My Zon Legacy Elite fretless was astonishingly light, easily the lightest bass I've ever played. I never weighed it but it wasn't even close to 8lbs, & it wouldn't surprise me if it was under 7lbs.
Does anyone buy anything from record shops these days?
I do. I still buy music on CD. I don't buy much so if I can get it locally I will. I also tend to buy CDs at gigs if they are available. I have no interest in buying downloads or using streaming services.
We throw the crowd a curve ball after playing some sh*t rock covers by kicking in The Riverboat song Turns heads, does that number
Play some sh*t rock covers followed by a really sh*t rock cover - yeah, that's some curve ball. -
Nice bass Alembic1989. Wel worth the wait and worry. I've always had a thing for the USA Mockngbird as used by Neil Murray with Whitesnake. Great sounding bass and stunning looks. Do the Mockingbirds suffer from neckdive at all ? Dave
Not so I've noticed, no. There are certainly far worse basses out there for neck dive.
What are all the switches for on the Mockingbird. ? Dave
The switches are series/parallel for each pickup, phase switch that works when both pickups are selected & the one on it's own by the varitone is the on/off switch for the preamp/boost, which has it's own volume control.
I've got both Animal Logic records, I got them when I was about 17-18 and listened to them loads as I was mad about Stanley Clarke. Both records have some great songs, and 'there's a spy' is an absolute favourite of mine. The first record is the stronger of the two but really, both records could be condensed into one, retaining the bangers and dropping the dross. I agree about some of Holland's lyrics, they really are dire in places. Overall, I liked the style of the band for the most part. Stanley and Stewart cut some great tracks. If only they had got Joni Mitchell onboard, imagine that!
There are some good songs, "Spy" is good & I really like "Sunset gun" too. Nothing wrong with Stewart & Stanleys contributions to the album. Yeah, joni would have made it a very interesting project indeed!

I doubt if I'll be able to buy any gear ever again, just don't have the money since I had to retire on health grounds.

Could anyone help with a rough valuation? Mexican Fender Jazz
RhysP replied to T-Bay's topic in Bass Guitars
Personally there's no way I'd make a 200 mile round trip for something as easy to find as a Mexican Fender Jazz, especially if it's in a bit of a mess. -
Stanley, Stuart Copeland and AH almost formed a band 'Electric Rush Hour' but I don't think AH would commit and it morphed into 'Animal Logic' with Deborah Holland.
And what a massive disappointment that turned out to be. Some of the music was OK but Deborah Hollands lyrics were bloody terrible, some of the most banal garbage I've ever heard. It's a shame the project with Holdsworth never happened.
Hi guys, My first BC Rich..just arrived this afternoon..hope you like it. It was built in 1978, it's an Eagle bass, and fretless...looks like a keeper. "Golden Era" Rich's are very special instruments.

Lovely. That would look very nice next to my '79 Mockingbird.
Definitely worth waiting for....a 1978 BC Rich Eagle bass...fretless!
Ooh lovely! Pictures when you get a chance please. You could also post it in the "BC Rich Porn" thread if you like, it could do with some new additions: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/8544-bcrich-porn/
Looks: Have you seen the other threads where folk argue over the merits of "Candy Apple Red" or "Lake Placid Blue"? (They then pooh-pooh the effect if tonewood, but that's another can of worms) Jaco, Willis and Lawson? Phuur! What do they know? We're MEN here! We're tough. We know what we're doing!
To me colour choice is important. There are colours that I just don't like & wouldn't own a bass or guitar in those colours. However, if I was buying a fretless (unlikely as I've come to loathe fretless bass with a passion over the years) I wouldn't care less if it had lines or not if I liked the bass. I don't get this whole "unlined is cooler" thing at all. Do people honestly think people will see them playing an unlined fretless & think "wow, that's really cool, what a badass player"?

You might like Tony Levin's "Stick Men" side project, also Gavin Harrison & O5ric. http://youtube.com/watch?v=cWrPNY-XgLY http://youtube.com/watch?v=CgRnmSwJZM8
IIRC the Violent Femmes use the massive-bodied Earthwood bass which has a unique sound all of it's own and not something I would like to have to try to replicate with a standard acoustic bass guitar no matter what type of pickup and amplification.
That's right, he uses an Earthwood which is nothing like your typical acoustic bass guitar.

...and now for something completely different...

So it takes sixteen guitarists to sound like one keyboard player with a £50 Casio. -
I got this a few weeks back, such a good quality guitar for not much dosh. I wonder how much better the U.S. built versions are. Anyway, it's great, plenty of tonal options, comfortable to play and to me, a pleasing design.
I really like the look of these, really nice guitar.

There's a lot of snobbish crap talked about lined fretless basses. I've heard good & terrible players on both. The last fretless bass I owned had lines, but ultimately I relied on my ears, same as I would on an unlined one.
-
It's certainly a looker. Is this one of the ones with the contouring on the bowl? I haven't played an Ovation for years but they look like they'd be more comfortable than the older round back versions.
Thanks for the recommends, I'll give him a listen tomorrow. As an aside, I wonder if he ever met my dad. He calls our cat the Gatox, a mix of gato (Spanish for cat) and gateaux.
It's from an old joke - a man in a restaurant asks if he can have Gattox for dessert. When the waiter tells him they don't have any the man says "Oh Bollo". I didn't say it was a GOOD old joke...
