The theory was the one-piece plate, three-bolt bridge, fewer screws, etc, would reduce costs. Reality was Fender used poor quality plastics and/or inaccurate machining, and ended up splitting loads of the plates, so ditched the concept. The Elites also didn't hang around for long, so Fender went back to what it knew best, the tried and tested Precision and Jazz designs.

Aesthetically, the guitars appear better balanced. But these are works of art in wood. You really have to handle one to realise just how beautifully made a Daion is.

One label. One decal. So, I guess everyone is wrong. But not as wrong as that "Hofner"!

The best work was being reserved for the Elite models, and these standard models suffered by comparison. You'll see examples with a metal control plate, you'll see examples with the 3D cast tuners, it was all a case of use whatever was in stock when putting this version of the Jazz together.

Problem with the Jazz was that there were three different versions while Fender sorted out production. And then it was gone. To the OP, looks exactly like the one I bought early '85.

Sure the Yamahas and Vintage that have been mentioned are all fine instruments, but the best thing to do is get a fretless version of your favourite of the basses you already own, or something very similar.

Action is a bit tall. And didn't start life fretless. It's a nice curio, but if it plays like any of the other 60s Japanese guitars/bases I've tried, it'll be something of a chore, and sound like mush when you do.

Yea, checking out the fit and feel of the build quality first, then playing the instrument acoustically (after making sure it's in tune) is where I usually start. Thereafter, I'd get plugged in to the setup that's closest to what I own and set any EQ flat (as others have suggested). As for what I play, that's usually a series of figures that I'd use when practising, played in every position up and down the neck. I find playing figures I know back to front more revealing than playing every note along the length of a neck, string by string. If the purchase is time sensitive/inexpensive, then I might not have/take the opportunity to go the extra yardage, but, assuming I can/do, then I'd go back another day, with my own strap and a fresh set of strings of my choice, and get the bass restrung, setup tweaked, and try it out again, through the same setup as previously. Again, I'd play the same series of figures, before playing a few lines.

My vote goes for BFD Eco. Although personally I use BFD2 with various of the optional Yamaha kits, Eco is what I provided to the other musicians I'm working with. Tried the various Toontrack and FXpansion, as well as XLN Audio and Steinberg, packages side by side, and just thought BFD sounded better.

Did you take a look at the Quiklok stands? Much better than the ones wrapped in foam. Come with a set of casters, although this one is just sat directly on the floor.

What about a 1982 Yamaha SG, stripped back to the bare wood?
