1. I go through phases with effects (see what I did there? ). I used to use quite a lot of them, then I went completely the other way & used none for years. Currently I have about six that I use quite often, and a couple that I'm going to get rid of because I can't stand them (octavers always sound sh*t to me, I've tried loads & hated them all). If you can afford not to get rid of them then just pack them away in case you ever decide to use them again - replacing a load of effects can be pretty expensive, especially if any of the ones you get rid of acquire "Classic" status after you've ditched them.

Slow?

Very slow yesterday, seems a bit better now though
3.
My first was Gillan with John McCoy on bass, Bernie Torme on guitar, Colin Towns, keys, and Mick Underwood on drums. Support were two bands called Quartz and White Spirit, the latter having a young Janick Gers (now Iron Maiden) on guitar.
Was that in the Top Rank on Queen Street? I was there too. I can't remember what my first ever gig was - It might have been Sutherland Brothers & Quiver, It might have been Sandy Denny (with bass legend Danny Thompson as support) or it may well have been Queen with Manfred Mann's Earth Band supporting. It could also have been Steeleye Span......it's all so very long ago. The first gig I ever went to on my own (without an elder sibling as chaperone) was Hawkwind on the Live '79 tour, closely followed two days later by Motorhead.
4.
if I look for local slags all I get is anthracite and fuzzy photos of men in moleskin pants...
.....Which is pretty much exactly what I was looking for.
5. Herbie & Chris have been playing in the band on the annual " Jeff Waynes War of the Worlds" tours for a quite few years now too - a very entertaining night out.
6. That clip, to me, is an A-Z of fretless clichés to be avoided at all costs. Not Pino himself really, but the whole host of imitators it spawned that couldn't play anything without loads of wildly exaggerated vibrato or bloody sliding harmonics. I've seriously fallen out of love with the whole fretless thing - it really makes me cringe.
7. Get in touch with these guys: http://www.macpahire.co.uk/
8. Awesome - Vinnys are superb basses, as are all Zons. Don't forget to put your new Vinny in the Zon Porn thread: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/54706-where-are-the-zons/
9. I'd put a plaster on it, but only while you are playing or it'll stay all soggy & won't heal up as quickly. Use it as an excuse to use your other fingers more too.

Spectors?!
A quick correction - TomRichards - the US basses come with the stunning Spector Hazlab preamp as standard NOT the Obp...
I think the US bolt-on models have the Aguilar preamp as standard.
11. A slight derail here, but apparently "Got The Time" is one of the tracks that "Curiosity", the NASA probe, is playing as it trundles around the surface of Mars doing it's stuff: http://www.planetrock.com/news/rock-news/anthrax-first-metal-on-mars/ Awesome.
12. So you were running the Barts with no preamp at all? I've been thinking of trying this with my fretless Zon.
13. I'm trying to find some local slags & all I keep getting are ads for bloody bass amps.
14.
Well, I play bass guitar, love Genesis, live near Basingstoke, and work in Southampton. Don't know what you mean by bass pedals though ?
How can you love Genesis & not know what bass pedals are?
15.
IIRC Pink Floyd had planned to record an album without any conventional instruments using recorded and pitch manipulated sounds on tape - it was abandoned as being to difficult and time-consuming to produce in the late 70s.
That would be the abandoned "Household Objects" project.
16. It's currently reserved for a potential buyer who contacted me via Gumtree (who funnily enough is also from Wigan, it's not you is it? If it is you I contacted you through Gumtree earlier today - sorry for the slow response).

Spectors?!

I have a Euro 5LX that I bought largely out of curiosity & it immediately become my number one bass - I absolutely love it. Everything about it is perfect for me; the string spacing, neck profile, body shape & sound couldn't be more suited to me if I'd had it specially built for me. I had tried a number of five string basses & had pretty much decided they weren't for me until I played the Spector, now I can't imagine playing anything else - my four string Zons haven't seen the light of day since I got it. I especially love the sound of the Tonepump circuit - it just sounds so natural. It records beautifully & to my ears really is the perfect blend of passive warmth & active clarity. The B string is the best I've ever heard too; beautifully balanced with the rest of the strings & with fantastic clarity & punch. Easily the best bass I've ever owned.
18. I've always just used my ear - no teachers, books, videos or anything else. Never had the spare money to spend on regular (or irregular) lessons, and as I'm now earning less than I was when I was 18 I probably never will have a lesson.
19. The amount of people who think they can sing but can't is astonishing. A few years ago I tried to start a band with a couple of other people & we advertised for a vocalist. We had quite a few replies, and every last one of them was bloody awful.
20.
If anything, I would encourage the reverse; for people to check items for sale before posting wanted ads.
This.
21. Try these guys: http://www.effectpowersupplies.com/power-supplies-8-c.asp
22. Very much depends on the bass - my Jaydee & Stingray were a nightmare for this, the necks needed adjusting all the time. My lovely old Atilla Balogh Odyssey bass however never needed adjusting in the 20 odd years I owned it.
23.
Bought 2 tickets to New York instead, I will get a yellow Ibanez one day.
Why not buy one over there?
