. Yea, checking out the fit and feel of the build quality first, then playing the instrument acoustically (after making sure it's in tune) is where I usually start. Thereafter, I'd get plugged in to the setup that's closest to what I own and set any EQ flat (as others have suggested). As for what I play, that's usually a series of figures that I'd use when practising, played in every position up and down the neck. I find playing figures I know back to front more revealing than playing every note along the length of a neck, string by string. If the purchase is time sensitive/inexpensive, then I might not have/take the opportunity to go the extra yardage, but, assuming I can/do, then I'd go back another day, with my own strap and a fresh set of strings of my choice, and get the bass restrung, setup tweaked, and try it out again, through the same setup as previously. Again, I'd play the same series of figures, before playing a few lines.
 19. My vote goes for BFD Eco. Although personally I use BFD2 with various of the optional Yamaha kits, Eco is what I provided to the other musicians I'm working with. Tried the various Toontrack and FXpansion, as well as XLN Audio and Steinberg, packages side by side, and just thought BFD sounded better.
 20. Did you take a look at the Quiklok stands? Much better than the ones wrapped in foam. Come with a set of casters, although this one is just sat directly on the floor.
 21. Korg DT7 guitar/bass chromatic digital tuner, with Buzz Feiten function. Complete with original box and owner's manual. Full working order. One missing rubber "foot". £25, including postage within mainland Great Britain.
 22.
Now why on Earth would anyone want to do that?
See post 11.
