...so far there are way more people coming from over the Border (and many from way down south) than guys from Scotland...
Might be because some of us Scots have had the advantage of having been to Moffat before, and already know that there's not a lot of reason to go back. -
I wonder why he doesn't just go neck thru if it's that big a deal to him.
The first bass Sheehan and Yamaha worked on was based on the BB3000 model (think pink), which is neck-thru, so he obviously has looked into that design, and discounted it. After the BB3000, Sheehan moved on to using an RBX model (think blue), which is bolt-on, and Yamaha used that as the template for the Attitude model.
Still an unjustifiable price tag (along with many other mass produced instruments I guess).
Guess that all depends on what you mean by "mass produced instrument". The bass Sheehan is playing (will play) will be built by the Yamaha Music Craft workshop, which is where Yamaha builds its handcrafted instruments. Now, unless you're prepared to call the likes of Alembic, Sadowsky and Wal mass producers, because Yamaha uses production lines to build the majority of its other models, to suggest its hand-built models are "mass produced" and not "handcrafted" is a comment simply without merit.
The basses look quite generic early 90s Japanese - very Ibby Soundgear/Tune Bass Maniac-esque.
Not even taken the time to look at the site, but seem to remember the designs were ripoffs of the Yamaha TRB (with a nod to Ken Smith) and RBX (with a nod to Guild's Pilot).

A Heartfield Prophecy passed through my hands early 90s. Construction was okay, but sound was terrible. From what I remember, Fender was never involved in the design or production, just bought the rights, imported the range, and sold it as a Fender "brand".
Oh well, in-line with Yamaha's new pricing ideology...I can't afford it: http://www.dv247.com/guitars/yamaha-attitu...aby-blue--82806
Bit unfair. UK pricing has little to do with Yamaha. As it always has, Yamaha sets the price of its products in Japan, and the vagaries of currency conversion and purchase taxes set the local prices, outside of Japan. In 2010, on average, £1 bought Y130. In 2007, on average, £1 bought Y240. You've around 50% of the purchasing power you had a few years ago. Roll UK purchase tax increases into that equation and we're talking less than 50%. Walk into a music store in Tokyo, and Yamaha's new product ranges are as competitively priced as these always have been. Yamaha isn't attempting to reposition its product ranges, it's just that life in the UK has got a lot more expensive if you're looking to purchase imports.
I tune mine standard B-E-A-D-G the reason being that I started playing 5 string for the low B.
What makes you think that B to G is standard? Originally 5-strings were always tuned E to C, it was only when some manufacturers suggested that an alternative B to G tuning was possible that players adopted it.

A useless lump of wood to my eye. And design/built by someone who doesn't have a full palette of fretting techniques.
Edit: Headstock of much cheaper Hondo II Professional sold a few days ago actually says "Professional" on it. ... The shaping on the heel of the neck also isn't particularly "Matsumoku" to my eye. -
Plenty of scope here - where do you want me to start? How about: there are at least two different basses in the photos. Hmm.
Yea, the top grain in the first and second photos is totally different. -
[I]m looking to enter the world of fretless in the near future ... Any advise?
Asking that question you'll get every make and model under the sun suggested. But, here's a thought, have you considered buying a fretless version of your favourite fretted bass? Personally, always found that to be a good, if not the best, course of action.

If you're wanting a "like for like" valuation for insurance purposes then an authorised reseller will be able to provide this, based on manufacturer's recommended retail price. Assuming you're looking for the certainty of a written "report", you should be able to find a reseller to do that, but most will charge a nominal fee for this (expect to pay between £10 and £30 for the luxury of the reseller writing down the manufacturer's RRP). If you're unlucky enough to own a vintage instrument, and want to maintain insurance cover, then you'll find that your insurer may insist on having as many as three specialist retailers or dealers (although auction houses are also an option) value the instrument in question. Some insurers will accept valuation reports where the specialist has based an assessment on photographs; some, however, will insist on the instrument actually being seen by the specialist making the valuation. Typically, reputable specialists retailers or dealers will charge for preparing a report (in today's market that can easily be £100 plus VAT). Keeping the instrument insured with the same insurer can cut down on effort, but expect to have to provide updated specialist reports every three to five years (depending on the insurer's procedures). Best practice is to photograph the instrument once a year, and submit such evidence to your insurer when any renewal is made. If you switch insurer you'll almost certainly be asked to submit an at-date valuation report. Some things you can't rely on are concluded open market sales or recent auction prices, as the insurer will argue that any assessment of value is strictly limit to the instrument inspected, and reported, so you have to be vigilant about maintaining up to date information.
I ask because I've heard it said but really never quite known - and is it a bad thing: for example: are low output p'ups less suited to gigging?
Low-impediance low-output pickups, Rick Turner, Alembic. Really don't think there's anything else needs said. But, will just add, when you boil everything right down to the very basics, Turner's main reason for designing the original low-output pickups was to increase the bandwidth of the output signal, to facilitate an expanded, and enhanced, aural spectrum, which could be shaped with more precision.

Ibanez Affirma AFR - (withdrawn until further notice)
noelk27 replied to Spoombung's topic in Basses For Sale
It has a very tight grain like mahogany but has some of the broader patterns seen in Walnut... so perhaps it is Saman?
Ibanez did use saman for various premium models in the 90s . In addition to the AFR the high-end Soundgear models (SR5000 and SR5005 rings a bell) were manufactured using saman sourced from Philippines. -
I'm sure it is a type of walnut but iirc the wood was actually saman (spelling may not be spot on). I've still got an old USA Bass Guitar magazine with the original review somewhere!
Saman is usually categorised as a type of mahogany, sourced mostly from South American and the Malay Peninsula, musch coming from Philippines. The AFR was initially available in saman, or walnut, or maple. -
