1. I don't care what it is, just PLEASE don't make me listen to any more f***ing Morcheeba.
2.
Great instruments... a friend of mine teaches at clinics around Europe.
Who's that then?
3.
SANDBERG!! Wierd slightly rounded bridge, slight beak to the headstock, angled retainer....
Just Googled a few Sandberg J style basses & I think you may well be right, the headstock certainly looks the same.
4. You are not alone..... I bought a 12 string Grand Stick towards the end of last year after selling my 10 string years ago & regretting it. I've recently had lots of problems with damaged ligaments in my right hand though so I've hardly played it since I got it. There's a Basschat Stick thread here if you're interested: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/164195-the-stick-thread/
5.
I don't know, but there are two more videos from their appearance in Later with Jools Holland on Youtube (Rome Wasn't Built in One Day and Be Yourself) which feature the bass more prominently.
Why didn't you post one of those then? OK, watched the other two clips & still can't get a decent look at the bass, other than it seems to have quite a pronounced hook shape on the headstock - it's some kind of generic Super Jazz of which there are hundreds, if not thousands, of different types.
6. Yes - a couple of Rickenbacker 4001's. The first "Pro" basses I ever owned - I loved the look of them so much & all my then bass heroes played them. I was gutted when I actually owned a couple & found out I just didn't like them. My Stingray 5 was also a massive disappointment - I'd heard so many people raving about how great they were both sound & quality-wise, yet personally I found it to be sadly lacking in both these areas.
7.
Manfred Mann and bass player Mark Griffiths have actually patented a similar concept, but I don't think it ever made it into production instruments: http://www.sidasante...rkcv/stereo.htm http://www.platform-...owntoearth.html
This sounds very similar to Steve Ripleys stereo guitar system that Kramer used in the mid 80s: http://www.vintagekramer.com/ripley.htm
8. I saw Butcher Babies supporting Anthrax a couple of years ago - they were pretty good.
9.
Someone else pointed me in the direction of an Apogee Jam circa £70 from GAK
Do you think you might want to use external mics for recording at some point? If there's any possibility you will then you really are better off looking at something like the Focusrite Scarlett rather than something like the Apogee Jam or the iRig.
10. Absolutely not. (Never go into music shops anyway as I can pretty much guarantee they won't have anything of any interest to me).
11. I've got a mic input on my old Macbook that allows me to plug a guitar or bass straight in. Apparently you shouldn't do this because of latency issues but I've never had a problem (not really into home recording anyway so I'm not very fussy).
12. A Farewell to Kings/Hemispheres era is my favourite. Worst IMO is the horrendous "elastic bands on a shoe box" Wal years.
13. They are bound to think "What a complete waste of our time, if the distance is a problem why did you bother auditioning in the first place?". Surely you must have realised the distance would be a problem before you auditioned?
14. Watched a few of her other YouTube clips - what an amazing person!
15.
But could you play Stereophonics songs constantly without thinking "could we drop in a spot of Muse"?
The last thing I would want to do with any song I was playing would be "drop in a bit of Muse". Why would anybody want to spoil a nice simple but tasty meal by stirring dog sh*t into it?
16. Hedges used to use some unusual tunings with very low (for an acoustic guitar) bass notes, not uncommonly G below the low E.
17. Awesome bass! The Jeff Ament model is the best looking of the Hamer "A" style 12vers IMO as it doesn't have the fake sound hole. Always great to see a Hamer with boomers too! What scale is this BTW?
18.
What about all us prog fans without iPads
There's a rather fantastic vintage M400 on Ebay at the moment for a very reasonable £3000: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mellotron-M400-Vintage-Keyboard-Analogue-Classic-1980s-Legend-/281243606597?pt=UK_ I'm actually quite tempted to sell all my other music gear in order to buy it.
19.
i learn sonething everyday i never knew 70's fender jazz's had laquered fretboards...
Good God man, you didn't know 70's Fender jazz's had laquered fretboards, you've never seen an 8 string bass - do you live in a cave?
20. With the very occasional paid sessions I do I tend to charge a daily fee of £150.00 - the people I work for tend to be self funding singer/songwriter types so don't usually have huge recording budgets. I'm also usually pretty safe in the knowledge that whatever I play on isn't going to become some surprise global smash so I'm more than happy with a one-off fee. As somebody else has said, you can probably forget about getting points/royalties. If that's the sort of path you want to go down you'd better join the MU if you're not already a member & get their advice.
21.
And THAT's the 'instability' your family members are concerned about. Would they be so concerned if you were self-employed plumber? Probably not..
The big difference between a musician & a plumber though is that there will always be somebody that needs a plumber.
22. My new neighbours rutting like cattle. "Couldn't love you more" indeed....
Time generally makes us forget the less good bits.
If what I can remember are the good bits I must have had a really sh*t life so far....
24.
Good job. That's better than the demo videos.
Ooh ta very much! That's made my week!
25. I just recorded a quick demo of a few of the sounds from the mellotron app & shoved it on Soundcloud if anybody is interested: https://soundcloud.com/rhysparry/mellotron-app-strings-flute (Don't really do this recording/soundcloud thing as a rule so apologies if it's unlistenable or doesn't work properly - plays OK through my mac but my PC is struggling with it even though it's a tiny file)
